DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?

The fortress of Bigbell now has more radishes than dwarves. It is only a matter of time until they take over.

I have a trade depot left out in front of the outer gate, because the traders can sit in the rain for all I care. Next to the depot is a refuse stockpile and corpse stockpile, because I like to welcome migrants with a look at their future in the fortress, followed by a bridge as the gate in case things get hairy. The walls are one z level high and topped with fortifications to allow crossbow dwarves to shoot at invaders.

There is typically a statue or two next to the gate on the inside, and two weapon traps on the outside surrounded by blood and body parts from those two goblins who tried to sneak in...

Actually, the fact that those migrant waves were so small makes more sense now...

I'd suggest embarking on an island with no goblin civs nearby (ideally untamed wilds), I've found you never get invaded there, except for the occasional werebeast or semi-megabeast/megabeast/titan/forgotten beast.

Also, if you want extra fun, try to trap and tame the local beasts for defense instead of building a military, or go full savage and limit yourself to stone and wood weapons and leather armor

Also, no gobbo jerky I'm afraid, even though calling goblins "intelligent" creatures is debatable, dwarves still refuse to butcher them...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Will dwarves and animals die from the age
« on: September 03, 2014, 11:27:29 am »
They start having a chance to die once they hit the maxage range.
No they don't - their "death age" is determined when they are born (or, in the case of animals, when they arrive at your fortress), and they will predictably die once they reach that exact age. This is why it's not possible to do short-term savescumming to make things live longer (you can only do it long-term, which is rather impractical unless you use DFHack to query the creature's death age).
"Urist McGuardsman has three days til retirement!"
*Only two days left on life timer*
"Guess who's going to solo the goblins?"

Though they will die of old age, most players get them killed before they have a chance to...

So far, out of the 10 or so fortresses I've run, I have only lost a single cavy to old age...

Start building early in case you have some problems with wildlife or an early siege/ambush, get to a full squad by the time you have 70 citizens, and keep enough weapons on hand to arm a few civvies if things start to go downhill and you can't use your super squad for whatever reason

Have you checked on your animals lately? You may need to slaughter some if they're getting too populous and dragging down your FPS...

and if items are the problem, perhaps you should forbid some so they won't be considered usable material

Clearly Ast Starlashes and Amxu Terrorspited had a bag that was torn on the side, and they kept throwing over each other like a blanket. Then Dang Spiderstop kidnapped about 6 people with similar names. Then three of them escaped and got captured again...

Clearly the liaison was having trouble reiterating this epic tale to you in a coherent manner, so he just said each individual kidnapping...

A lasher is sparring with an axedwarf... how exactly do you "gently tap" someone with a copper whip?

Capturing a whole bunch of emus on the island my base is on. Also breached the cavern and captured a whole bunch of elk birds.

Clearly my fortress is meant to become an egg empire... better get started on more nest boxes

In 40.10, it seems like archers fire at a more reasonable rate than the machine gun crossbows that they were before... they still fire faster than a human would historically be able to fire a crossbow, but having a two minute reload for every shot of a crossbow would make them rather unwieldy for militias...

Or you know, like ice climbing... Just dig out your holds as you go
Ice is a bit more solid, and usually you'd have picks.

Dwarves always have small picks hidden away somewhere just for that though.
Their fingernails are actually shaped like tiny picks, did you think they were smoothing stone with their toes?

I actually had a dwarf cross a river like this, though it was less wall running and more haphazardly splashing through and immediately climbing a tree on the other side...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: body part butchering

Butchering seems pretty hit or miss on my fortresses, sometimes they just decide animal corpses and body parts should be left to rot instead of butchered...

I haven't even played this version, but surely if you built the pit with an overhang it would be pretty hard to escape from. In other words, not a straight pit, but a chamber with a hole in the ceiling. Or am I misunderstanding the problem?
No, the issue is that the prisoner will escape before they're dropped in the pit for some reason, presumably by punching the dwarf that is leading them to their new prison and making a run for it, possibly killing several other dwarves and at the very least scaring the socks off your entire populace...

Last I checked, there's also a bug where the dwarf who is leading the goblin is treated like an enemy of the fortress, I guess the military thinks he/she did it on purpose

A Troll caught in a cage from the cavern was pastured directly on top of a weapon trap, and was immediately hit with 10 green glass trap components, brutally killing it...
