Yes underground layer 0 refer to aboveground, and yes they will only spawn aboveground if they can spawn in the surface biome, however I don't think they will spawn in volcanoes if you use the magma sea biome due to creature coming from the borders of the map.
However, creatures from the magma sea will sometime swim up to the crater of a volcano and try to leave the map aboveground

Do we have any Malagasy* here, or other lemur-knowers? I'm planning to add some lemurs and need to know which ones are the most important. As of yet, the ring-tailed lemur is a given.

*sorry for the stereotype, I imagine one should know relatively more about the endemic fauna, regardless of location

Soooo, I may have awakened from a long slumber and have in the meantime worked in nature management for a reserve in Madagascar last year, so here's some lemurs :
      The indri, they are tailless and the biggest lemur, they tend to dwell high in the canopy to form chorus and howl together, I learned they were socializing but their screams still scares me
      The sifaka, one of my favourite, I love how they hop around and their long tails, they spend most of their times climbing trees
      The mouse lemur, or microcebe, they are nocturnal and the smallest are thumb-sized

You can choose were your item will be stockpiled using Material Usage Tokens, you can check on the wiki for the full list, for plant milk you will want your material to have "LIQUID_MISC_PLANT" to store it in "Extract (Plant)" and CHEESE_PLANT for your tofu.

You might hit a wall if you want to make vegetal shellls, bones or ivory (tried to make coconut shells long ago, but the shell item is a bodypart and can't be produced by plants for now

[LOCAL_POPS_CONTROLLABLE] Let you play as the creature if it joins a civilization, what you want is [OUTSIDER_CONTROLLABLE] which will let you play as the creature even if there is none of your creature in the game. If I remember right, long time since I didn't player nor modded

Well, the problem with bloodstone is [ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER:100] who make it appears everywhere in enormous cluster, while [IS_GEM:...] just says it should spawn gem item instead of boulder item. The [IS_STONE] is also defined twice, since it have [USE_MATERIAL_TEMPLATE:STONE_TEMPLATE], and [IS_STONE] is already defined in this template.

All the gems uses [ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER_SMALL:X] to appear in small clusters, so if you want to go back to the same amount of bloodstone as vanilla you should replace [ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER:100] with [ENVIRONMENT:ALL_STONE:CLUSTER_SMALL:100], but if you want it to be a stone you need to replace the [IS_GEM:...] with [STATE_NAME_ADJ:ALL_SOLID:bloodstone]

You know, I was going to say that this must all look insane to the mortals, but then I remembered that the mortals don't actually see much outside of the mortal realm. Probably a good thing to be honest, since the majority of the gods are evil, chaotic, dedicated to fighting or neutral.

Well, the only contact gods had with mortals implied the genocide of two entire species

That's true, and allosaur men are pretty powerful, played one in adventure mode once.
