DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How / where to get narwhals to spawn
« on: July 05, 2020, 06:04:41 pm »
Maybe some spirits of fire/etc. fire creature bodyparts could be hot enough to not vaporize water while keeping it from freezing, but I've failed to see it work out in practice so far.

Caged fire imps? They're [HOMEOTHERM:10095], which is hotter than warm stone but lower than water's boiling point. Look's like that's safe for wooden cages, too.

Caged fire imps don't seem to melt ice around them.  Even after letting them out of the cage surrounded by ice walls, there is no change to the ice. (Probing the area is a stable 9991U).

Melting the ice with magma under it is easy enough, but the ice along the edge of the map will not melt unless you melt it from the top, and this seems very problematic and temperamental.  I think the only way I can probably solve this is to write a dfhack script to convert arctic ocean into a real arctic ocean with a solid 2 layers of ice before getting liquid water, but I'm not sure how possible that is.

DF Gameplay Questions / How / where to get narwhals to spawn
« on: July 05, 2020, 02:52:26 pm »
I'd like to create a fort that specializes in the processing / slaughter of narwhals but I'm not entirely sure it's possible to get them to show up.  The main issue being that in all arctic zones, it's always below freezing, so there is never liquid water for narwhals to swim in.  I've even started a fort on the borders between an arctic ocean and a non-freezing ocean biome and haven't had any luck there either.  Do I really have to bring magma up from the magma pool, because I simply can't imagine them showing up naturally. What am I doing wrong, and have you ever seen a narwhal in any of your games?

You don't have isometrics or depth when you're viewing everything from directly above.
A wall below a wall will not appear, because you can only see the tops.
DF is top-down.  Many of the tilesets don't reproduce it correctly, but yes.  It's a 90 degree angle to the ground.

DF is 2d (well in display anyways), how you display that is totally up to the designer.  You rarely ever see a total top down view as you describe, and usually only older games take that perspective (the original Sim City for example).  Isometric is still used in a 2d world, but it gives it more of a 3d look.  Displaying it as such isn't wrong as you seem to assume, because top down games these days are almost always done from a isometric viewpoint.

I'd love to see wars after particular artifacts of old.  Would add new history to what is now just standard artifact creation.

Madness?!?  No... this is OLDHALL!!!!  Love that battle, I'm sure great bards sing about the glory of the Dwarves during that great seige for many generations to come.

Besmar is an interesting character, and I could easily imagine a series of novels about her exploits.  Distraught with her own blood linage becoming allies with the hated goblins, she swore an oath to destroy any of her blood who would choose such a path.

I bet after about the 4th Great grandchild she killed, she was thinking... man, I really shouldn't have had so many children.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Need help finding water
« on: July 18, 2008, 11:36:02 am »
Thanks for your help on this guys.

If an aquifer is less then the whole Z level, what's the minimum size it will be?  I've been digging around in the only soil level I've got, so before I start in on the rock, I'd just like to get a general idea.

And to answer the question, I'd like the water for injured dwarves.  I've already lost 2 legendary miners to lack of water after getting injured and would like to prevent my army from suffering a similar fate.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Need help finding water
« on: July 18, 2008, 11:08:17 am »
So my fortress is at a location where there is no water, or at least standing water or streams.  When I embarked it warned me about an aquifer and that I may have trouble finding stone, but so far I have not located it.  The ground level is almost all red sand, and I've been digging out extensive mines underneath in search of water (mostly for injured dwarves).  Is there any suggestions that you all have in finding this aquifer?  What Z levels are aquifer's usually found on?

DF Bug Reports / Re: [39c] Merchant Caged Animals are all dead

Yup, that seems to be the case.  Kinda odd though that the caged animals die, but the animals in my fort are fine.

DF Bug Reports / [39c] Merchant Caged Animals are all dead
« on: July 18, 2008, 10:24:50 am »
The merchants from my Dwarven civilizations were nice enough to bring the animals I had requested, sadly however, they were all corpses in cages by the time they had arrived.  Not sure if this is intentional or not, but it's sorta gruesome getting cages with corpses of various animals inside in by trading.

DF Bug Reports / [39a] Was a child of an unknown creature
« on: July 14, 2008, 11:05:47 am »
I've noticed that many of the creatures in my large world with a defined seed number are born from unknown creatures, some with only the father or mother unknown, and some, like in this screenshot, from both parents.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: He... died...
« on: March 25, 2008, 02:50:00 pm »
One time it took me forever to get revenge on the Elite Bowmaster, and I couldn't even get that.

Apparently one of the times I went into the Goblin area, it spawned a large pack of wolves which mortally wounded the Elite Goblin Bowmaster, and he died before I could get to him.

Once I found him and was headed out however, is when the Demon Leader of the camp decided he'd make his entrance.  It was a short life.

How about instead of posting threads like this asking why toady is ruining you DF experience, you thank toady for giving you the honor of playing his game in such an unfinished state and for free at that. There's a reason the game warns you that it's in alpha when you open it.

Thanks for putting words into my mouth.  I respect Toady and really appreciate everything that he has produced so far. I also really enjoy DF, and because I enjoy it I want to see it become even better, and that is why I gave the suggestions above. Does complaining to people who make thoughtful suggestions in a clear and concise manner help the game become better, or does it make people bitter and drive away intelligent discussion?

srsly, what do you think you accomplish by whining at these things which probably has been in the bug report board like a million times?

That's all I am getting at, just hoping that bugs that we see on a normal basis are given higher priority then others that may happen once every 10 games, or are very corner case.

All we are looking for is that highly visible bugs be given greater priority in fixing, if at all possible.

And yes, I agree that this should probably be in the suggestion section, I just replied to an existing thread to state my support for this notion.

Did you even read the previous two posts? The game is alpha... Major bugs will not be fixed until the core gameplay elements are finalized. if you are overly frustrated with bugs don't play, come back when the games in beta and the focus has shifted from implementing content to squashing major bugs.

Did you even read mine, there is no reason to have such a tone with me, I've been playing DF quite happily for a long time, and lurk this forum regularly, and I expect bugs in an unfinished product... hell even in a finished one. However, your statement about "major bugs not being fixed" is a total mistruth, as game crashing bugs, which are Major bugs, are fixed, and reasonably so.  This doesn't even get into the non-major bugs which also has been fixed recently.

This post isn't a blast against bugs as you seem to think it is, but is instead a plee to fix certain bugs over others, if he fixing bugs anyways. There may be complications that prevent him from fixing them, which is totally fine, or he may be overhauling that particular area soon.  However, other bugs which may not be touched on for 6 months+ should be considered for fixing, especially if they are game-breaking or crashing issues.  That's all I am getting at, just hoping that bugs that we see on a normal basis are given higher priority then others that may happen once every 10 games, or are very corner case.
