On the next update, I'll see what I can do.  I've never used StoneSense before; I guess this would be as good a time as any to learn how!

PTW, with great anticipation.

Groovy stuff, flatlander!

I re-watched it, and it seems fine to me.  Perhaps a visit to the opthamologist is in order?  XD

Dear Urist McDwarfentrader:

I appreciate your eagerness to bring the goods I requested to our humble fort.  It never fails to amaze me, how you go out of your way to supply us with the logs, cloth, and coal we so deperately need.

However, may I offer the humble suggestion that next time you come, you allow the Human caravan the time to pack up and leave, before blocking off the entrance to our Depot?  Though I know you'll blame us for it, I'd like to remind you that your scuttled wagons, and the goods they left for us, is your own damned fault.

Sincerely, Baron WoobMonkey of WoodWalls.

Update, 5th Year (or, the beginning of the end?):

First, some news:

Yay!  Naturally, I nominated myself.  After all, I can't allow any of my subordinates to get too uppity now, can I?

Spoiler: State of the Fortress (click to show/hide)

There are only a few things that have me worried, at the moment: our lack of wood is a major bottleneck in all production, from barrels for prepared meals, to charcoal to run the smelter.  Also, if the next siege comes on Giant Bats, we'll likely be in for a world of hurt.  Oh well; such is the danger of being a Dwarf.

This challenge has proven to be more fun than even I anticipated.  It's amazing how many habits I've had to shed, just to keep things from spiraling out of control.

And the bridge *still* has yet to be necessary.

Is there a way to make dwarves use wheelbarrows when carrying stone to where they're going to build a floor? I'm careful to use the closest rocks/rock blocks, but it still takes FOREVER.

Sort of.  You could set up a couple stone stockpiles directly beside, or very near to, where you plan to construct your flooring.  If you aim for multiple small 'piles, as opposed to one large one, you can get many, many beards pushing wheelbarrows full of the rocks you need.  Another potential upside to this is being able to specify exactly which types of stone you want to have nearby, if you're all design-y like that.

Gotcha.  Guess I'll just have to look at it again later.  Oh, the torture!

Not uploading in HD anymore?  Gotta ask, because it's very hard to read anything on screen in 360p.

Still less stupid than what Humans do.
It's burning off a fuel of some sort, which would not harm your clothes or body when put out in a reasonable time. My high school chemistry teacher did this with our first class tests, too - lit them on fire pretending to be outraged, then passed them back to us unharmed.

It's not the fire part that's stupid - that's actually pretty awesome, and would belong at any great power-metal concert.  It's the woo-woo claims of health benefits that I was referring to.

Glad to have been a part of your growth as an architect, albeit in a small way!

No pressure on updates, or the contents thereof: that's the advantage of playing a simultaneous embark, as opposed to a succession fort.  There's nobody behind you in line; there are no turns to skip.

As to StoneSense pictures, and the like - I say, the more the merrier!  There is, to repeat, only one rule for this thread - never break the earth.  How you choose to go about it, is up to you.  How you choose to report it, is up to you.  If you'd prefer to play out 20 years, and only post a single sentence, with only one picture - that's cool.  If you'd rather play only a single season at a time, and post a 1500-word essay, replete with illustrative pictures, and translated into Dwarfen - that's cool, too!

I've been failing at this game do hard lately. I recently lost a siege because I messed up uniforms and ordered all my dwarves to charge into the fight naked. However, after this experiance, I noticed that a naked military  can actually kill a few enemies before it goes down, as long as they are at least wielding weapons. It looks like that if they were trained better, they would have maybe won the fight. So, this caused me to come up with a dwarfy challenge to spice up DF gameplay.

Rules:

*Draft every dorf in the military, and give them a naked uniform. Weapons, quivers, and backpacks are allowed.
*No drawbridges or traps are allowed. When an enemy comes up, you have to fight them with your dorfsand their animals only.
*No exploits. (I.e. danger rooms)

I'm going to post about my first attempt at this in a little bit...

If you u/l an embark save to DFFD, this could make for a great community challenge fort.  Dorfs may hate being naked, but

HEY!  THAT'S A SPECTACULAR TABLE!!!!!

(there are ways to cope, is what I'm saying.  Seeing how each individual player does so could be a laugh riot.)

What I find odd about this whole thread is that, really, we can and do all understand what each tileset (or lack thereof) represents.

I've run a few threads, now, which have had a wide sampling of different tilesets used, varying from player to player.  Not once has anyone complained, or shown any difficulty whatsoever in understanding what's going on.

When one player prefers, say, SpaceFox, they just update the RAWs to reflect that.  With LNP (which, I'd wager pounds to pennies, a vast majority of players use), it's as simple as clicking a choice from a list, and then a button.  In my current thread, I started the embark with Phoebus.  One player prefers ASCII, and posted pics in that format instead.  Exactly nobody was confused.

Why is it okay to mod the hell out of everything *except* the graphics used?  Whenever a new race/critter/plant is modded in, it requires a symbol to be added - yet, nobody complains.

Is this forum truly so full of fuddy-duddies as to think that others shouldn't have a voice, simply because they have an accent?  Sure, sometimes a certain sprite may require some clarification; so what?  Sometimes a certain sentence, spoken through a thick accent, does as well.  Are we truly so arrogant as to expect an immigrant from a non-English speaking country to have perfect pronunciation and diction, as well?

DF already has enough hurdles to jump, when it comes to growing the fanbase.  How is limiting options for players helping with that in any what whatsoever?

If anyone wants to get so purist as to actively attempt to deny players from posting in whatever danged tileset they prefer, they'd best delete DFHack, Dwarf Therapist, Stonesense, Soundsense, LNP, and any other 3rd-party add-ons, mods, or other tools from their own HDDs.  To do less that that is hypocritical in the extreme.  After all, having DFHack fix the massive bugs in the program is exactly as non-vanilla as using Mayday's tileset to be able to understand what you're seeing while you play.

Okay, guys, I have an ethical question:

This summer, we had a pair of ambushes while the Human caravan was visiting, delaying trade.  They didn't leave until after the Dwarfs showed up (with 5 wagonsful of goods!).  Now, the Dwarf caravan isn't unloading properly, making trade impossible.

The question - should I call it a write-off, or deconstruct the depot?  All I really need is some logs, stones, and cloth - so on the one hand, it seems excessive; on the other hand, I really need those logs and cloth bins!

Edit: nevermind.  I deconstructed the walls around the Depot, in hopes that that would allow the Humans and Dwarfs to bypass one another; instead, their wagons just scuttled.  Sigh.  We're going to be hauling for the next 6 months, now.

sal, I really like the layout you've chosen for your fortress.  The centralized dining area must be pretty convenient; not only can everydorf access it easily, it's good and close to the Depot for when your broker takes hir leisurely time doing hir job!

So, do you intend to expand vertically, horizontally, or some mixture of the two?
