Explaining DF to my friends is totally pointless. The only games they like are linear roller coaster types. They need the game to tell them which direction to go, which enemies to shoot, what weapon to use, when to use said weapon. I have dumb friends.... It sucks, because many games are more fun with a human opponent, like Civilization, Europa Universalis, Endless Space, and others like Minecraft and Terraria are more fun with friends that play like you do. Alas, I'm stuck playing solo until my friends evolve brains.

I always design forts in a manner I think the dwarves would "like." I'll sacrifice efficiency and ease for aesthetic reasons. I build passages that twist and curve. I design apartments and multi level houses. I just like my forts to be both visually appealing for me, and to make sense as if I was walking through them.

I never thought I'd win an argument about language with people that think "moar" is an acceptable word. That doesn't make me wrong. If you tell a drug addict that drugs are bad, and he goes on to argue that they're a part of his culture, does that mean heroin is good for him? A correct example of a portmanteau is "ginormous." In American English it is considered slang, it has no accepted definition or use. In British English, however, it is perfectly acceptable. And no, the things I said were not ad hominems. They were simply insults. There are, actually, a number of English language councils that work to update our language with words that fill a role that was either empty or was previously filled by a less suitable word. None of those respected groups recognize the internet as a region. And actually they agree with me. Many of the people on the language councils are also teachers and professors and they've reported an increase in students failing English courses due to the use of internet slang.

And I do like how I was accused of being a troll just because my name has a "big word" in it. It illustrates my argument beautifully that the use of internet slang has denegrated the English language. To attempt to discredit my argument simply because I used Execrated instead of MOARhated is exactly what I'm talking about.

Racial slurs have always been considered unacceptable. They were used primarily by the uneducated lower classes. The educated avoided their use because even when they first evolved through misspellings and mispronunciations they were considered slang. And a portmanteau is only such if it's recognized as an acceptable part of a region's language. Moar is not an accepted part of any language. And also, an ad hominem is what's called a logical fallacy. If I was to say that you, reelya, don't even know what an ad hominem is, so how can you possibly be good at DF? Then that would be an ad hominem. It's an attempt to persuade people that someone is incapable of this because they're incapable at that. Even if this and that are completely unrelated.

Honestly? The fact so many people defend the use of meaningless gibberish is worse than using it. Should I post endless amounts of racial slurs just because other people do it? Will you attack anyone that dares to say it's wrong of me to use such words? Of course not, because you've been told it's uncool to use those words. But I see no distinction. They're perversions of the English language, and as such there is no reason to use them. And I'll continue to think poorly of anyone who thinks any slang is an acceptable form of communication.

I'm not angry, just disappointed by the increase in the use of slang. I don't understand the obsession with it. I prefer complete, well thought out sentences. I know I'm in the minority, I accept that people learn to write and spell from Twitter instead of school. But that doesn't mean I have to like it, or that I can't speak out about. Just as you can continue to butcher the English language I can continue to say you shouldn't.

Well you just refuted the theory that Dwarf Fortress attracts a more educated crowd. That guy who posted the theory on the Lamb-Chapyblin dipole is going to be disappointed.

I doubt there are very many deliberate attempts at being moronic. I'm pretty sure it just comes naturally. I just don't understand the obsession with misspelling any word. Maybe it's me. I cringe every time someone uses a pointless misspelling. Maybe I need to get out less. I could spend more time alone. See my family and friends less. Move into a basement. Only use the internet to find places I can misspell more. Man, that'd be l33t.

I'm using a cellphone, which doesn't differentiate between the two. A grammar error attributed to quick typing or a touch screen phone is fine. Though my first sentence wasn't a question, it was contemplative which doesn't require a question mark. The intentional misspelling of a word is just idiotic. If you like it that's... No I don't care what you think. Just stop posting links to cartoon network gone wild please.

Is it really so hard to spell "more" correctly. Every time I read a post by someone who thinks its cool to have misspelled a word I get the image of a 13 year old that probably likes anime porn.  Do they market special keyboards that include a "moar" button on cartoon porn websites?

I have played DF on a 7 year old computer with 1 gb of RAM and I was able to get to year 4 or 5 before I started seeing any real issues. Now I play on a 5 year old computer with 3gb of RAM and I've never had issues. I haven't played a fort for more than 10 years though, so I'm not sure if it becomes an issue after that amount of time.

As a programmer you should also understand why he doesn't want other people poking around in his work. It's nearly impossible to set limits on what a person can and can't change when they have access to everything. If you work for a company that creates immense games then you know they only give access to specific parts of the game to the people working on that specific part. The team that's working on combat doesn't have the ability to change the terrain and vice versa. If you work for a company making small games you are either going to do everything on your own or with a small group. But then you're limited to that one project. Toady has a vision for DF. If he was to open source the code and let you take a crack at the pathfinding, that part of the game would be dictated by your vision.  Let the man follow his vision. He's never misled anyone about what this game is. So what, exactly, is the problem with him doing exactly as he says he's gonna do?

I am subscribed to only 2 forums, this one and another indie game forum. Both of them have recently had someone post a topic about how they don't like "x" and therefore the programmer needs to listen to them. Seriously? Have you seen the code for this game? Can you handle that kind of programming? I'm gonna assume no, because you're on here saying that Toady is dumber than you. Which means you're not on here telling everybody you have created Slaves to Armnotok: God of Hemoglobin Chapter II, Dwarf Castle which allows you to build a fortress from the ground up in a 3D, open world. It also sports Newtonian physics, the ability to have a population of over 1000, a full technology tree and AI so smart that if left to their own devices they'll become self-aware and rise up against you! Oh, and it will run at 10,000 FPS on a Commodore 64. I don't understand people like you. You created a bunch of worlds, ran them for 5 minutes, and then said they weren't playable. And then you came on here to insult someone for letting you do that for FREE. If you are as smart as you seem to believe you are, I cannot wait to play the game you create. When are you releasing it? How much is it gonna cost? I'm gonna pirate it, put it through a decompiler and then give the code away for free, but I'd still like to know what you think it's gonna be worth. How often will you update? Daily I assume since you're such an amazing programmer. And finally, how soon after you release it will it be ok for me to go on your forum and tell you how it's total crap, and that DF is a million times better?
