@ weelillad -- You're right, I forgot.  You'll have a dwarf after the next update.  You posted right about when I was spamming the thread with everybody's stat updates, I think that's why I didn't see your post.

@ jimbo -- You're still hunting, I just forgot to put you on the list.  Took a brief break to get hauling caught up but you're back in the wild now, as it were.

I've decided to break the next post up instead of having one huge one.

1st Felsite, 1053(Late Spring)

Once again there was a lot of work to be done.  After another meeting with the now Mayor-Elect Troy McClure, who was managing to only swell his head to about eight times its normal size with the recent news, he concluded that they still had plenty of food(2 years supply) and that the current group of planters could keep up with the additional dwarves.  The alcohol supply had been holding steady though, so they’d need another still and brewer to even keep up.  21 more bedrooms of course were needed, and that meant a bunch more doors and beds, and with other supplies such as barrels and bins running low, they’d need a second carpenter at least for a while.  Larger stockpiles were needed for lumber, furniture, and food – there was no lack of projects to be done.

New workshops would be needed in various areas, but first Crunch and Joe needed to dig the room – and G.B. would be needed to carve more living space out of the valuable magnetite on the lowest level.

Of the most immediate concern was the military – it was decided to expand the number of dwarves under arms(though technically with still very few weapons, nobody was actually under arms) to 18.  5 would go to the newly formed Fortress Guard, and the first marksdwarves squad would be filled out.  With that many dwarves, there was now need of an overall field commander, to be given the rank of Lord.  Such an honor could only be given to the dwarf that showed the most fearsome combat skills, and in fact all squads were re-organized with the most fearsome dwarf in the squad as their leader.  The new militia details were as follows:

Lord Drip(I really hope this name grows on me.  Cause right now I find it hard to fathom).

Champions:  Kinneus, Oddom, Onol

1st Squad(Wrestlers):  Kinneus, Mafol, Besmar, Zuglar
2nd Squad(Wrestlers):  Oddom, Sigun, Bregarm, Led
3rd Squad(Marksdwarves):  Onol, Melbil, Ast, Ast

Lord Drip trains with the Wrestlers of 1st Squad, with Kinneus effectively acting as his X executive officer.  There aren’t enough bolts for the 3rd Squad to train consistently, but they’ll be built an archery range and get some training in when they can eventually.  There will be some interesting situations in 3rd Squad with the two Asts there – I’ll leave the rest up to the imagination.

The initial members of the Fortress Guard, reserved for recruits not considered proficient enough for militia duty:

Aban, Sigun, Ingish, Nil, Erib – recent peasant immigrants all, commanded of course by Captain Mayday.

Well, that was that – 18 dwarves in active service.  Duties had to be assigned for the other 40.

Nobles – Nil(Broker), Captain Mayday(Captain of the Guard), Troy McClure(Mayor and general accountant)
Farming – Puu, Xotes, Catten, Stoutscribe
Brewing – erith, Tosid(close enough to cheesemaking, a skill not likely to be needed, to put it mildly).
Mining – Crunch, Joe Pratt
Engraving – Tun
Woodcutters – Skullcleaver, Reg(the only dwarf with any skill to replace Captain Mayday here).  Reg is also the new bowyer, when it is required.
Carpenters – Lokum, Geshud
Masons – Flamester
Craftsdwarves – Phantom, Nes, Udib
Furnace Operators – Blitz
Wood Burners -- Ingish
Haulers – Zon, Ilral, Udib, Mistress Shiny, Urist, Kel, Asen, Nomal, Momuz, Id, Deler

Mid-Spring, 1053

The elves finally had arrived, and they unloaded their caravan.  First, a number of small bags of herbs, none of which the dwarves could grow underground and so Nil was very interested in these.  Then they starting unloading their rope reed cloth.  And more rope reed cloth.  And more after that.  Dozens upon dozens upon dozens of stacks of it.  He asked them to stop, but they paid him no mind.  Where were the arrows?  The bows?  The shields?  The anything whatsoever that is usefuls?

They had none.

Disgusted that he had wasted his dwarves’ time by  having them haul their craft bins up here, Nil bought out the herbs and told the elves to leave before he totally lost his temper.  What a ridiculous bunch of fools they were – what the heck could he possibly need a bazillion metric tons of rope reed cloth for?  They had some already from last year – it was collecting dust in a bin and hadn’t been touched.  What a ridiculous waste.

20th Slate – New immigrants have arrived!!  This time Nil greeted them with open arms.  The only thing Mistemikud needed now was an anvil, and the sooner the better – Blitz had already started accumulating some iron bars at the smelter, all that was needed was an anvil and Kira could get to work on her true calling – making iron catnip!!  Ahem, I mean making armor and weapons for the militia.

By the time everybody was signed in, the count was 21 new dwarves, ballooning the Mistemikud population to 58 able-bodied occupants.  Troy was named Mayor, while Sheriff Captain Mayday was promoted to Captain of the Fortress Guard, immediately requesting five recruits for said duty.  Naturally both of them demanded an upgrade in their quarters.

24th Slate -- Sparksol finally breathed his last, dying of thirst and muttering something incomprehensible the entire time.  He would be buried right where he died ... but first, there was an avalanche of dwarves descending upon his quarters to claim his gear, such as it was.  So much for death with dignity.

Sparksol claims the dubious honor of being the first dwarf to die at Mistemikud -- and a totally worthless death it was too.

Ok, I'll repeat myself again.  They will come AFTER THE NEXT IMMIGRANT WAVE.  Being that I can't see the future and we haven't gotten to another immigrant wave yet, I clearly can't tell you exactly when that will be.

I update those every time there's an immigration.  You were one of the most recent immigrants, and your skills were posted at that time.  They'll be posted again with the next wave, or the end of the year, whichever comes first.

Early Spring, 1053

An uneventful month, and it seemed it would never end.  15 loads of charcoal have been amassed from the Wood Furnace, a decent start towards fuel for an eventual metalworking operation.  Frumple has finally managed to get around to start designing the smelter as well.  All's well on the food and alcohol supplies front -- the rum is almost gone but the first crop of sweet pods will be ready soon, so that won't be very long of a shortage this year.  As the month of Slate arrives, the elves have come again bearing more of their wares, such as they are, and with combat training proceeding fairly well now with several of the dwarves having completed the basics of hand-to-hand combat, leather armor has been assigned to all of the militia.

Late Winter, 1052

Nil commissioned the first building that needed designing by wanna-be architect Frumple, a Wood Furnace – which made wanna-be smith a happy dwarf indeed.

20th Obsidian – A change in Sparksol’s ‘condition’, and not for the better.  He’s manifested true insanity, pounding on the door and walls of his room.  Nil ordered all dwarves except those in the militia to stay as far away as possible.  Sadly, he ordered Troy to remove the apparently doomed dwarf from the roll call.

Kyshya has been very successful – too successful.  She is killing quickly, sometimes faster than the other dwarves can keep up and some of them have rotted with the backlog of hauling duties in other areas.  He never thought he’d say this a few months ago, but Nil is hoping for new immigrants, and soon – keeping the food supplies up is a joke now, and there’s more work than he can find dwarves for.  Kyshya also reports that the wolves are gone, though she didn’t kill any.  A cougar has been spotted in the area, however.

And while there’s more animal carcasses than anyone knows what to do with, where is Surath, who begged for supplies to make leather and skins and Armok knows what else?

Yep, that’s right – sleeping(and snoring rather loudly too, I might add).

And then’s good old Goblin Basher(G.B.).  Nil had him a kennel built, so he could train his dogs to attack enemies of Mistemikud.  He’d been asking for that for over a YEAR, and the militia could always use more help.  And just after he finished it, he was about to set to work beginning their training, and … he decided right then and there that he just HAD to have a plump helmet.  Couldn’t possibly wait.  Hundreds of plump helmets sitting in storage for months, and NOW he must have one before he did anything.  Sheesh.

The schematic below shows the kennels location, west of main sleeping quarters and north of the barracks, on the second level(red clay).  You’ll note the room hasn’t been completely excavated:  that’s because Crunch and Joe didn’t finish it before they decided to sleep as well.  It’s a wonder anything gets done in Mistemikud with all this nonsense and laziness going on.

As the second year comes to a close, Nil has authorized Frumple to begin designing the next stage in working towards the eventual production of metal objects.  Guess what Frumple was doing when the order was given.  GUESS!!!

Yep, he’s sleeping, and that’s how the year ended.
