DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: October 11, 2020, 10:49:02 am »
Finally have managed to figure out how to make it out of the early-game. Food and drinks are all in order, the manager was recently elected to mayor, and I've made my first soap. The day is good.
Yay Sugardust. Now the fun begins! (The FUN was always there and likely won't go away.)

I'm having connection problems, it wont let me connect locally or online. I port forwarded both default ports 8000 and 1234 TDP/UDP and using localhost:8000 and 192.168.1.143:8000 on Microsoft edge and Chrome with no luck. The post says you will see the port on DFHack when you launch DF but I only saw the port appear when I launched it for the first time and it doesnt show up anymore. I also downloaded everything 64 bit.
Chrome has issues. Some folks have gotten around it. See what happens if you use a different browser.

Not bad for that much rain, n'est pas?
(but there has not been a LARGE seige yet, haha)
The bonus is they're all operating at peak efficiency above ground with no appreciable cave adaptation.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that I've taken to open-air barracks and archery targets to prevent cave adaption. My recent fort also had an open air temple and the tavern required passing through sun to keep civilians and emergency draftees okay being in the sun too,  but it only rained like 2 times in the badlands I was in so that wasn't a concern really.
I have considered digging out the roof of my barracks to make them "outside" or lit, whichever it is which changes, but since all my fighting *should* be indoors I decided not to slow things down with that. I like the 5z-high path lined with traps strategy, so my militia is usually waiting for invaders in a room at the end of that path. And then there's cavern opponents.

Thanks for your responses so far. I'm taking it in and reconsidering what I might do, or possibly course adjustments once I get going.

Keep 'em coming!

Dont forget, you can toss a vampire in the bottom of a well with an upright spike,
How do you do that? Tossing the vampire?
I build a special, new 1x1 well with an entry room I can burrow and then lock the vampire into. You can hook the spike up to a lever so you can stab whenever you please. The blood won't always be winched up with the bucket, so it can be hard. Sometimes it can take multiple vampires.
Oh you put the vamp in the bottom of what will become the well, then fill it later.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Preferred Soldier characteristics

How do you all select who will be in your militia? In previous plays I would select anyone who had existing weapon skills, or someone who was in excellent physical shape. Except for me all-soldier attempts in which everyone who wasn't noble (especially doctors) was recruited.

On my next fort (probably in a few months, I'm a streamer and that's when I expect to get back to DF,) I plan on focusing only on their personalities. At the moment I plan to enlist every dwarf which is confident, high discipline, values martial prowess, respects skill development, and not low discord. I think that list is too long though and is going to leave me with very few candidates.

So how do you recuit?

Dear militia,

When I order you to station on the tower top, the goal is to protect the marksdwarves against climbing goblins. No need to use the tree branches hanging over the fortifications to get out and get stupidly killed by the goblins that still haven't managed to climb up.
lol

DF Modding / Re: Flag to auto-attack?

My goal is to not have to micromanage killing the birds and monkeys etc which steal things.

Oh, you misunderstand. I'm not wanting to make dwarves fighter. I want certain creatures to be kill on sight. I'm operating under the assumption that goblins, lycanthropes, FB and the like don't have to throw the first lunch, that dwarves know they need to die.

DF Modding / Flag to auto-attack?

Is there a flag I can modify to make dwarves(those who are willing--militia, brave enough, etc) attack creatures on sight? Just like if it was a goblin, troll, or FB. I tried a few different searches in the kobol raw but I didn't find what I was looking for.

Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Serious military expectations
« on: August 28, 2020, 06:51:43 am »
For the most part I enjoy the chaotic nature of dwarves' personality and the absence of direct control in the game. But there is one place I would like to see more stringent expectations, and that's the military.

I don't know anything about modding, and I'm not necessarily looking to get into it (my plate is overflowing as it is), but would these concepts be possible?
a) Participation expectations of every member of an active squad (assuming orders.)
b) Militia commander generating punishment for insubordination.
c) Maybe even dwarfs who value safety(is that a thing, don't know off top of head) being displeased with dwarves not putting a good search effort into fort security.

Did she get injured breaking into cavern?

You can avoid forbidding the items if your dwarves can't access them. Put the retracting bridge or trapdoor one level lower, and add a locked door to the side for emergency access.
So you can minecart to a hole, below the hole is an inaccessible trapdoor. I pull a lever and the contents go down the whitechute (what an aweful autocorrect!)
