I tried a felid berserker for a change of pace. No weapons, armor or wands! That actually means you have enough identify scrolls for jewel[le]ry, potions and scrolls. Also, I found that cat claws count for Stabbing, and don't slash -- hydras were no problem. I died in Lair:7, for my second-best game ever (24000+ -- I'm still new at this.)

Every time I change species/backgrounds, I learn something about the game. A Brother in Arms cleared out a roomful of jellies for me. And at the end, I should have been even more careful to haul a death yak upstairs, and pause after every round to see how I was doing. Overconfidence in melee is my number one death-trap.

Thanks, everybody. I think I had scrolls of fog, so I'll remember that next time. Still, I'm happy that this game lasted as long as it did.

Aaaaand, 30 seconds after I posted that, Nessos showed up in the middle of a long corridor, and took me out. But my score is 17007, almost three times my previous best.

With a couple of scrolls, I got +1 pearl dragon armor. A team of skeletal warriors took about 80% of my HP, so it's already saved my life. And I'm on DL 12 (!), _much_ deeper than I've ever been.

Hmm. My level 9 Troll Berserker just found a pearl dragon hide. Is this wasted on him? I'm wearing it, because it's slightly better than animal skin, but is there more to it?

My latest SpEn fell to my stupid tendency to play attrition roulette. I'm fighting an orc, and our health is going down together. I tend to outfight him by hitting the attack key hard and fast, hoping to get in extra hits by sheer speed. Rather than use my Spriggan speed to kite him (I had plenty of darts). Sheesh! I've lost countless games of Nethack that way. But I do feel manly doing it.

Thank you all so much. I realize I need to pay more attention to the escape route. I notice that the monsters don't wander around as much as in Nethack, either. Could noise be a good thing? I hadn't considered that I could back around a corner and shout.

And I didn't realize that troll claws were one-handed. My TrBe's have been barehanded pretty much always.

Thanks again. This is more fun than I would have thought.

I just discovered Dungeon Crawl a couple of weeks ago. I was looking for another roguelike after I ascended most of the roles in Slash'em (the overgrown son of Nethack). So far, this is delightfully different.

After about 50 games total, with half a dozen different species/background combos, I can often see DLev 5 before getting overwhelmed. In Nethack, the advice is to descend slowly, relying on spawns for experience before you go down another level. The Crawl documentation warns that there aren't many spawns here, so you have to keep descending to keep eating. So maybe I'm doing something else wrong.

My favorite combo so far is Deep Dwarf/Necromancer -- I guess I just like necro's. But since they're spellcasters, I tend to ignore the armor lying around the dungeion -- I assume it interferes with spellcasting. Am I mistaken?

I know 50 games isn't a lot, but it feels like I'm plateauing. I always get, not just killed, but overwhelmed. If I went to wizard mode I'd be killed again a couple of times.

I know there's a way past this: I did it in Slash'em, and you've all done it here. So: any advice for a Crawl newbie?
