Curses / Re: LCS 4.03.1 Download
« on: April 10, 2011, 09:40:22 am »
I apologize if this has been reported before. I discovered I was able to get free rent on my apartment by going to the site while already renting, talking to the landlord, asking to rent an apartment again (seems silly this would be an option) and choosing "Decline". After doing this, I still own the apartment, but I stop paying all rent on it.

DF General Discussion / Re: Are the boards broken for everyone else???

I don't think it's a local problem for the OP. I'm having the same issue myself on networks that go through a proxy. At home I can connect fine.

Before DF21010 the forums worked perfectly in all places for me.

I agree, however since sites generally* have these features, you don't need to search for them. So, restrict your site finder to biome, temperature and other sites you want to find, rather than resources which every site will likely* have.

(*always? we'll have to play to find out the probabilities here)

While you are guaranteed to have magma, you still might want look for magma pipe embark.

Magma is supposed to be nearly bottom-most layer, so in order to make use of magma features on typical embark, you will have to pierce potential aquifier and dig all the way down throught caverns. That pretty much requires you to have competent military to deal with new undergound critters, forgotten beasts and possibly clowns. Then, build pump stack if you want magma moat or have magma-powered workshops near surface or maintain metalworking outpost near bottom.

It is going to be worth it to have embark with surface accessible magma if you actually want use magma.

So, in other words, getting to magma will be a lot more fun.

DF Modding / Re: Antialiased 24x24 tileset for 40d16 (now also 16x16)

This is very nice work. In the ASCII vs graphics debates I've tended to fall on the ASCII side, but this convinced me to make a change.

I guess my problems with most graphics is they always try to look too "busy". I prefer a the simple color+symbol representation of ASCII, and your tileset maintains that feel while also looking nicer.

My only criticism is the skull tile, it kinda clashes with the rest of the set.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Refuse Stockpile/Dump
« on: March 12, 2010, 03:51:26 pm »
As you have discovered, refuse stockpiles don't work like dump zones, and AFAIK there's no way to automatically designate certain items to be dumped.  What I have done on my latest fort was to build an automatic and fairly complex machine which determines via pressure plates when a dwarf has entered and then left a refuse stockpile, then locks off access to the stockpile and pumps magma over the stockpile contents to incinerate them.  It's a rather complex mechanism requiring dozens of mechanisms, multiple floor hatches, three magma-safe pumps, a constant power supply and a source of magma, but does the job of automatically incinerating garbage, and so far has yet to accidentally incinerate any dwarves.

I would love to see the specs for this..

It matters because people are bitching about donations. There's rather a large ? where expense information is, and the amount made off of donations is either quite a bit or next to nothing, depending on those expenses. All, literally ALL, this is doing is clearing the air.

I fail to see how this is useful in any way. If you want to support the game, donate, if you don't, don't. A donation shouldn't be based on the lifestyle you perceive the developer to deserve from his efforts.

I don't begrudge people who like graphical tilesets, but I find the ASCII easier to view honestly. Certain ASCII symbols jump out easier to me than the graphical counterparts.

I don't agree that the game is inaccessible without the wiki (although it is a great resource!). I enjoyed the game before it, and I found the discovery fun.

DF General Discussion / Re: Steep Learning Curve
« on: March 08, 2010, 03:01:47 pm »
I think it's kinda a double-edged sword. I love the complexity of the game and find it incredibly fun almost because it's so difficult to get your mind around.. however, it does make it difficult to pull others into enjoying it as well. However, I think a lot would be lost from the game if it ended up 'dumbed down' to pull in a larger audience.

I think one of the greatest parts about the game is how it's so easy to pick a path to failure, since it's not intuitively obvious what's the best way to manage your resources from the get go - or even what you need to do! That path of discovery (with a lot of trial and error) just makes successes even more satisfying to me.

DF General Discussion / Re: Things that are not fun
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:58:47 pm »
The thing I dislike the most is how stone stockpiles work. If dwarves moved the closest stone into the stockpile instead of searching out the last mined stone, I'd have much more reason to use them.

I have an issue trying to use backspace when entering text. I'm on OSX. When I press it, a triangle type character appears. I found a discussion on this in the d15 thread with a suggested fix, but that didn't seem to work for me.

Curses / Repeatable LCS Crash Bug
« on: July 13, 2004, 04:22:00 pm »
Forgive me if this is mentioned in another post; I briefly looked but did not find anything describing anything similar.

The crash is repeatable on my system (running Windows XP) through the following steps:

1) Start a new game, answer questions, blah blah blah
2) Go forth and stop EVIL
3) Choose any safe house
4) Hit Z to view next location (view any location you want)
5) Wait a day
6) CRASH!

I have not tested many variations of this procedure, this is the simpilest method I have found to recreate the crash.  This is very annoying when I have not saved the game (by quitting and returning).  Is it possible for future versions to simply save the game before performing each "wait" action.  That way, if a crash occurs, you can restart at the point you left off.

Anyways; hope this helps.
