Curses / Re: Entry 100034236 of the same question
« on: February 05, 2016, 07:07:28 pm »
Is there a way to tell which I have?  The copy I got yesterday is 4.07.0, but I'm not sure if that is r855, r864 or other
4.07.0 has two years, it's old

There are more official release after that one. Here is 4.07.4: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=125452.0
I don't recommend playing that one, it is incomplete IIRC.

I think 4.07.1 was good. It's the last one without the multiple cities thing.
You should try the last one from the svn anyway. If you don't like it, go for 4.07.1

I'm sorry in advance to be that guy, but where can I find the latest version (compiled or not) version of LCS.

I had a look at a few like the r855 if that's correct and it seems to be a version older than the main one, even thought people are saying that the former is the latest.

Am I confusing things or is there something I am missing?

Effectively, the r855 is obsolete.

The current revision, as of today, is the r864, and the official source for the code is here.
Is there an updated changelog anywhere? The one in the repo hasn't been updated since '07. That's... almost a decade now.
I the posts fox make for each release

Curses / Re: Music Format Poll: Ogg Vorbis vs. MIDI

So far I've got maybe a third or so of the Ogg music ready and at 64 kbps and the filesizes aren't THAT extreme. They are well within the predicted range, I'm not sure whether it'll end up coming out above or below 80 megabytes for all the Ogg music, but it seems my prediction on the filesize was fairly accurate. Also the sound quality really is quite nice, for most of these songs. I'm going to commit a new revision once I have Ogg Vorbis versions of all the music. It'll have both Ogg Vorbis and MIDI audio in the art directory. Then when you download the game you'll be able to pick which one you want (the one with .ogg files or the one with .mid files).
Sounds good

Maybe it would be a nice to have separated folders inside art for midi, ogg, maps, etc. That way, making a the midi version for a new release is just deleting art/ogg/ and making the zip

May be mor usefull to encode the music with both formats and then compare both quality and file size with real data

Don't email the files to me, I'm probably not going to be who fixes this

You could upload them somewhere else and post the links

Which version are you playing?

Having save.dat and gamelog.txt would be helpful

Curses / Re: What version? No, seriously, what version?
« on: August 18, 2014, 07:54:45 pm »
4.07.0 is the last version considered stable by jonathan
4.07.4 is newer, but beta. It more features and bugfixes but it isn't really finished and tested, so things can fail (like you saw)
4.06 from sourceforge is old. Don't use that
The lastest version is in the svn repo at sourceforge, but it's just the source code and you need to compile it before playing. This is where you can see the current state of development

Curses / Re: Will you help me to understand the state of LCS?
« on: August 11, 2014, 10:48:59 am »
The most important thing to me is that playing the national version feels weird, like incomplete or very unpolished. I didn't played much since you stopped working on it because of that.

Something else i may have mentioned before: why LCS doesn't have a real bug tracker? It could be nice to have a list of bugs to kill when one wants to code

Try this: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=125452.0
Or maybe the svn code
It's not fully finished but there are many bug fixes.

1 and 6 are nice
2 seems like over complicated. In short time we will figure wich option is better and just use that
5 also sounds too much
Im not sure about 7. Maybe bad drivers should make mistakes with no need of adding more car types
8 should be affected by police regulation laws. Like in C+ they just randomly stop you and in L+ they just wave you because they are afraid of losing their job

Fox, can you explain why it uses street sense?

Talking to people helps a lot to avoid being seen when stealing a car, that doesn't sound right.
Street Sense is sort of like common sense, but more oriented towards knowing the city's ins and outs well and being experienced in how it operates. So that could include knowing where certain people (The people with the skills you want) hang out in the city, how to identify them, etcetera which would fall under street sense I believe.

Maybe it involves the way your Liberal perceives a person.  For example, asking every person you see isn't efficient, while knowing the "look" of them would help.  Just a guess.
It makes sense
I still have two problems with it: it makes training stree sense too easy and boring and doing the same in site mode doesn't need that skill.

Instead of texts like
Quote
Bob releases Frank by: X.
You could use something like

Quote
Bob opens the door and throws Frank back to the streets
or
Quote
Bob returns Frank to his [adjetive] conservative life.

I'm playing now.

Haven't found any bugs yet, but travel menu feels a little wrong.
In the old versions it was easy to find a place, everything was organized. Now, site locations in the city look more random.
It may be me being used to the old way, but I think it's not.
I understand this can be more realistic but please consider another way to do it.

Also, I used to use that menu to see the heat in my safehouses. Now, If my squads are in Los Angeles and my programmers are stealing credit cards in Seattle, I have no idea how to check the heat in the seattle safehouse.

Edit:
Quote
----ITEM-----------------CURRENT LOCATION----------NEW LOCATION-----------------
A - AK-47 (30)           Projects                  1 - Shelter
B - Aslt/Rifle Mag       Projects                  2 - Meat Plant
C - Laptop               Projects                  3 - Projects
                                                   4 - Warehouse
                                                   5 - Shelter
                                                   6 - Shelter
                                                   7 - Cement
                                                   8 - Shelter
                                                   9 - Fertilizer
There are too many places with the same name, looks like I have to guess a little. Maybe you could add the city name in the repeated locations
