DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Graphics, need your opinions
« on: May 20, 2014, 12:53:38 pm »
ancistrus, if I may hazard a suggestion:

It's probably best to focus on the sheer ingenuity of DF, its players, and its community.  Whether that be stressed through the amazing simulation that ToadyOne has put together, the astounding expansions and mods cobbled up by folks like Meph and Deon, the torture of physics and logic that folks like Girlinhat and Larix have given us, or the graphics packs designed and created by various others, doesn't really matter.  The point of DF, I think needs to be stressed, is that it's akin to the most intricate Meccano set ever created - any time one finds oneself thinking 'I wish there were a way to. . .. ' it's likely that there is.

Even if you don't prefer graphics and tilesets, the very fact that DF can be (relatively) easily modified to allow them, should be an overall positive, don't you think?

Otherwise, we may as well move on to telling F1 drivers that the only way to manipulate a gearbox is through a stick-shift; any ease-of-use they find with paddles is somehow inferior.  Or whatever analogy you may prefer.

I think we're all (at least I know that I am) willing to assume that you mean only the best; this, however, is probably not a fruitful way to go about easing newer players into the game.

I've tried nearly every tileset out there, at some point or another.  Yes, that includes the default ASCII.

That said, I find myself using Phoebus or Obsidian as my default go-tos.  Probably because, as a new player, I learned a great deal from watching YTube LPs - and most players were/are using Phoebus or Ironhand.

I'm not sure that standing in the middle of the street, yelling 'get a horse!' at passing motorists, would be all that productive.  What may be better, and still acheive your aims, is to write a piece on why you, personally, love the basic ASCII tileset, and how you, personally, find it superior to other options.

Instead of telling others how they ought to play with their toys, why not tell them how you play with yours?  If others agree with your point of view, or see inspiration in it, they're likely to try it out.  If not, you still just come off as a DF fan, instead of another would-be internet dictator.

My pennies, for what they're worth.

They're.... cooking the "frozen milk lumps" into food?  Minced frozen milk everywhere.  I can't imagine milk-flavored shaved ice is too tasty, but these are dwarves, afterall, they eat FAR worse.

[shameless plug]

You might like to watch this thread.

Not only are my personal (and somewhat uninspired, tbh) designs there - there are others working their magic on the same embark, with pictures and stories to come!

Update - Spring, 4th Year of Construction:

****Many Pictures - you may wish to only de-spoil one set at a time****

Spoiler: It Begins! (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Individuals of Note (click to show/hide)

So far, we're thriving.  We've grown from a Hamlet to a Town this year; elected a mayor (whom I immediately replace, as Dwarfs don't do democracy); survived a Cyclops, 2 Ambushes, and a tiny Siege (seriously, Goblins - 15 barely-trained Macemen aren't going to do you much good 'round here!).  We've deforested all of the map, and now spend our time training, and waiting...

(Note: the Aqueduct project is still being built; no pictures until it's ready, though!)

Can I be dorfed as a parent of the liberated kidnapped dorf child.

Done and done.  By odd coincidence, it turns out that you're married to cahocachi.  May your love be eternal; or at least stronger than your child-minding skills.

I'll snag Grombardrim, I guess.  Female Marksdwarf, as seems to be the trend :P

By the time you posted this, Grombardrim was already our broker.  As consolation, you should be pleased to note that you're a Legendary Appraiser.

...Maybe I should get a doctor to check up on the little guy, see what's happening in there.

Yes, yes you should.  Is it fair to presume that you're young?  As you get older, your kidney(s) become much, much more vital to your overall well-being.  Please do take care of your endocrine system; the longer you put it off, the higher the likelihood of very painful consequences.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Tips for starting in an evil region
« on: May 19, 2014, 10:16:37 pm »
For evil regions, bring the absolute minimum amount of goods you think you'll need.  Don't pasture your animals; instead, dig out a small place and set it as a meeting area.  Your critters will wander to it on their own, saving you the excess hauling jobs.

In any biome with dangerous fog/rain/soot, or with reanimation, you're usually going to be better off abandoning the surface altogether until you can set up a secure, airlocked, entryway.  Get your wood from the first cavern layer, instead - trolls are nasty, but not as bad as Giant Raven Corpses, Husks, and the like.

I never take any military or gear for them; by the time my squaddie(s) can think to grab their equipment, they're generally already being scared off by whatever nasties are lurking in the neighbourhood.  Plus, military Dorfs don't know how to retreat once activated - you're likely to find that that steel mail and axe you brought are only serving to make for one very well-equipped zombie extra to fight.

Hide.  Turtle up; secure some cavern space.  Be prepared to go without traders or migrants for a year or two, until you can reclaim some surface safely.

Somewhat counter-intuitively, tundra/glacier embarks can be far easier than temperate woodlands, when dealing with Terrifying conditions.  Yetis come alone; Giant Badger Corpses come in packs.

I highly recommend looking up the various Single-Pick Challenge threads, or the corresponding YTube videos, to get a good feel for how to survive the first few seasons.

Playing through year 4 of this challenge fort, and a Cyclops arrives on the edge of the map.  My squad of 8 well-trained, but untested, melee fighters rush out, and I hold my breath in trepidation.

20 seconds, and 3 pages of combat reports later, my crew is kicking back for a drink, and a peasant is off to haul away the giant corpse of my fallen foe.  Not a scratch on any of my beards, to boot.

Some days, it's good to be a Dorf.

They heard your Dorfettes crying out for the D.

How is it that Dwarfs can build entire-embark-wide floors in the sky, without any scaffolding, supported only by a single block's connection to a solid construction?

Spring, 3rd Year:

Spoiler: Status Screen (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Stocks (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: Animals (click to show/hide)

All in all, a rather uneventful year.  Our population is slowly, but steadily, growing.  Our militia is now made up of 8 Dwarfs, all of whom have full leather gear, and most of whom are outfitted with basic steel and bismuth bronze equipment as well.

Construction continues on the aquaduct project; not enough headway has been made to be worth screenshots, as of yet.  We've also planned out the construction of a separate apartment block; none of it is yet built, though.

The second storey of the main compound has been completely floored off, and the walls are finished.  Next will come the roof, and possibly a sniper outpost or two.

For security, we've built a drawbridge at the entrance to the compound, and made copper mechanism linkanges to a lever in our meager dining space.  Stockpiles are finally being sorted out, with 2 minecart QSPs in place - one for lumber, and the other for furniture and ammo.  By this time next year, our workspace ought to be in order, provided nothing disastrous happens.

Next update should be chock-full of pretty pictures; this year, there's just not much worth showing as of yet.
Sorry for the...well...total lack of updates :D School's keeping me busy as hell and i didnt even made it to summer yet :D But im happy that this boat is afloat and that more and more people are joining.

No worries - class is, of course, much more important.  There is no time limit - feel free to update whenever is most convenient for you.

P.S. - There are still plenty of Dorfs available for naming, should anyone wish to have a representative in this fortress.

 There are good reasons.

Why don't dwarves play any organized sports?

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

Does anyone know whether there will be any future use for barrels of blood, ichor, 'liquid,' and the like, that are available from caravans?

It would be pretty awesome to be able to give vampires an alternate, non-dwarf, food source.  Or at least to cook up some blood puddings and the like.
