DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Immortal Elephants

Marksdwarf sucks. If you want they to kill things, that is.

My stray war elephant was beaten up by a wereskink! All he could do was shaking like a little kitten.
Fortunately he was tough enough to stay alive so the wereskink changed back into a human and was killed by my military.

Oh how the mighty marksdwarf has fallen.

Well, since its a marksdwarf attacking, I don't think height is a problem (and I've seen kidney/ears/eye injuries).

I finally killed one, but it took a legendary woodcutter with a battle axe.  He chopped the elephant down while everyone else held it down.

Oh, and elephants have been unconcious for most of the battles, so I doubt height is the issue.

They have always been powerful. Remember Boatmurdered.

Powerful, yes, but never immortal.  After 800+ rounds, someone should have had a critical hit to the head somewhere.

So, my hunters are either really incompetent or elephants are way more powerful than they once were.

I've got a load of crossbow-wielding hunters, most of whom are Master marksdwarves by now, and after unloading hundreds of bolts into elephants, there have been no elephant kills.  The best I've seen is a red wound to a trunk, but that elephant fled the map very swiftly.  It seems that the yellow wounds the elephants had been getting heal in a few days, leading to no elephant deaths.

What am I doing wrong?

Lumber is now a plentiful resource, go wild!

Seriously, you'll be looking for applications for the huge piles of logs you end up with after clearing fortress space in a forest. starting with a proficient carpenter is a good idea. You might want to spare some favorite trees from cutting, though, since fruit are useful - some have different applications; you can make booze from most fruit like plums and apples but press jugs of oil from olives instead, in addition to cooking them or eating them raw.

how do you gather them?

Damn when did trees get so big.

Going to be slow posting as I'm working on final projects and have finals next week.

BTW, we ate one of the reindeer....there was an issue where we needed some leather and apparently falcons and stuff only give skulls.

stand on top of where he's trying to construct a wall...

AND THEN COMPLAIN THERE"S SOMEONE STANDING THERE

Would you want to touch material that has a reputation for unleashing clowns when mined?

Why did my hunter unload an entire stack of bolts into a boar, cripple each of its limbs, and then go to sleep, letting it slowly crawl away until I sent my hammer after it to put it out of its misery....and make bacon
?

I’ve decided that in order to secure the farming area we desperately need, I will need to do some terrain modification.  I might also be able to give a certain bookkeeper a place to work where I don’t have to listen to his complaints.  The project would take some labor, however, especially if it was not to compromise the security of the fortress itself.  It would take careful consideration of her options to get it to work properly.

Just as we got the last set of migrants settled in, a new wave has arrived.  I just started ordering the carving of our bedrooms, now I have to deal with more new dwarves.
A Female Fisherdwarf
A Male Engraver
A Male Fisherdwarf
A Female Animal Caretaker
A Female Potter

It isn’t as bad as I had thought, an additional five dwarves is not a horrible occurance.  It is a shame none of them brought useful equipment, like picks.
----
Screams of panic could be heard from the forest where The General was installing a cage trap to capture some of the local wildlife.  She grabbed the hammer from her belt and ran to the fortress.  Bursting through the main entryway, a bolt whizzed by her head, striking a massive bird in the side.  The migrant that shot the bolt, the potter, reloaded, but The General saw a more expedient way to deal with the situation.  Hefting her hammer, she smashed the bird in the head, sending it flying into the wall.  With the bird dead, the dozen dwarves who had fled in terror looked at her in awe.  She wiped the blood from her hammer, and went back to work on her cage traps.  The damned thing probably got in through the open roof of the special project.  That would be finished soon enough, though.

----
The project is finally finished.  Now Spirallances can shut up about his cabin in the woods.

The bedrooms were also completed, more than enough for their current needs.  Now to set up offices and other niceties for dwarves like herself who had a lot of paperwork that needed doing.

(So got us through to the end of Summer, and got a migrant wave so decided to stop to give people a chance to claim dorfs and see the story so far.  A lot of our migrants have military skills already (albeit not very good ones, but some)).

General Urist Babkadol looked over the fortress as it took shape under her tutelage.  They had dug out significantly, but hadn't found enough soil to do anything meaningful with yet.  She wanted a nice farm set up, something to ensure never needing to pick berries outside again, but without making some sort of flooding and draining systems, they were out of luck so far.  Digging down and under the soil where their wagon was would be an option, but that can wait for now.

She had had to give Spirallances an "office" to do his work in.  The office was a quickly carved chair at the end of an unfinished hallway, but he didn't seem to mind. He didn't have to pick berries, so it placated him.  Some of the other dwarves grumbled over special treatment, but the hammer on her belt loop quieted any muttering.    She had taken it on herself to set up the various workshops….all but the tanners and butchers inside for safety.  The drawbridge was also completely set up, and tested to ensure it was working.  The fort could be cut off from the outside world at the pull of a lever, and if they could get a source of water inside, and the farms set up, it might be best to do just that permanently, or at least as often as possible.  Something to consider.

--------
As the General looked over her plans, and surveyed the entrance to the fort, she noticed a group approaching from the west.  Five very lost looking dwarves were approaching with a plethora of animals.  They asked her for directions to the fort, and she pointed to the entrance.  They seemed almost shocked that they had dug into a natural divot into the surface, as if concealing the entrance was a new idea.  These dwarves were not the kind she was used to…although since history had been rewritten, she was unsure if any dwarves like the kind she was used to had ever existed.   She took careful notes of the new arrivals, and one in particular caught her eye.  He said his name was Splint…odd name for a dwarf, but his build was perfect for a swordsdwarf.

An excerpt from those notes:
A Male Craftsdwarf (clothied, leatherworker, stone crafter) who I think would be a good swordsdwarf.  His name is Splint.
A Female Wood Crafter.  Her talents mark her as a prime candidate for marksdwarf training.
A Male farmer, who should make a fine hammerdwarf one day (has 4 pages of family relations)
A female farmer who will make a fine swordsdwarf one day.
A female beekeeper, who will make a fine speardwarf one day.
A Female Brewer who will make a good markswarf.
(Note: if I say they will make a fine ___dwarf that means they already have skills in those areas.

Hyde you have your pick of the unnamed migrants).
We have also gained:
2 reindeer calves (both male)
A female goat kid
A male poult
A female poult
A peahen
In addition to our hunting dog, Yak Cow, and Female 2-hump camel, we have nine animals.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Goblin Killing Goblin?

This can sometimes happen if you reclaim a location.  I've had necromancers (but not their undead) kobolds and goblins appear as friendlies and attack enemies of the fort.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that floor, it is working as intended

The General looks up from her notebook sketches of the new fortress layout, trying to figure out where to set up the temporary stockpiles, and where they could set up farms.  One of the dwarves with her babbled on about setting up a cabin….as if they were humans.  She saw the usefulness of fortifications and towers on the surface….anything to get word of warning or to rain down bolts on an incoming siege or monster, but to live on the surface?  Lunacy.
Of course, Spirallances was looking at her again, expectantly.  She knew he was good with books and managing stuff, so with a sigh, she gave him what he wanted.  “Fine, you’re the Expedition Leader…and bookkeeper.  Now go pick some berries.”
He looked happy for a moment until the last part of what she had said hit home.  He started to protest, but the General cut him off.
”Go pick berries.  Once I get the rest of this lot organized I will help, as will one of the others….you” she pointed at random among the dwarves.  ”You two, grab a pick, and come with me.  You two, start cutting down every tree within twenty lengths of here.  If you get bored of that, unload the wagon.”  They grabbed their equipment out of the wagon, and set to work.

She looked at the gently sloping surface of the exposed hillside, and felt along it.  It was living stone, the perfect foundation for a Mountain Home or Fortress.  She touched one particular spot, motioning to the miners.  ”Start here.  Make the slope clear-cut around the entrance, that will make it harder for enemies to approach the entrance unseen.  Dig straight back away, three lengths wide by one high, and dig out a central staircase that looks like this.”  She showed them a sketch from her notebook.  ”Branch off each direction, and carve out some stockpile areas.  Let me know if you need any guidance.”

The two took off like a shot, tunneling in.  They hit a coal seam almost immediately, which boded well for the production of arms and armor at this fortress.  Certainly they would need to dig down to a magma seam to begin production in earnest, but the first few years they could rely on coal and charcoal smithed weapons.  The snow was already melting as she searched for hidden berries on the ground.  This was a good site.  Armok would be pleased.

(been literally like 4 in-game days and the snow all disappeared.  The ice is still around, though.  Going to have to figure out a well/water situation sooner rather than later simply because whenever I don’t, some dwarf dies of thirst from injuries in the winter months).

Dear Urist McGhost:

I fully understand that nobody wants to be forgotten. I also fully understand the anger you feel, what with no memorials to you being made and your body being left to rot in the sun and your death being caused by a bone carver punching your face into hamburger patty.

What I don't understand is why you murdered the dwarf in charge of engraving memorial slabs.

Regards,
Armok

Dear Armok,

I didn't like what he was planning on saying about me.  I want to be remembered for something good.

Sincerely,
Urist McGhost
