DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The consequences of war
« on: January 14, 2014, 04:50:51 pm »
If he'd been the one to go out into the world and tame elkbirds, no more elk bird cavalry for the goblins.
Well that is a good news and bad news. Mostly bad I guess - meat industry would suffer. Would they still be able to come, say, on cave crocs?

My dwarves killed the goblin king in a siege (he too was a demon).
Are adamantine-dwelling demons just as tough? If yes, then by Armok's beard... 4 full squads had trouble beating the pig to death...

DF Gameplay Questions / The consequences of war
« on: January 14, 2014, 04:53:41 am »
Dwarf fortress Locunrimtar have just fended off the most ferocious siege on my memory. In fact, 3 screens of invaders made it a full-scale international inasion. There were notable events, that could have far reaching consequences I'd like to enqure about.

WARNING: Lots of text. Do not open if you dont feel like reading.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've paused the game at this point and would like to clarify some points. Some of the events were underlined, and I'd really like to hear what are the consequences of those. The events are outlined below for your convenience, or if it was TLDR:

1."In the meantime, siege engineer fired a ballista, skewering 2 gobins and 1 caravan guard"
2."Elite goblin crossbowman and Axeman have fled"
3."mauled an unprotected Dwarven trader to death."

And especially, the general. Who was he?  Such ammount of punishment taken... Was he a forgotten beast? What will happen after his death? Wiki claims the sieges will be over...

Thakyou in advance.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Military tactics

Thankyou! The burrow idea is actually neat, gonna try that. On the side note, do you know how to make my legendary bone-carver/axedwarf stop doing drills WHILE INACTIVE and get the hell to BONE CRAFTS! Sry for caps, it really annoys me :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Spam
« on: January 12, 2014, 08:25:59 pm »

This.

The seed pile has plenty spawns and no barrels, just bags. I do understand that spawns mght be in one single bag that gets hauled around, generating this spam. Yet, is there any way to minimize this? I have aready skipped a couple of important annoncements (megabeasts) Using soundsense is nigh impossible, as it plays the "Negative" voice responce over and over. Any assistance is appreciated.

DF Gameplay Questions / Military tactics

Nothing in the game gave my face more palm than military. Sure dwarves are not the brightest kin, but those uniformed airheads are even more dumb than the civilians! At least civs can run away instead of charging 30 cave croc-mounted goblins  and getting slaughtered. Yet, given the complex nature of the game, I reckon I just lack knowledge. Henceforth, could you please clarify the following:

1.Is it possible to order militia to retreat (preferably to the trap-riddled corridors) after they have already saw/charged the enemy?
2.Is it possible to do hit-and-run tactics with squad of marksdwarves? At the moment they just stand and shoot until challenged in melee and slaughtered, oblivious to the "move" command and alerts.
3.Goblin spearmaster is serving the fortress as a target practice for marksdwarves. Though none of the squad members can hit him (arrows get blocked/dodged), will they still get "Marksman" skill-ups?
4.Will stationed militiamen withness/report vampires?

Thankyou!

Disband the squad, and reform it without your woodcutter.  Alternately, set another civilian up with the wood-cutting job; he or she should pick up one of your spare axes and go to work.

Thankyou very much. It worked!

Ugh, I guess dwarf logic goes against common sense in that one can use the same axe for woodcutting and for killing... Ok, I  will take it into account. Any suggestions on how to fix current situation? I have 2 copper axes in storage.

The game drives me insane... It literally trolls me. Or else, how do you explain the following:

After starting a new game, an Axedwarf-Wood Cutter is created. He is then appointed to the squad  and given an order to chop down some trees. But the moment I hit "t" (inactive) to cancel military duty, Axedwarf simply dropps the copper axe on the ground and enters the "No Job" status, as obviously, the wood chopping job cannot be carried out without an axe.

It is impossible to  chop wood from now on. I've tried switching squad to active and back, but it only repeated the above situation. What's worse, no other dwarf picks the said axe up even if appointed to Wood Cutting job. Help! I dont want to trade with elves (yuck)!

P.S: DF 0.34_11

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Prisoners and how to handle them (no DM)

Thankyou for answering. The zoo is expanding very fast...

I have no idea why, but it seems my fortress got sieged 3 times this year.  As you see, this time, goblin axelord, who masterfully dodged 12 stonefalls and 10 weapon traps ended up in a cage. Now I'd like to execute him. Is there a way to do this without having military fight him?

Thankyou for answering! Everything is much more clear now, yet a couple of new questions arise.

1.I've noticed the dragons are badly injured from setting off a weapon trap before ending trapped in a cage. Can animal caretakers patch them up without too much risk? DF version 0.34_11
2. Is it possible to train a goblin to legendary using danger rooms for use as a last resort weapon (against humans or elves)?
3.Captured goblins have a male and female. Is it possible to breed goblins?

That is one of the reasons I like DF. You can ask seemingly ridicilous questions and it still sounds right.

DF Gameplay Questions / Prisoners and how to handle them (no DM)
« on: November 09, 2013, 01:22:39 am »
After a huge and gift-abundant goblin christmas, I've found, that along with goblinite there were 2 cave dragons, 1 jabberer, 1 goblin bowman and 3 goblin hammermen captured via cage traps. Since this is the first time my fortress got prisoners of war, the following questions have arised among the inhabitants:

1.Can we safely move, feed and maintain the said prisoners without Dungeon Master?
2.Can cave dragons be re-tamed to serve Nosetraded's glorious cause?
3.Can jabberer be re-tamed to serve Nosetraded's glorious cause?
4.Can we feed the aformentioned caged beasts? What do they eat?
5.Can we put the aformentioned caged beasts in a zoo for dwarven babes' amusement?
6.Or better yet,  can we butcher them?
6.Can we feed the goblins? What do they eat?
7.Can we strip the caged goblins of their weabons and armor?
7.Can we put the aformentioned caged goblins in a zoo for dwarven babes' amusement?
6.Or better yet,  can we butcher them?
8.And as a final resort, can we safely trade all POWs to caravan without Dungeon Master?

Thankyou in advance for assisting your fellow dwarves.

P.S: I've read the wiki, but got even more confused.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fortress gender ratio bias

Thankyou for answering! Vey funny remarks, yet the question still stands: is there any way to control this? Or do I have to just live with amazon fortress?

Start a fort where you plan to not accept migrants and only grow your population through breeding.  Murphy's law dictates you'll end up with a situation where that is impossible.  Chances are it will be a sausage fest :p
That sounds interesting... I might try and see if it will be any FUN.

DF Gameplay Questions / Fortress gender ratio bias

I do not intend to sound sexist, yet it has to be made clear. Every time I start a new fortress, in almost all cases (90%) the starting party is either all-females, or predominantly females. It makes it somewhat hard to roleplay dwarves (Incredibly muscular unbelievably tough slow to tire Axe lord...female).
Not that it hinders the gameplay however, but the strange reoccurences of the said fact make me wonder why...
