Dear boss,

If you don't want me trying to haul things, why haven't you taken hauling off of my 'to do' list?

Dental surgery tomorrow.

Though I have complete confidence in the professionalism of the various members of the team performing the operation, the sheer number of safeguards in place against disaster are a source of grave concern for me.

Nothing quite as reassuring as having to go to a hospital for a procedure that's usually performed on an out-patient basis, simply because my immune system hates my pancreas.

Argh.

General Discussion / Re: [insert gender-related title here!]
« on: May 15, 2014, 09:03:50 am »
Wow, 6 pages in, and nobody has yet mentioned that what's being argued here is sex, and not gender?

'Gender' is a linguistic term, applicable to many (predominately Latin-derived) languages which differentiate nouns into feminine/masculine/neutral.

'Sex' relates to one's genitalia, and hormonal balance, as well as identification with such.

The divide between the usage of these terms seems (caveat: seems) to closely follow the type of education the speaker has; the 'soft' (read: NON) sciences are much more likely to confuse the two, whenever and wherever it's politically expedient.

Spoiler: potential triggers? (click to show/hide)

I tend to only name my legendary dwarves, and base them on whatever theme is in mind when the first one gets there.

Lately, it's been various ancient pantheons - Hammerlord captain is Thor, Leg. Furnace Op is Hephaestus, top hunter is Diana, etc.

Generally, though, I find it sufficient to name professions for everyone else.  Except my squaddies, who tend to be 'Fodder.'

Thank you for the link.  Following this link was also quite informative; it's refreshing to see the BBC taking such a neutral, factual reporting stance.  Not that they don't as a rule or anything; I'm just accustomed to the heavily-slanted NA style of journalism, I guess.

Is there anyone reading this who lives in Caracas, or has friends/family there?  Does anyone know the story on the ground, as it were?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Where do the keas go?

Do we actually know for sure that armok is not a kea?

Possibly the most terrifying concept in the history of ever.  Well done, sir or madam - I predict my day will be filled with cold sweats from here on in.

Basically, what the Subject line says.

Here in Canada, I hear plenty of news concerning the current diplomatic travesty that is the Ukraine/Crimea (rebellion? invasion? posturing?  Depends who's reporting), but nothing about Venezuela.  In fact, if it weren't for a favourite science-based YouTube channel doing a short video on the subject, I'd probably not have heard that there was anything happening there at all.

Hopefully, my fellow forumites are more in the loop.

Please, folks, let's not let this devolve into an argument about political ideologies.  As Columbo would say, 'just the facts, ma'am.'

Links to news reports would be most appreciated.  Direct accounts from Venezuelans would be even more appreciated.

Oh my god Woobmonkey is alive?!

Yes, yes indeed.  And, for that matter, requesting a new Dorf, if I may.

WoobMonkey II (the absentee) at your service!  Perhaps, in the ultimate wisdom of the hive-mind, I could take the reins of command sometime?

P.S. Larix, I'd like to extend a special 'thank you' to you, for stepping up and keeping this thing going.  You are truly a Dwarf among Kobolds.

m-logik, you may have already tried this, but:

Perhaps you could break up the log-jam by setting up a general furniture stockpile, linking it to <g>ive to your mechanism-only pile?

I wouldn't have btiten his head off if he hadn't condescendingly ended every post with "Lol, since you must be a boring, unimaginative dumb person, just go play the Sims"

Except that that never happened.  I did, however, suggest a few other challenging games along the lines of DF (whether as roguelikes, or as difficult city-builders), which require no backstory to be internally consistent.

Oh well.

This is a masterwork engraving by Urist McPhilosopher.  On the engraving is a picture of a right-angle triangle, the symbol of The Pythagorean Chasms, a local Dwarven government.  Engraved is a picture of the dwarf Urist McSpinoza.  The dwarf Urist McSpinoza is surrounded by cheese.  The cheese is broken into monads. This picture relates to the nomination of Urist McSpinoza to the post of Official Thinker of The Pythagorean Chasms.  Engraved is a picture of Fath McNietzsche and dwarves.  The dwarves are cowering.  Fath McNietzsche is pontificating.  This picture relates to the prophecy of the UberDorf, related in the year 298.  Engraved is a picture of a cheese surrounded by abstract epiphenomena.  The picture relates to the publication of the book All Mind Is Merely Cheese by the dwarf Dennett McUberrealist in the year 476.

WWUD if offered correspondance courses in Goblin as a Second Language?
