If they start getting dehydrated, then you have a bug.
I have cut down around 80% of the trees on my map, and I have about 50 out of my 73 dwarves cutting wood, hauling wood, smelting, making coal, or forging.
I wish i had an underground river to make a huge forest.
You see, I started this map and was disappointed to find no marble, which I had previously thought to eb the only flux stone.
SO I'm starting up a big metal operation, when I notice my smelter has the ability to make pig iron bars. Whats this? My whole map is half chalk and half magnetite? And chalk is a flux stone!?
Oh yes, you heard me. I have been making crafts and tables out of flux, apparently.

If you tell me how to check the seed, I can give it to you and try to find the location again. There's 2 waterfalls going into a river than passes through a 4 z level deep cliff. The upper levels are chalk and magnetite with some other stuff thrown in (opal and whatever) and the deeper levels I'm not sure yet.

But seriously, they like to start far away from the big road that took an hour to build, then complain that they didn't have a road. I think thy come from the same place every time though, so I just build to where they started.

After a season, your populace would start to grow extra arms and stuff.
Wait a minute... Thats awesome!
I'll just wall around a large portion of land to grow trees and stuff.
I started a map that has 2 waterfalls going into a deep river, all on a huge plateau. But is the river that has cliffs on both sides a cave river? If I dig in from the side and muddy the area, will tower caps grow?
Of course, the game would need to be fixed to make anything made of wood, cloth, leather, and maybe other stuff burnable, and you would need to have some sort of firefighter job, or have dwarves automatically grab buckets and put fires out.

Thanks for the update.
I've been wondering how many dwarves you need (about) before goblins attack you.
Just import metal, or melt down goblin armor and unusable weapons, I have more ore than I need right now.
Then again, I don't do much with my metal, since I put weapons I don't want in weapon traps rather than make trap components.
It turns out I mixed up marble and chalk.
Chalk was labeled as non-economic, but marble was not.
God damnit, I'm stupid... My first fort was all chalk, so I keep thinking of all white stone as chalk...
Sorry for wasting your time.

My bad. Chalk was the first stone I saw, and I keep linking chalk white white stone.

I will try that again, thank you.
