Masterwork DF / Re: [DWARF] - Gameplay Questions
« on: December 17, 2013, 08:48:23 pm »
I rebuilt the guildhall close to the mint and it started allowing Dwarves to join up.

However I have a new problem. I disallowed all of my dwarves save my 4 metalworking dwarves, and set up a "Join Smith's Guild" action.

The dwarves will go, pick up the coins, and go do the action.  It will display the message "A dwarf has joined a guild".  But they don't actually join.

After my 5th try, a dwarf turned into an apprentice dwarf and joined for real.  Nobody else has since.

None of the 4 were part of a guild to begin with.

Is there a chance, based on some stat, that the "join guild" action won't work?

I have the Guildhall built directly under my dining room.  Is it possible that too many idle dwarves one Z level above is confusing it?

I will go test that.

They're actually still in the mint.  I just put them all in a stockpile with no bins.  No luck.

Yes, sovereigns.

Can the coins be stockpiled?  They are about 40 squares apart, I can move the guildhall to within 6 squares of the mint if that will help.

I was able to process one "join guild" action, making a farmer a member of the mining guild by accident, and since then nothing.

Hello!  I'm newly back to DF and decided to try out Masterwork.

I've been playing with it for about 2 weeks, and I have most of it kinda figured out.

I have 2 questions.

When I started this fortress, I toggled every invader switch off so I could learn in peace.  Even if I turn them back on, they won't start invading due to their absence during world-gen, right?

Secondly, I can't seem to figure out the guildhall.  I have plenty of coins from the mint, but all the options at the guildhall are redded out.

Can one of you walk me through how you use the guildhall to put specific dwarves into specific guilds?

I love this mod, thanks for all the great work!

DF Gameplay Questions / I need help with my new netbook
« on: March 27, 2010, 06:07:21 pm »
I've been playing DF for years now on my desktop, but since it died, I can't really justify buying a new one.  I have a netbook, but it has no numberpad, just the keyboard.

Is there any way to re-map the keys or something?  I get as far as outfitting the first 7 dwarves, but can't find a way to enter anything.  The plus key it's looking for doesn't exist on this device.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The TRUE Destiny of Peasants

The final solution to the peasant problem is the workout room.

Just a room full of screwpumps.  Set the peasants to do nothing but pump, and in a year or so they'll be legendary.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The best squad name I've ever seen

My current fortress's military is lead by a pair of artifact-wielding champions who operate as "The Rough Drinkers".

The next most senior squad is less impressive.  "The Tin Posts"

DF Gameplay Questions / Constructions on the Edge, and Waterslides
« on: August 28, 2008, 08:15:01 pm »
Could you build an elevated causeway to the edge of the map, and otherwise seal off your fortress so your traders will always leave and enter the same way, and invading gobs will enter and leave in the same area?  I know you can't dig or channel at the edge, or build walls, but can you build a floor to the edge?

Also.

I'm building a large tower with a sealed chamber at the top, and using a series of pumps to lift water into it.  The inside of the tower is a spiral of ramps.  If I empty the water into the top of the tower, will a dwarf be pushed down the ramps safely?  I'm hoping that the huge number of mists will result in happy dwarves.

I managed to clear out the pits at my current fortress for the first time ever.

It was a pit of tentacle demons, and I knew I was getting close as the adamantine veins were getting closer and thicker.  So I built an "encounter room" with fortifications and got 5 of my champion legendary hammer/marksdwarves ready to accept the demonic charge.

On a related note, I had dug a zig-zag channel in front of the fortifications so the demons would take longer to get to the wardwarves.

When I breached the pit, imagine my surprise when a blood tide of crazy peasants came flying out!  However, my zig-zag channel served as a pit-trap for all those crazy people, and so they all ended up in a tiny little area.  The tentacle demons though were invisible until they reached my first Dwarf, where a wall of steel arrows began an epic and terrible slaughter among the tentacle demons.

Final score?  35 dead tentacle demons, not a single injury among the wardwarves.  And fun extra names for the dwarves.

After a while, the crazy people died, and I had a vast and epic number of bones to train more marksdwarves.  And demon skulls make valuable totems to trade.

When it was all said and done, the pits were clear, I was able to mine every last bit of adamantine, and my FPS went back up to almost normal!

A note, how do I get rid of all that (filth) and (unknown substance).  It appears to be a liquid, but nobody will dump it.  I have buckets, but no go.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The Exercise Room
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:01:18 am »
Am I the only one who uses an exercise room?

I have a room full of pumps, and set all my unneeded immigrants to work out in addition to hauling.  Next to that room I have a series of catapults shooting into a wall.

Before a few seasons go by, my new guys are legendary, which solves the problem with the economy, and when they're legendary pumpers and siegers, they've got the stats to start training as wrestlers.

In my current fortress, I have 68 champions all of which have maxed out pump, siege, and engraving, in addition to all the basic combat skills.

I really, really hope that somehow it will be compatible with the version that allows you to send out armies.

Does this work?

My current fort isn't getting any immigrants, after one glassmaker and his two kids, which has made for a very fast moving fun game so far, but now I'm bored of my 10 Dwarves.

I've already got a pair of lovers, and at least 2 more potential couples, but after I lock them in together, nothing happens.  How many parties should it take for the lovers to get married?  Do I need nobility or something?

If my fort never gets any immigrants, this is my only hope for new dwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dam the river
« on: November 25, 2007, 06:06:00 pm »
I'm wanting to dam the river.  For various purposes.

So far I've planned to dig an underground channel leading to the chasm, and putting some floodgates into that channel, and diverting the river into that by digging underneath it.  From there I could do whatever I wanted with the dry riverbed, then put the floodgates back up and the river would go back to it's original path.

Is there a safer/less insane way to do this?
