Arright, looks like "Impaled Corpses" don't quite work.

Well... they do, but a) they won't impale fellow goblins, and b) it's possible to impale anything else creature-related on them. Including bones, skin, meat, hair, etc. You could make a couple dozen "impaled corpses" out of a single dwarf. Which kind of defeats the point if they're supposed to be trophies.

Oh well. Should still be able to butcher sentients, so I'm sure we can work out ways to entertain ourselves.

392
Will you share your modded version of the mod, or will we have to mod the mod ourselves to fit with the save? Alternatively, will the modded save work with vanilla DF?
The modded raws will be included with the save, so you can open it in vanilla. Dwarf Fortress is good like that.

Are you using the 42.0x version of that mod or the 40.24?
42.0x. The new version.

Since goblins have to drink now, will they need booze or are they going to be fine with just water? Because if they need booze, no farming would make that difficult.
They're not alcohol dependant, so they'll be fine so long as we've got water. Booze will just be a way to make them a little happier.

Trade caravans in summer and winter- is that humans and goblins? I remember somewhere that gobs need pack animals modded in in order to trade and idk if the mod/you takes that into account.
It's goblins and goblins, since nobody will trade with us. The All Races Playable mod makes Beak Dogs into a pack animal.

Nustngom, "Thunderdoom"!

"Oi! You'se lot! Listen up you rotten piles of vomit, I'se talkin'! I SAID LISTEN UP!"

"You all knows what happens when we's fights the dwarves, right? We'se lose! Shut yer yaps! It's true! You all know it's true! Theys drops rocks on us an' cuts bits off of us wid swords and' weapon traps an' smacks us wid warhammers an' babies an' drop us into pits an' onto spikes an' drowns us an' burns us an' freezes us an' throws us in lava an' encases us in obsidian an' makes hill titans an' beasts eat us!"

"But I've 'ad an' idea! The reason theys can do all o' these horrible things is cos we'se fightin' em on their home turf! Wot we gotta do, right, is get them to come to us! An' I know just how to do it!"

"Wot we do, right, is we send out a few scouts an' build a hidden war camp in the jungle right next to 'em, but, an' stay wit me on this one, right, we don't attack 'em. We wait for 'em to find us, an' then they attack us instead, 'cos they can't just leave us there next to 'em. And then we can do all those things they do to us, cos it'll be on our own turf an' we'll be ready for 'em!"

"So come on then, you pond scum! Let's go give those midgets some o' their own medicine! An' by medicine I'se mean pain an' death an' stabbings! WHO'S WITH ME!?"

So, I'm toying with the idea of starting a succession goblin war encampment using a variation of this all-races-playable mod, with some changes.

Don't worry, you don't need to install the mod to play. We'll copy the modded files around with the save: it'll be playable with vanilla DF.

The latest version of the Playable Goblins mod is here if you want to mess with it: http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=11705. In addition to the stuff in Thunderdoom (below), it also adds goblin nobles, skull thrones and a variety of tools that were missing. Note that as of 42.05, sapients can't be butchered even with modding. We're hopeful that 42.06 will fix this.

I was checking on the Forgotten Beast Vafice when I notice this diplomat Esme (human) law-giver vampire waiting outside.  So I was right to not open the gates for trade.

Esme's back! And we've locked her outside in the goblin-yeti-and-zombie-infested blizzard.

This seems a bit hypocritical to me. I mean, we let the cannibal in, didn't we?

How unfortunate that Black Pat is the most skilled in doctoring duties.  Fortunately, Honeymoon and Quasar have dabbling doctoring skills.

Fortunate indeed! I'll get the upright spike ready. Does anyone have any spare leeches? Maybe some forgotten beast blood?

Since I'd quite like to do something in 42.03, I shall request a turn. As far as embarking goes, the following would be my suggestions:

* Somewhere tropical. The strip is effectively a resort destination: to fit the Vegas theme, I'd suggest a sand desert. Or alternatively a seaside jungle.

* As far as scale goes, I'd suggest a small world and a 1x6 embark: maybe even a 1x9. Remember, a default 4x4 is 16 tiles in full, so you can make a 1x-something embark pretty big without risking fps death.

* You may want to amp up the mineral frequency to ensure we can get steel, too.

Is there any rule against mass deforestation?
No rule, though I'd suggest at least sparing the orchard for the sake of high quality olive-oil soap and the other cookable and brewables the herbalist guild brings in.

2)  This fort is far and away the most mineral rich fort I've ever played.  I can't recall of even hearing about another fort that has more minerals.
So we build a farm. Seems legit.

Going through the save now... holy shit, the second cavern layer is the creepiest thing I've ever seen in dwarf fortress.

It's surprisingly large and open, some open area's are 14 stories from floor to roof. The air is completely still that far down, and the ground completely covered in a thick layer of reddish-brown... mud. Let's call it mud.

A lone troll wades through the mud. Perhaps she is lost, seeking a way out of this cavern. She ignores the way it seems to suck at her skin, trying to pull her down, as she plods dumbly forward in the darkness.

There are shapes sticking up out of the mud. It takes the mind a moment to process what exactly they are... it at first see's them as some sort of flora, perhaps an underground tree, or branch. And then it discerns the the shape of a femur, or a tibia, and they come into sudden focus...

There are hundreds down there. Giant bats, troglodytes, trolls, elk birds, blind cave ogres, molemarians, even the mangled chitin of a Giant Cave Spider. All crushed, long ago. Their blood and fluids long ago lost into the layer of mud, feeding it, making it stronger. You now see it is moving, ever so slowly creeping up the rocks of walls as if trying to consume them...

And in the middle of this all, at the base of an enormous 13z cavern, a glint of green flashes gently...

Stones, valuable gems, but not ones any dwarf would touch. Cursed. The remnants of a terrible, ancient enemy.

Could Thol Anan have been killed by the elk bird whose bones lie beside it? Was it immobilized and consumed by the creeping mud? Or does something far worse lurk deeper within the dark caverns? We may never know, but one thing's for sure.

I am *not* going in there. Fuck that cavern layer.

Perhaps in retaliation, the diplomat then went on the longest rendition of recent elven history imaginable.

Spoiler: We don't really care about this (click to show/hide)

We might do so sooner or later. The Hell of Emancipating continue their march. Looks like the Lucid Fragrances have lost 3 more sites to them. I actually feel kind of sorry for the poor bastards: they share land with the gobbo's, so they're being hit hardest.

All that remained was Matryscribes himself.  Cut and bruised, his dark black eyes gazed at our military, ready to defend himself once more should the situation call for it.  While I was too far from the battlefield to be sure, I could have sworn I saw our lads simply nod and turn away towards Techno's battle in the moat.

I do not know whether it was prudence that kept the militia from attacking the beast, shared respect for it's martial prowess, or simply the fact that Taupe freezes up whenever one of our trained hamsters looks at him. I can't imagine he reacted well to being assessed by a Hamster Lord in it's wild habitat.

Either way, good call. Fucking good call. They tolerate us, for now. Perhaps they find us amusing, or merely beneath their notice. But I dread to think what they would do to us if we made ourselves their enemies.

Datan Mafolobok was selected for the next trial run of the system.  Unfortunately, there were no adverse effects at all.  Either Datan is of sturdier stuff than Kib was, another fluke in the trial, or the modifications made in the late spring are to blame.  Another trial for Datan has been scheduled once the system is reset to verify.

I think I'm getting my dwarf!me's mixed up. The dwarf me from Icehold, the Professor, heartily approves of your scientific efforts. Unfortunately, he's in another universe.

The dwarf me from Breadbowl, the Iron Chef/Mayor, on the other hand, is concerned and suspicious to find that people are hiding things from her in Breadbowl, and thinks she and her respect-knife need to come to your office for a little chat...

On a happier note, Lor's body was given back to Armok by encasing it in obsidian.  With the aquifer water purified, the second well was reopened.  No more waiting in line for baths or fetching water.

Oh that's beautiful. A more fitting end could not be had for The Child In The Well. Bravo!

Unfortunately, the caravan wasn't the only new arrival to Breadbowl.  A sinister hum resonating through the first cavern announced a visitor.

The forgotten beast Dogekul has come! A gigantic scaly bee.

Surely that was no human bee!

That reminds me. We need at least 40 hives, if we don't already have them. Breadbowl will not be complete without the delicious honeys.

Quote
A silver lining to the tragedy: a giant cave spider was engaged in a battle with a giant olm, then wandered into one of the cages in the caverns immediately after the battle. This will be a boon to our silk industry and should eliminate the need for us to remain in the caverns.

A female, too! Once it's trained and released from it's cage, we may be able to breed them if it mates with a passing male. Yum Yay!

Welp.

jwoodward48df has bowed out, leaving us without any overseer left in the queue.

I may not be online for the next 10 days, so if you want the next turn, just download the latest save and get started.

First come, first served.

Lesser of two evils. The alternative would be to let traders from the vampire civilisation into icehold proper. And worse, elves (if they should ever arrive).

The flooded adamantine spire... How did you manage that one by the way?
Well, technically that was Onul and Honeymoon's doing, but I'll take credit for it. Here's what it does and was totally designed to do from the beginning:

I was going to make you a better one but the idea of actually moving some furniture in Icehold is a fool's dream.
I eventually worked out Igor was pretty much the only one who does any useful work around here, and he's paralyzed from the legs down, soooo...

Nah, none of those. My flaw is worse.

See, those are things that are likely to cause mass casualties and death should the worst come to pass.

The flaw I'm thinking of is certain to cause mass casualties and death should the worst come to pass.

It's gonna be great.

(Edit) Assuming we don't all murder each other in the meanwhile. I suppose it was only a matter of time before our anarchic little prison went to the bad.

I'm so happy the first murder was done by one of the serial killers, though. It seems appropriate that they'd be the ones to get the party started. Besides, Dumed totally deserved it. If there's one thing worse than a murderer, it's a dwarf who pulls levers recklessly.

That said, it is possible to reduce stress, but it takes a couple years and complete isolation from bad thoughts. The chances of that happening in icehold are... probably somewhat lower than the chances of everyone in the fort killing each other and then eating the survivors.

"Welcome to Icehold: we have a cannibal."
That needs to go in the quote bank. :)

(Edit) Speaking of, another suggestion for the quote bank, from early in icehold's history:

Black Pat sums up Icehold's purpose:
We're here because we're bad. Simple as that.

(Edit)

By the way, there's a design flaw in Icehold I've wanted to comment on for a while, but it may prove spoilery and/or change the course of the game if the overseer decides to fix it.

So I'm avoiding saying anything for now, but I will post this comment simply so that I can say "called it" when terrible and hilarious things happen. :D

Quasar is friends with all the kids in the fortress! I thought that was creepy until I checked his age, did you know he's only 15 QuQuasar? He's younger than DeMarco.
Wait, what?

Surely not. That can't be right! You must be mistaken.

I mean heck, if that was the case, the Professor would have barely been past 12 back when he took overseershiiiiii-

Oh.

Well... um...

Meanwhile we can get this place cleaned up, at least a bit. Thob says we desperately need more furniture.

The 'aren't enough dining tables' thought is a bit misleading. It can mean one of two things:

* There are chairs somewhere without tables next to them. Dwarves will eat from the nearest unassigned chair and whine if there's no table next to it.
* There are tables which have two chairs adjacent to them. Dwarves won't share tables, so if dwarf A is using chair 1 and the table, and dwarf B decides to use chair 2, dwarf B will whine about it.

Breadbowl is actually a site I wouldn't mind setting up a sequel to. There's a few things I learned that I would like to put into practice:

* You need to embark on a tropical/temperate border to grow the maximum number of crops.
* Given the nature of the goal (maximising production and livestock), a 3x3 embark may be a better choice for FPS purposes.
* Turns should start from the beginning of winter, rather than spring. This way the new overseer doesn't include the previous overseers winter production in their trade counts.
* we should trade *all* the edible stuff we make, not just the prepared meals. At the moment we have a serious excess of plants.

Not until the new version becomes stable, though. Besides, new version or no, I'd still like to see this story go on for a few more years yet. I've grown attached to these dwarves, and with the Hell of Emancipating looking to conquer the entire world I think the story is only going to get more interesting these next few years.

I've PM'd PyroTechno about his turn. If he turns it down, I'll PM jwoodward48df.
