DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Chickens for their.... loyalty?
« on: November 28, 2013, 05:51:22 am »
I've noticed this with a few of my war dire wolves. Left to their own devices, they will always choose to stay by the spot where their owner died, even if it means going around a horde of zombies. It's especially sad to see when there's ghosts about and the wolves seem to be keeping them company on their haunt.

As said above, unless you plan to kill her or use her to make your entire fort into vampires you might as well just lock her away somewhere and forget about her.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Will wild birds lay eggs...

Yeah, wild animals definately breed. I accidentally trapped three wild giant dingos in my fortress, so I walled them up and forgot about them. Every now and again I'd get messages telling me the dingos had babies. I didn't have any tame ones and I think there was like 15 of them before I decided to break down the wall, trap and tame them.

Wild birds (and snakes, and lizards) won't breed  though because they can't assign themselves to nestboxes unless tame.

Thralled giant sponge. There is no need for another creature to combine it with.

What caste is the child? If he's an armor savant he'll automatically have armorsmithing skill and I think he'll come with it pre-enabled.

Castes are awesome.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Engravings worthy of your Fortress
« on: October 22, 2012, 12:20:20 pm »
The entrance to my current fort is plastered with images of this one white tigerwoman who apparently killed a dragon in legends. There's like three different masterful engravings of her having her left 4th toe bitten off and two others depicting her beheading the dragon with a mithril scythe. Which is pretty badass. Interestingly, she's still alive, so if she ever sieges my fort I'm locking her in a cage in the dining room or throwing her in my gladiator arena.

Then there's the results of the latest siege engraved all over my new dining hall.... Much was recorded of my boozebelly goat that accidentally got a title by killing two goblins when I forgot to bring my animals into the bunker. Generally my engravings aren't interesting, though one of my engravers loves to carve images of the four forgotten beasts I've had this fort.
(I play with masterwork mod)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Most annoying dwarf death
« on: October 19, 2012, 12:21:11 pm »
Playing masterwork dwarf fortress, I accidentally sacrificed my chief medical dwarf (who was AWESOME and legendary in all medical skills plus my favorite dwarf) on the altar of armok. I thought they just grabbed a random dude, not killed the guy tasked...

Non-modded: I finally figured out how to make squads patrol. So I set up a perimeter guard, selecting my four best dwarves and some meat shields with crossbows to patrol the "green zone" and keep the hundreds of zombies away from my fort.

"Urist McGodly has been struck down"
"Urist McSwordmaster has been stuck down"
"Goden McUrist'sWarGoat has been found dead"

For some reason they took off their equipment and were running around in civilian clothing, where a zombie titan's mutilated corpse met them. I DID assign them their specific uniforms when I added them to the new squad as well...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your quickest game ever?
« on: October 19, 2012, 08:21:24 am »
Embarked on a site with a forest titan. Didn't even have time to get my dwarves underground.
Joint quickest would have to be that one time when I was a newbie and thought "terrifying" was just a scenic tag. Embarked in a terrifying desert and almost immediately lost my dogs to evil mist.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Best ways to troll somebody's raw files?
« on: October 14, 2012, 05:52:06 am »
Put [CRAZED] in the raw file for cats and give them the giant desert scorpion's venom injection on every attack.

The [crazed] tag should make even the pet ones go mental and murder everything.

Alternatively, yeah making dwarves miniscule (like, within the double digits of size) would be funny because nothing would appear to be wrong but crundles etc would be biting his militia in half right left and centre.

I'm not an experienced enough modder to tell you how to do the latter, but I think you can pretty much just copy paste the dragonfire code from dragons into dwarves' attacks and end up with his wrestlers incinerating everything.

Chain captured invaders on squares surrounded by spike traps to set an example of them.

And everyone loves kobald petting zoos!

Alternatively, waterfall art is both useful and really cool, though I've heard it can hurt your fps. Cleans muck off your dwarves (awesome in a terrifying biome), gives happy thoughts and looks cool. I like to embark near rivers because I'm too lazy to figure out pump stacking.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I Found A Kitten
« on: October 11, 2012, 10:53:37 pm »
Psh! Catsplosions can be a good thing! Jam them all in a cage as they're born, and then link it to a pressure plate so if anything gets past your defences a swarm of kittens slows down the invaders and gives you precious time to get all your dwarves into an emergency bunker.

One kitten is pretty harmless though, a small number is a good thing, especially if they're of one gender. If they start to breed out of control just cage females and kittens as they're born.
Personally I modded my cats to be war trainable and have a bite that causes necrosis. Because why not. My favorite speardwarf at the moment has like 20.
