DF Gameplay Questions / 39d - Strange mood change for furnace operators?
« on: August 05, 2008, 09:36:44 am »
I have a legendary furnace operator in 39d that I occasionally tapped to produce silver training weaponry who went into a secretive mood.  At the time of his strange mood he was legendary furnace operator, dabbling weaponsmith.  His mood produced a bronze short sword, and how he's a legendary weaponsmith!

Wasn't furnace operation one of the qualified strange mood professions in 38g?  That's how the wiki reads in any event.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ferengi-esque traders
« on: August 04, 2008, 08:59:07 pm »
So after successfully fending off my first two ambushes the caravan shows up.  On the first screen I see ≡<<-cave spider silk rope->>≡ and decide its worth a look for the upcoming jail.  "...It is studded with superior quality Brass and decorated with superior quality black bear leather....On the item is an exceptionally designed image of Flayerdepress the Steel short sword in Morion"

This would be the short sword recently made by my fey weaponsmith.  So of course I had to buy it, even at ☼900☼ - it's only two (narrow giant cave spider silk shirt)s after all.

So next year (and another 3 ambushes) rolls around.  I'm busily trading stacks of narrow clothing for metal bars, food, and meltable trinkets.  Near the bottom I see *<<-Tin bracelet->>* for 3370!  And its description: "...It is encircled with bands of finely-crafted Star sapphire.  On the item is a superiorly designed image of Flayerdepress the Steel short sword in Pig Tail".

Yeesh - I guess the traders are smelling a sucker eh?  Well luckily one of the ambushes was the goblin wrestling squad - and they wore silk almost exclusively.  Except for the cheap (human leather earring). on one of them.

DF Suggestions / A workaround for littered clothing
« on: August 03, 2008, 10:43:34 am »
When changing into armor, and occasionally when wrestling military dwarves leave their clothing lying about.  Since these are owned items they cannot be stockpiled/moved/dumped, and the clutter accumulates over time.

I propose a workaround for the problem.  When the seasons change check for owned items not held/worn and not in an owned room/container within the room.  Generate "store item in cabinet" hauling jobs as part of seasonal cleaning.

DF Bug Reports / Elite Wrestler won't gain hammerdwarf skill (39d)
« on: August 02, 2008, 09:09:37 pm »
I like to make my military triple threats.  To do this I train as follows:

recruits - spar unarmed
wrestlers - spar with hammer
hammerdwarves - crossbow target practice
marksdwarves - spar unarmed

Whenever I get a notice that "Rith McUrnst has become a Xxxxxx" I swap his equipment over, and check the rest to see if I missed any.

This way they are always working on their worst skill. When my first wrestler (and unit commander) went elite, I thought it was odd that while he was "great" in wrestling he was only a (noname) hammerdwarf.  So I placed him on hammer sparring duty, and confirmed that he had a Silver Warhammer in inventory.  After producing two more elite wrestlers, my first one went Champion.  He's now a legendary wrestler, but still a (noname) Hammerdwarf, and he still has a Silver War hammer in his right hand.

Also - when set to use crossbows, elite wrestlers grab them but seem to continue sparring.  This may be related to bug #000528

DF General Discussion / Magma Votive (non game related)
« on: July 31, 2008, 06:14:09 pm »
I saw this in a catalog and thought hmmm...looks like something made by a possessed craftsdwarf who was impatient with waiting for the magma to harden into obsidian.  Or possibly mandated by a noble who liked fire imps, or a player who decided to mod in flaming craft goods - just to see what would happen when the elf trader accepted an !!Obsidian Votive!! and then left with a pack of useless wooden goods.  Just be sure to bring it to the trade depot in an Iron bin...

Technically it's made of glazed dolomite not obsidian but IMHO that's a minor point.

DF Bug Reports / 39c/d Sun berry irregularity
« on: July 27, 2008, 01:20:42 pm »
After purchasing a bag of sun berry seeds I was unable to plant them for 2 years, until the caravan showed up again with sun berry fruit.  The world was created in 39c, and subsequently upgraded to 39d.  I have before and after saves (small region, aprox 2MB each) if they would be useful.

edit: another oddity - whip vine planting was also turned on, even though I have no whip vine seeds.  However the caravan did bring a bag of whip vine flour.

DF Gameplay Questions / No more sunshine?
« on: July 21, 2008, 07:54:52 pm »
I'm set up in a nice temperate 39c embark area (6x5 with magma, trees, soil, sand, iron, flux, chasm, HFS, underground waterfall - all the conveniences).  The treehugger caravan arrived and wonder of wonders they brought a bag of sunberry seeds!  After parting with a few alunite mugs I greedily begin setting up my booze-berry farm - or so I thought.  I couldn't plant them!  My surface plot can grow hide root, blade weed, rope reed, fisher berries, rat weed, wild strawberries and prickle berries but not sunberries.  In prior versions whenever I lucked into elves with sunberry seeds I was able to plant them, but alas not now.

I note in the wiki that sunberries are good-aligned plants.  So was I simply lucky to be in good-aligned areas in my prior forts or is the alignment restriction now being enforced?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Gear and Henchmen questions
« on: November 23, 2007, 03:45:00 pm »
After the mayor sent me out to dispose of a zombie spearmaster I rounded up all the drunks in the area in preparation for my quest.  We were successful but one of the drunks had his hand removed before we were able to dispatch the spearmaster.  While I do admire his stamina at being willing to go on despite his, erm, handicap I'm unable to get a local swordsman to join up with me while he remains in my party.  How can I convince him that he should retire?  I considered letting him charge the next enemy on his own then running back to town, but that seems a cowardly way out of the matter.

And on that subject - at the last ruin my henchmen ran off to engage zombies.  I could hear the sounds of battle but it was night, so I was unable to see where it occured.  Is there any way to determine in which direction an ongoing battle lies?

How does encumberance work?  Is there some trigger point over which I should stop looting and run back to town to sell or does the weight gradually slow you down as you acquire more?

When searching ruins I often come across extra clothing - most of it seems  to be ornamental in nature but I wonder - would it be better to try to wear all of it or just stuff it in my pack?  How does one pick out the proper menacing spiked pendant or earrings to go with chain mail?

I searched and found a discussion of how to rank quality and wear here: http://www.bay12games.com/cgi-local/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000096  But I do have a followup question - can worn/damaged items be repaired?  If so where/how?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Good dog!
« on: January 06, 2008, 02:44:00 pm »
This dog really hates kobolds.  Most war dogs would be satisfied with ripping off a limb and finishing the kobold off after it passed out.  Not this one - he ripped a leg off just so he could get at both arms at once - to bite them off while the thief was still conscious.

6 days in jail for an overdue book

Luckily there was a cell available so she didn't get a hammering...

After having no luck finding a good site using seed 2008, I tried 2007, and came up with several.  All sites below have surface water, trees, iron, magma, access to all civs, chasm, and HIDDEN FUN STUFF unless otherwise noted. Coordinates given are from Regional Prospector

Near misses:
            24,173 3x5 region (no sand)

            96,113 3x6 region (no sand)

125,100 5x5 region (limestone, obsidian and bauxite but no chasm)

And two sites of excellence:

32,98 sinister surroundings, hematite, sand, surface water (if you are dwarf enough to drink from the crocodile's pool), a large chasm, and an underground river with waterfall.  No skeletal elks, but perhaps I could interest you in zombie goats?  No flux, but you did say you wanted a challenge right?

124, 96 3x7 region, or even 2x7 sand, a river that starts above ground and dives below ground, limestone, magnetite, a long chasm and lots of obsidian.

edit: 124, 96 is slightly bugged.  This map is mostly over the treeline so with a 2x7 or 3x7 you need to get lucky and be placed in the NW corner to be below the treeline.  If you go 4x7 you can choose biome F2 (forest) to increase your chances of embarking below the treeline.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / sugar buzz?
« on: December 08, 2007, 02:35:00 pm »
The sweet pod harvest was successful, and we were blessed with an abundance of dwarven syrup.  A bit over-blessed actually as the syrup took up all the free barrels, and my chef/bartender grumbled that there were no free barrels left for brewing.  And due to an appalling lack of oversight we were out of anything drarven, and were forced to broach the barrels of strawberry wine and sewer brew bought from the treehuggers and humans (shudder).  Something had to be done, and fast.  So I instructed the chef to make lavish meals so that we could free up the barrels for brewing.  Little did I know how literally he would take me...

His dish: *Dwarven Syrup Roast*

This is a stack of 39 finely-prepared Dwarven syrup roast.  The ingredients are finely minced Dwarven syrup, finely minced Dwarven syrup, finely minced Dwarven syrup and superiorly minced Dwarven syrup.

We are hoping the next caravan will sell us some milk to wash this down...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / A "Prince"ly seed
« on: January 27, 2008, 05:38:00 pm »
The embark size is a bit big so I doubt it is wiki-worthy but here's a potentially interesting area I found.

33g - Seed 1999 min size:4x6  high cliffs

brook and underground river
magma - one lake
iron - some hematite.  Not rare, but not common either.  No magnetite, so you can't do extensive steel production
Flux - some marble, a lot of chalk.
Sand - yellow sand
adamantine -  a good bit. and hidden fun stuff below.
chasm - yes, it looks like an empty magma pipe.  not heavily populated
Trees - yes
civs - all four

DF Gameplay Questions / possesed mood problem - what does she want?
« on: December 10, 2007, 01:56:00 am »
My jeweler is possessed with a fey mood and takes over the jewel shop.  She gathers quite a few materials quickly then stops.  I look at her demands, make some raw crystal glass which she grabs, then stalls again.  t on the jeweler's shop shows the following contents:

raw green glass
raw green glass
rough red zircon
birch logs
oak logs
oak logs
cave spider silk cloth
raw crystal glass

q on the shop shows the following loop:

raw... green...
rough... color... (pause)
tree life
cloth thread
raw crystal
tree... life (pause)

then it loops back to raw green.  Just in case I made another raw crystal glass and a clear glass, she's still stuck, and from the loop she seems to be stuck on the second set of logs?

Her profile shows likes of Galena, Rose Gold, Pineapple Opal, Ivory, Pig tail fabric and the color vermilion.  I have galena ore, rose gold bars, and pig tail cloth in my stockpiles.  Pineapple opals and elephants aren't available, so I can't get any more of her profile items.  Any suggestions?

DF Gameplay Questions / Tree quota imminent
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:45:00 pm »
Last year I got the "we can't tolerate you disrespecting the trees" message, so I clearcut the forest, overflowing my stockpiles to the point that I still have logs lying in the (former) woods.  Now the Elven diplomat has shown up again - this time I'm sure with his "100 logs" proposal.  I've read that agreeing to this and logging more than agreed gets you attacked by elven raiders, so I'd rather not go through that.

But what happens if I tell him I'm not interested in the restriction?
