DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Getting the hang of combat

Always use Fast attack option (u) when selecting an attack. Speed matters more than damage. Also, use "," key to wait for 1 tick instead of "." that waits 10 ticks.

Can confirm the "twists the toe tearing lower leg apart". Here's straight example:

Iron-armored, Superhuman Str, Endurance, Toughness adventurer. An Adequate level swordsman launched the puny deflected stab with a shit-quality short sword that bounced off the plate gauntlet... And instantly crippled the hand.

I would be content if this was a one-of-a-kind bad luck roll, but this happens all the time in fights. The only redeeming factor is that tendons torn this way heal back fully.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: how do i locate a vault?

Do they reveal the location of vaults?
Recently I've had several peasants mention that there's trouble brewing with the neighbors due to their godlessness. A quick check revealed they were talking about the inhabitants of a vault. Didn't share it's location though.

They will reveal the name of the vault site, which you can ask directions for. Take into account, that it takes quite a lot of asking 'about surroundings' - I generally have about 30-50 useless hamlets, forests and hills mentioned before something interesting comes along. This is fine since vaults contain what can be considered a

. Of course, the further the vault is from the NPC's hometown, the less is the chance they will talk about it.

Of course, you can go to legends viewer and do all the aforementioned stuff. Or you can integrate the search into your adventure and make it interesting. Travel from village to village, asking everyone "About surrounding area". It might take a while, but eventually, some peasant in the middle of nowhere might tell you a legend of what's happened in a time before time...

Finding adv mode lacking? Play as human peasant,  recruit animal people as companions, don't use skill farming, don't get the vamp curse (necro is fine), try fighting a fire-breathing/web-slinging titan that is not made of filmsy stuff, try exploring the arctic.

If you got a boring world roll (i.e. no !FUN! monsters or powers) or chose to munchkin/glitch abuse your way through the game, then you've just wrought it onto yourself.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Peaceful night trolls?
« on: March 05, 2018, 04:59:24 am »
Recently started a new adventure in 44.05. Smaller world, high savagery and beasts. New hero adventurer receives a quest from the local lord - Kill a night troll in a lair nearby. Simple enough, I gather some companions and head out. Upon arrival at the site, I see the creature immediately and brace for battle. However, what follows next is this exchange:

(Edited out is the random companion chatter that is irrelevant)

My character managed to successfully creep out a night creature. Anyway, are night trolls supposed to be this way in current version, or did I mess up something when upgrading with the graphics pack?
Seems like this bug: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/mantisbt/view.php?id=10520  , but that was 44.04.

the mino lost access to the ability to punch so just imagine the punch and all the force with it died on a nerve level and you got hit with a meaty noodle of an arm going through your character's hair.

This absolutely makes sense. Thanks!

P.S: my stomach hurts from laughing too hard

Wear 100 mail shirts
Hold onto 100 shields
Stuff dead megabeasts into backpack and use it as a bludgeon.

My advice here: step back and let it suffocate because its upper spine is damaged.

The second pike stab brained it (Legendary pikeman). First hit missed with legendary pike, while first punch from mino landed vs legendary dodge... This is some Darkest Dungeon-grade RNG bull. No pun intended.

This happens sometimes due to quirks in the game's combat system.

I've noticed it happens mostly when extremely large creatures attack very small critters. Never thought it could happen with human-sized target.

Human adventurer, legendary dodge. First hit from minotaur lands, but passes through the head! How is this possible? Could it be the problem with the raws? Vanilla DF 44.03, mayday tileset

Ok, found a univarsal solution. Apparently, if you want an apt adventurer title, you can pick it at the character creation screen. When choosing the name, use "The" to define additional parts of the name (E.g. Urist McAdventurer the Ace-Bronze Beard). Anything that you define after "the" will not get overwritten after 5 significant kills, and will serve as de-facto epithet for your adventurer.

Did you exit the screen and pull up your status screen to check the name again after using it?

I know it did need to refresh the display before and I thought I fixed it so it wasn't like using gm-editor to change a name where you gotta set/unset a nickname, but I just tested the name changing and it didn't work until then apparently?

Yes, I did that. Also tried fast-travelling, waiting, saving-reloading and retiring/unretiring. Still, to no avail. Though when bringing names screen again, it DOES reflect the changed name. But apparently it is the only time the changed name is actually seen.

They've got a weird older buggy version of names in there for some reason but I've got the various repaired ones waiting on a merge.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/maxthyme/scripts/master/names.lua

Use the look cursor to pic your target though, I still need to get the status/inventory hook back in.

Did as you've told. New names.lua doesn't generate red-colour spam in DFhack console, but still fails to change the name of the adventurer.

Blue balls of failure
You actually got this, and not something like "The Imperious Lobster of Cake?"
That's something to be treasured, if you ask me.

I agree. However, I tend to get the latter (Lobster of cake, mirrors of cavorting, saturnine truss of dreams) much more often.
