When I started playing DF I played only with graphics packs. Now that I'm a somewhat experienced player, I play only with graphics packs.

The way the game is meant to be played is decided by whoever plays it. The ability to change and add to games to make it suit your own preferences is the main reason I prefer PC gaming over console gaming (though I do both).

Though if the necromancers leave, the undead aren't too hard to deal with.
Necromancers don't always show up as "tower" in the neighbours list. They can simply be listed as "town".

Limiting the entrance to your corpse pile should force the necromancer to seek it out so you can spot or trap them.

I vastly prefer playing with a graphical tileset, and just get really annoyed if people say that's somehow the wrong way to play it.

I don't really see a problem with trying to promote the default tileset, though. Just try to focus on why you like it rather than why you dislike the others.

A puggle sounds like something that would be closely related to a fluffy wambler. Reminds me of the first time I saw a caged Drake in a merchant caravan and thought I'd be able to buy a small dragon-ish creature. Nope. Turns out drake is the term for male ducks.

Then I installed Masterwork, and figured the flock of drakes that wandered onto the map would be easy practice for my fledgling militia...
"Wait, that duck's image looks more like a small dragon..."

Seems attachment is from time spent with the weapon, while naming happens based on number of kills.

I usually have a main entrance with a drawbridge and a narrow back entrance full of traps. I like putting the trap corridor on the side of a cliff, so invaders dodging the traps take a dive, preferably into lava. As I become more confident in my small militia I'll slowly start sending them out earlier rather than just use them to mop up the few enemies that make it through the traps.

I tend to get dwarves with preexisting conditions (insanity, missing limbs, etc) when they're coming from a fort I recently abandoned. One military dwarf went berserk as soon as he entered the map, and slaughtered all the other immigrants as well as a good chunk of my military.

I tend to just assume every caravan visit also brings an ambush :)

Though if I manage to get a surplus of animals I set up scattered pastured around the map to increase the odds of early detection.

I also tend to play defensively; I usually dig a moat around the entrace with a drawbridge for the caravans, and a heavily trapped back entrance for anyone who gets caught outside.

Werebeasts can be quite scary if their timing is good. Once had one arrive at the same time as a caravan. Ended up multiplying fast and killing the fort.
