Nil Duknebel, Expedition leader: Well... We're alive. Somehow we managed to survive the flight across the sky onto an island crossing hundreds of tiles

There seem to be plenty of pools of water, but they are murky and will most likely get the other dwarves sick... Water systems will be needed in case, Armok forbid, the alcohol runs dry.
Well, better get these slackers busy before they drink up all our supplies.
I could've sworn we had more dwarves when we were launched...

Ah, what a lovely site for embarkation, we have metal, clay, even flux stone!

Salt water? meh, we'll deal with it when we get there... Of course, now we just have to figure out how to get there...

Oh dear, perhaps there's another wAAAAAAYYY!!!!!

Elsewhere...
The small elven child had asked her uncle Grunwald why there were so many children that looked different than their caretakers in the fortress, and he always answered the same way, "Your parents neglected you, so we took you all in." He was always willing to answer, though he never got any more specific, such as why his skin was green while hers was the color of wood, or why some of the children had full beards, but he was the only caretaker she'd had since she was a little baby. He pointed up at the sky, "Is that the dwarven Santa, coming to deliver goodies to all the little children?"

The cart seemed to be plummeting toward the island on the horizon, just out of reach. Uncle Grunwald lost interest and wandered off, but the elf child wondered what adventures Santa's dwarves were having...

I'm not sure how fertilizing works, but is it possible that the ground won't grow anything if it hasn't been fertilized?
Maybe you need to process the plants in some way to get the seeds out?

You don't need nighttime when you live in caves.

Why is slade so heavy?
It's made of demon tears, infamous for being obscenely heavy
How many dwarf hours does it take to build a lightbulb?

I'm almost certain that once a tile has been exposed to the surface it's considered above ground forever more.  Building over it doesn't change it back.  In fact, I think you can get away with building metal flooring over it and still grow above ground crops in it.

I believe using glass will cause the game to treat the tiles as lit for purposes of cave adaptation however.  I haven't tested that and it's been many months since I've read about anyone trying it.

I've done this recently.  I can confirm that clear glass flooring does render the area below it as lit.  I'd assume green glass would do the same, but I didn't try that route.
Times like this, I wish Dwarves got vertigo, it would be tons of fun to build a glass floor over a 30 z-level drop and send nobles in to pass out repeatedly

Dwarves waste a lot of giant leather
How do dwarves lock doors when nobody is anywhere nearby?

Fortresses aren't built to keep invaders out. THEY'RE BUILT TO KEEP DWARVES IN.
Does that mean the goblins are actually hired mercenaries meant to patrol outside the fortress and keep the inmates from escaping? It would also explain why they are trying to get the children away from their criminal parents...

So apparently you are now your own worst enemy. This is pretty much as bad as a loyalty cascade.

Question: If gobbos you bred attack invading gobbos, would they suffer a loyalty cascade?
Goblins have weird politics, I don't know if they have any loyalty TO cascade...

if you were a dwarf goblin wouldn't you take your enemies children and treat them like animals? break there will to the point they will mindlessly attack even their own kind? I think that's more dwarfy gobliny than just changing a few things about dogs, because even then they wouldn't be invading you, which is kind of my point, using the invaders against themselves in an ironic sense of dwarvenly gobliny payback.
I fixed it for you

maybe goblins are only so driven to war with dwarves due to such horrid violations of the geneva convention...
I will continue to assert that it is a perfectly legitimate tactic to drown invaders in the blood and vomit of their predecessors so long as the supply stays

Hmm.... Are punches blunt attacks? If they are, the helmet wouldn't protect against them very much... in fact, if there's not a decent protective value, you may have been better off sending your dwarf in naked, at least they'd have a decent dodge chance...

I got started without video guides, but I did use one with the LAzy newb pack (though I probably could've figured it out on my own), I assume furnaces and forges includes all of them, but there should be at least a basic guide to weapons and hunting, since those become very relevant for simple [trapavoid] creature countermeasures, especially against forgotten beasts

In any case, having a rotting baby in your caves is not good, you should place a garbage dump outside and place a dump order on the corpse, that'll at least stop the miasma

Ah, I see, the Goblin must've gotten a lucky punch through the eye holes with his tiny fists and punched through the dorf's facebone. You just have to remember that a random number generator is behind the combat, so these things do happen sometimes
