DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why are my dwarves always sad?

I did just check, realize that the library was empty, and began turning every dorf that wandered in into a scholar. One book so far. Hope it helps?

According to my dorks thoughts they are lonely, eat terrible meals, don't pray, are board with life, don't sleep in their 'like a personal palace' rooms much, and are not creatively stimulated.

The dorks are living in one of the most luxurious forts in the world, there are 70+ rooms unclaimed , the corpse and refuse stock piles are located in remote rooms where no one is able to see the contents, and the dorks are very well entertained & fed ( over 5,000 fine meals available, many are master crafted ).

I am thinking there are a few AI issues that need fixed TBH .  :-\
I suddenly decided to train up a few scholars, hope it helps. That's one itch they can scratch now.

Current fort is very unhappy ... very unhappy.

The max population is capped at 100 - I'm losing 2 - 3 per season to depression, fights, or insanity.
The last mayor personally killed 2 dorks .

On the plus side, every single dork has grand quarters with gem studded and ivory inlaid furniture ... there is also a legendary dining room with excellent food, an individual temple to every single god - completely engraved -, huge library which attracts the tantrum dorks like flies, great burial tombs for all the dead dorks, nice and big tavern currently stocked with 12 wondering bards, master crafted rings and earnings, expertly made leather clothing for all, and of course a large amount of 'generated wealth' from master crafted bone & shell crafts .

I have no clue why everyone is very unhappy - their thoughts make no sense considering that they are living in a luxuriously appointed fort with almost all the comforts this game offers.
I'm going to lose this fort in about 2 years (give or take ) - not to beasts that roam the underdark, not to elves, not to goblins, but the undoing is going to be angry dorks killing each other .
That is also my experience.  I've been running this fort for over ten years in-game on migrants, but the suicide rate is distressingly high.

Recently picked up the game after a long hiatus, and spent my time per usual building needlessly large structures outside while winding my way through the ground, and I've been disturbed to watch nearly all of my dwarves eventually succumb to suicide.

I've built temples, established a tavern, established a library, set up some reasonably nice jail cells, a sizable hospital, tried to keep folks busy by stuffing our stores with crafts...

But no matter what happens dwarf life now seems to consist of a steadily spreading malaise of constant fistfights and fits of ever-increasing bouts of melancholia, depression and death.

Is there a better way, or is this the norm until the next update comes along?

My first tantrum spiral, which included the vampiric mayor being beaten to death by a child, and one lone survivor of the fort, standing there, training with her copper axe in the midst of the carnage.

We rebuilt.

It has been quiet, lots of dumping. Though one of the founding three just got mangled by a giant buzzard. I think he'll live, though for some reason he's not going to the hospital, even with heavy bleeding.

I think I will have to go ahead and build that castle.

The only name that ever stuck in my mind was BlanketFort, which I found highly amusing considering I build them all the time  for my kids, too.
That's really sweet.

I've seen one. They're still around.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Does the size of Goblin Armies matter?
« on: January 28, 2018, 09:58:47 pm »
Had a massive goblin siege, I'd guess maybe 100 or so mounted on beak dogs? I lost 21 mostly-legendary warriors beating them back. I think my total army was about 35 dorfs. I think it might have been exhaustion, or they were simply surrounded and overwhelmed.

I think size matters. In the past, I've often built a fail-safe death trap to protect against any eventuality. A long catwalk, covered with weapon traps, crossing a very deep pit usually works well. Last time I ran one, made it about 10 z-levels and the few goblins who survived the fall unmaimed were easily mopped up.

On the other hand, that kind of security gets boring after a while.

I've also noticed that, while it is very convenient for getting rid of crap and freeing up stockpile space, bulk-selling the crappy armor and shredded clothes of goblins seems a bit of an exploit.

Just watched a legendary axe lord chase down a pack of troglodytes and then name his steel battleaxe.

I was curious, and saw that this axe had been previously owned by the last militia commander, who had died heroically in a massive goblin siege.

The axe is named Idashabod, Moistenedstrikes.

The axe lord currently wielding it is named Inod Boatsliving, the Luxurious Temptation.

I decided to send the new recruits after some troglodytse, figured it'd be easy combat-training.

Three of them died.

By drowning.

I had to send a more seasoned squad in the clean up the mess.

Otherwise, things are quiet. I had to build an icy staircase at the top of a waterfall because a few marksdwarves had somehow got stuck on the waterfall while it was frozen. Now, for aesthetic reasons, I'm waiting for the next freeze so I can deconstruct the emergency stairs.

Trying to decide whether to retire while the going is good or go for the monarchy. There's a hillock nearby that I'm tempted to balance an entire castle on, just for fun. But that would be a lot of work and I'd also like to expand this civilization's empire, which currently consists of my current fort and the mountainhome.

Decisions, decisions...

Or researching them, or trying to drum up political support for their cause in the tavern.... :D

The new squad is too busy praying, reading, and socializing to actually, you know, train.

Dorfs these days. No discipline, I tell you.  ::)

I just had that complaint, and when the giant showed up, I discovered that I had forgot to put them on an active training schedule.
These guys are on "active duty." They're in uniform. They're just still spending all their time in recreational activities.

Oh right...I forgot to assign them to the barracks. Derp.  :-[
