DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

I finally figured out quantum stockpiles!  This is my temporary setup before I descend into the madness...ermmmm...the hills.

I do have a slight question with something that annoys me, since I just set these up for the first time last night.  If the minecart is receiving something smaller than 100%, such as bolts, or furniture...it does not dump automatically.  Last night I set a command for it to dump 1x per day automatically, but I didn't see that happening.  Can anyone expound?  Would the dwarves still be able to get the goods out of the minecart even if it has not yet dumped?

Just survived my first ever goblin siege!  Only 10 goblins, but I suckered them into my main hallway, where they fell prey to the cage and weapon traps.  8 dead, and 4 caged.  Now I just have to figure out what to do with the caged ones.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Gremlin Tears - Where do you stock these?

Somehow, a huge batch of materials was left on the map.  I went to reclaim everything, and there was a barrel of gremlin frozen tears.  Where do you stock these?

Got my very first forgotten beast today, a werepanda.  He was super fast, but immediately my dwarves went after him and unloaded iron bolts into him.  He lasted just a few seconds.  I haven't even had time to train anyone yet!

Food feels cheaty to me. Dwarves haven't invented the microwave and freezer wagon yet have they? :P
I just imagine they get back to the mountain home, unload, and everybody is bowled over by the mass miasma of rotten food.

I like trading obsidian mechanisms when I've got access to lava.

They didn't have those things back in the day either, I imagine due to dwarven engineering they are able to quickly preserve the products.  Imagine it all pickled in booze :P

Well, I do want to get rid of the stone, yes.  However, it is nice to be able to acquire an entire caravan with food early on.

So...I was taught a while back to trade rock crafts.  Fine, fine, I understand...rock is everywhere.  BUT I decided to trade food with this fort, and VOILA my trades are now going from the 6-10K range to the 60-70K range, in the same amount of game time!  Why in the heck would anyone focus on trading bins of crafts worth 2K when they can trade a barrel of food worth 10K?

So I was doing fine, had begun to set up my main workshops, and created a bridge access to my fort so that I could prevent sieges (got burned by a siege on the last fort really quickly, since I had not yet focused on a military).  Well, I was getting continual commands that my expedition leader was cancelling orders, so finally I take a look.  I realize that I have created his room's access on the other side of the bridge.  So...I dig out a part of the wall so I can get him access...but yeah, the goblins figure that out really fast.  Bye bye fort.

Another thing I am doing (remember, I am still a noob, still learning things) is placing 1 wheelbarrow in a small wood and small stone stockpile that I have by the wood and stone shops.  This way, I can get 1 dwarf to boot scoot with fresh logs while my workers work.  Seems to be doing fine so far.

Yes, I can set up feeder stockpiles.  Each shop has a 5x5 area so I can designate specific items to feed into each shop if desired.

Here is the layout I am going to test for my workshops -

This will provide plenty of centralized stockpile area so I can designate certain stockpiles to be in certain locations (food, stone, clothes, etc).  What do you guys think?

Since I am still getting the swing of things...

I finally set up a decent initial fort.  My "small" thing I would like to post here is that I finally was able to trade for everything from an elven caravan.  Granted, that may not be much for the regular player, but for me, that is a good stepping stone.  Learned how to do plenty of other basic stuff as well, so pretty cool.  One mistake I did was make all of my animals available, so now every dwarf pretty much has a pet lol.  However, all part of the learning I suppose.

Yeah, the terminology can be pretty squishy. I understood what you meant because your pictures are very clear. It's a good, easy to understand write-up. Easier to understand than the description of the two-clit method.

I think you mean two-slit method :D

So the consensus seems to be quantum AND feeder stockpiles?

Also, got my book, "Getting Started With Dwarf Fortress".  I am still a noob, so please don't laugh...but I just learned about nest boxes, and I just dug out a big room for all my turkeys/chickens/etc etc etc. Also, I dug out a huge room for my dining room and put 4 statues in there, and made one of them the statue garden (this was not part of his tutorial, but I just learned about them and used them to make my dining room legendary - boo yeah!)  Next step is to set up my first squad.

About to get started on the industry section, so far everything is VERY good, definitely would recommend to any noobs who want a good read AND the basics.

Okay, I do think it is important for me to learn how to do quantum stockpiles, EVEN if it is a cheat, so I can learn some of the ins and outs of that approach.  It might be a "cheat", but it is also an alternate way to play the game, and I think it is therefore important to at least learn how to do it.

As far as stone, I have for now created one garbage pile and D-B-D all the stone, and since I have about 50 dwarves, this gets done very fast.  I can then D-B-C and stone is reclaimed.  I could potentially design a stone stockpile in the vicinity of the shops that use lots of stone, but I simply use that garbage pile for the moment.  Always open to suggestions, of course.

The wheelbarrow points are interesting.  I guess I need to see the idea of hauling items individually, versus in a container, versus in a wheelbarrow (unless you can haul multiple items/containers in one wheelbarrow).  Then I can easily see what may be the best approach for each stockpile).

Do we have a link for feeder stockpiles?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Quick way to remember containers
« on: September 22, 2014, 08:03:16 am »
Okay, finally getting back into learning this game (and I just bought the book on Dwarf Fortress, should be in in a few days) - dealing with containers.  A couple of quick questions:

#1 - Is there a quick way to remember which container is for what?  I have a fort started and was cutting gems, but I couldn't remember which container to make for gems (just found out this morning via Wiki that it is bins).  Is that the only one for gems (side question)?  Also, stuff like charcoal - going to try to figure out what those store in.

#2 - So I make stockpiles (and I will edit this if I find the info in the meantime) and it says that Bins and Barrels are preset to 0 per stockpile.  Is "0" a designation for no definite #, and it will fill as needed?

I am guessing that if I want to be serious about hauling, it would be good to add up to 3 wheelbarrows to rooms?
