if you want to keep personal pets from entering when their masters enter, you may need to keep the door tightly closed (I think it's "o" that keep animals from being able to open the door themselves)

built a well directly over a built reservoir... and forgot about water pressure....

now water is spilling into my fortress and everyone is cancelling work because they're afraid of getting their feet wet...

I found my fisherdwarves catching pond turtles out of the town well... not sure how to feel about that...

Also caught a giant cave swallow, another bird on this bird-laden fortress... I also have no idea what to do with broad beans, they grow on the island but apparently aren't food and can't be used in any way... considering making an item tumbler just to get use out of them...

In the meantime, my fortress' conspiracy to keep quarry bush leaves off the menu continues as the cavern we found did not have any cave moss or dwarven crop plants...

I think the reason danger rooms work is that wooden weapons have no power to get through armor...

I don't think it would work on unarmored animals, even war dogs get minced in the traps. However, I may be wrong, so someone test it and find the results, I don't think my army of emus is hardy enough for war... or !!SCIENCE!! of this calibur

Dwarves don't believe in the underhanded tactics a knife encourages, just as they don't think it's fair to other civilizations to craft whips or scourges. The goblins and humans have no such inhibitions however, and will gladly make all of the above and perhaps sell them/die and leave them behind to less stubborn dwarves...

If you're not doing any farming at all, you may as well set all plant seeds to be cooked as well, since you won't be planting them...

Be sure to post the results here after you've been playing the place for a year or so to tell us what's going on, I'm quite curious at this point

Most civilizations do not approve of such time wasting, so the only scholars in the land that aren't keeping records have to abandon society and make friends with the dead because nobody likes them. [Most people probably don't read the entire thread, so it shouldn't matter too much]

Goblins and dwarves have a very complex relationship. Goblins steal dwarven children to raise as their own, dwarves kill goblins by the dozen on the battlefield, and goblins willingly dive into corridors filled with traps to kill even a single animal held by a dwarven civilization.

However, dwarven culture can respect a go-getter attitude, to the point that even a goblin can make a place for themself in dwarven society, and dwarves often end up being the most powerful units of their squads in goblin military. They also share features such as short tempers (according to people who have modded the game to play as goblins) and a love of destroying things when they get angry.

Clearly the relationship between these races is a strange one, and it only gets more complex as time moves on...

Corpses and body parts outdoors in a refuse pit will decay within a year, although I suppose at 10 fps that could be a long time.  In addition to cutting down on animal populations, I find a major improvement from getting rid of all the old clothes, by selling them to a caravan. 

I wasn't quite sure if they decayed or not... Obviously I just kill too many goblins for my own good :/ I always sell off the old clothes. How else would I buy out caravans?
Yeah... might want to stop doing that, just offer (o) the clothes to the merchants to get them out of the way rather than buying all the useless crap they decide to bring you, unless they bring resources you really want... in fact, you may want to just dump more stuff on them if you are losing fps because of it...
