DF Modding / Re: Making Salt a valuable trade good
« on: November 17, 2013, 02:02:12 am »
1: What would be a good valuation of salt for the medieval period or what would be a good valuation in DF? I was thinking either Mat value between 3 and 5 but I have been reading some historic resources that suggest that the relative value of salt might be higher.
I seem to recall one figure saying salt was worth it's weight in gold in medieval times. Thus the superstion of throwing salt over your shoulder has nothing to due with bad luck, and everything to do with hiding the evidence of your wastefulness. Also, Medieval salt containers (called cellars) were often made of silver or gold and studded with gemstones. Seriously valuable stuff. Though for balance reasons, might want to lower the value a bit. Or just make the reaction extremely inefficient.

@Durgess:

A little tangential but what do you mean "as random gen doesn't like masterwork?"  I've only ever made random worlds with the advanced settings.  Am I missing out on something by not using Meph's special world seeds?
Whenever I use vanilla world gen on masterwork I find the civilizations to barely support the mod. I might get a few new items and pets, but no underground crops for example. When I run pre-gened worlds, I can embark with at least most of the supplies available. But that was in the last version, and is just my experience.

How about some form of botulism/food poisoning, creating a building % chance of infection the longer a (cooked) food item is stored? I find I end up with far too much food in my forts, so having some risk of spoilage even with proper storage would be a plus. And if it can be identified, the spoiled food could be used as a torture tool delicacy for parasites nobility.

Sounds interesting. Would the different civs all run on the same thread, so following the whole thing is easier, or would they all have their own threads so they are less cluttered? This would also be a great idea for the next update, as then you could build one fort and retire it, build the next and retire, build the last and retire, then watch hilarity ensue as the 3 civs fight each other.

If others are up for it, I'll join. First question on the block: what world do we use, as random gen doesn't like masterwork? Do we want them all to use the same site, or do we want to tailor the site to the race?
