DF Modding / Creating dwarves?
« on: October 08, 2008, 05:53:07 pm »
Recently, I have had a desire to screw around with vast amounts of dwarven wrestlers and builders.

I have one main question: Is it possible to, in any way at all, create a dwarf during gameplay that will act like a normal dwarf.

I have tried making dwarves count as pets and then smelting them, but when I did, they were stuck on the smelter, and when I removed the smelter they were uncontrollable, and just wandered about.

My friend supposedly has a friend who found a way to brew plump helmets into dwarves, but the friend has been away so my friend can't ask him.

Now, I have been thinking of making an animal called "Dwarf Pod" that, when killed, drops like 50 dwarves or something. Anybody know if I could do this?

Does anybody have any suggestions about how to create dwarves ingame?

I have two ideas for you. At the next siege, conscript everyone as an unarmoured wrestler and just rush the goblins, or try to flood everything above your fort, then open one door and see how your dwarves react.

Currently, I have two main projects planned:

A giant stone cauldron that will fill with water from the river that runs through my map, that will flood the space between my fortress walls and the perimeter walls. The water will drain by being pumped back into the cauldron.

A big wall with a solid rock bottom level (besides secret hallways for my soldiers to move through) and a floored second level. Every screens-width or so (like 30 tiles) I'll make a tower. Like the great wall of china.

I'll probably do the wall thing first, since that will be simplest to build, and my marksdwarves can use it. I'll probably make a small scale water flooding chamber later, since I haven't worked with water very much and I don't want to deal with flooding my entire map (I have walled off about 8 screen's worth of tiles, and I'm at 125x50 tiles, that's a lot of water to pump around).

So for now, I'll probably stick with making a huge maze of traps for goblins to go through: first a couple cage traps (so I can make a colliseum), then a series of lever operated spike traps, then a bridge trap that leads down to whatever I feel like (perhaps a bunch of war dogs), then a series of atom smashers, all placed randomly, then a drowning chamber (in case I don't want my soldiers to get tired :P) then if I let them get passed all that they can rush my marksdwarves in the towers.

What is a great way to use obscene amounts of stone, and many workers?

I have been sort of cheating (30 workers with all legendary skills and full stats) to screw, and focus on the militaristic aspects of DF (every immigrant is a soldier).

Now that I've dug out my fortress and completed most of the things that need to be done (food, defense, etc) I'm looking for ways to get rid of all of my surplus stone in an interesting way. I don't want to destroy it, but I'm looking for ideas on what to build with it.

So far this is all I have been able to come up with:
A huge wall. A few tiles high and a few tiles thick, with fortifications and the occasional tower for my all-marksdwarf army to shoot down from.

A flooding and draining system: I have my fort completely walled off with 2 layers of walls. I have been thinking about designing something that would flood the zone between the two walls to drown anything inside, then drain the water back out once everything is dead. If I can get some sort of lava, I would use that instead.

Make a massive statues of something, and maybe a fountain too.

Make a shower for my dwarves (I'll do this anyway, but it doesn't use much stone.)

And that's it.

Please post any ideas you have, no matter how silly. I would prefer something that I can use (so not just stuff that has little purpose).

Thanks!

Thanks for all the help!

Yeah, I do.

What happens if I install it to Program Files?

Also, DF has been crashing recently, so I moved my folder to the desktop.

Will that help?

DF Bug Reports / Save and region files not in data/save
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:18:35 pm »
I usually find them in "Dwarf Fortress/Data/Save/" but right now there is nothing in there besides an empty "current" folder.

I have 2 worlds and a save showing up in my dwarf fortress game, when I click "start playing."

But I can't find anything in the folder where they should be.

Also, was that campfire bug fixed? I think I have crashed a few times from a goblin campfire, but I'm not certain...

"I'll let go when you let go!"
"No, I'll let go when you let go!"
That sounds like a very dwarfy thing to do, assuming alchohol is within reach.

If they don't have beer then they can't do anything for long.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Macedwarves.

My friend told me about one of his only soldiers, who he named "Macedwarf," that ran around with 2 maces in each hand, beating the shit out of every goblin in site.

One time, Macedwarf hit a goblin three screen lengths (not sure what that is in tiles, maybe like 75?) into another crowd of goblins. The crowd got scared and ran away

I still think the best way to fix the sparring annoyances would be to just make sparring dwarves do no damage.
