DF Gameplay Questions / Should wall be included in room designation
« on: December 08, 2022, 02:52:03 pm »
I have always designated bedrooms / offices etc. based on the open space within the walls, i.e. not including the inner wall tile in the designation of the room.

I am seeing in Steam DF that the 'Multi' zone maker seems to include the wall around whatever you designate as part of the room. I have a few questions.

1. Is the Steam Multi way I described normal?! Do y'all do that?

2. Does adding the wall add value to the room?

3. IIRC from years ago - overlapping rooms severely impact the room quality. Is that still true? And so, better not to include wall if it overlaps?

4. Does someone know how to see room quality in Steam DF? As in, list of all rooms and their quality. (meager, modest, etc.)

Thanks! It's good to be back.

Life Advice / AP classes & dealing with workload
« on: June 25, 2014, 11:34:37 pm »
Hi everyone,
This fall I will be a senior in high school, and I have signed up for a challenging schedule with 6 AP courses (out of 8 total courses). Most of my peers and I suppose most high school students in general allotted their most challenging course-load in their junior year, while for me this will be the most AP in one school year so far. My concern is not so much in my ability or capacity but in staying focused and fully applying myself. Along with the classes I will be active in a few clubs and will need to work on college applications. I know there are a lot of smart people in this community who have experience with rigorous school work, so any advice would be much appreciated.

The specific AP's I am taking are World History, European History, US Government, Statistics, English Literature and Environmental Science. Any advice on taking those courses would also be appreciated. I plan on buying the AP prep books early and reading through them before the school year starts, especially for the social studies.

Thanks!

General Discussion / Energy Drinks
« on: January 28, 2011, 11:19:20 pm »
So, I've heard a lot of controversy about energy drinks (Red Bull, Monster, Rockstar etc.), about how bad they are for you, and how they can affect your heart and brain etc...but I have never understood why they are targeted so much when many people drink 1-2 cups of coffee per day, as well as lots of sodas. I was wondering about what some of the other 'energizing' ingredients in these drinks actually did, and I found this article. It briefly describes ginseng, taurine, guarana and others. Some of these are just different forms of caffeine.

So my question is, is there something about energy drinks that makes them worse for your body than the equivalent amount of caffeine and sugar that you could consume through coffee, tea, and sodas? Do any of the other ingredients in particular cause problems?

Life Advice / Accutane
« on: October 31, 2010, 07:46:55 pm »
Hello,
I have just begun to take Accutane (now marketed as Claravis, isotretinoin) for the treatment of acne and would like to know if anyone here has had any experience with it. My dermatologist is a family friend whom I trust and he assured us that the risk of any serious side-effects were very low. I have my blood checked each month while taking it as a precaution.

Other Games / Warcraft 3: TFT hosting issues
« on: July 13, 2010, 05:16:52 pm »
I know, these are the Bay12 forums, yadda yadda, but I can't seem to log in to the Battlenet forums and I know there are some Warcraft players here.

Anyway, no one can join games I host. I have ports 6112-6119 forwarded (set to Both). I have firewalls turned off. For a month or so I could host just fine, then all of the sudden I couldn't anymore. Any ideas?

Life Advice / Headphone cord does not fit correctly in jack
« on: June 10, 2010, 09:29:31 pm »
I have one of these (not as tricked out as this, but I have the mini headphone jack in the bottom left compartment).
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And I bought a pair of Skullcandy headphones and the little bastard cord does not seem to fit the jack very well. It is one of those deals where plugging it in all the way gives me sound from the right ear, and then pulling it out a little gives me sound from both sides briefly and then cuts out, and pushing it in hard gives me both sides but needs to be held in place. Occasionally they just work when I plug them in, but it is very annoying to have to tinker with the plug...are there any solutions to this (adapters or something)? The headphones fit my iPod perfectly, btw.

Life Advice / Speech improvement ideas
« on: April 12, 2010, 05:51:19 pm »
Often I pronounce 'sss' as 'shh', especially when I am speaking quickly. Has anyone had this problem, and are there any ways I can get rid of this?
I have quite an overbite (probably will get it fixed eventually), could that be what is causing it?

Life Advice / Can I get this old webcam to run in Windows 7?
« on: March 03, 2010, 07:53:06 pm »
I have a Logitech 8K89 I.T.E. webcam from a few years ago (3 or 4). I am running Windows 7, and I know for sure that it will not run with Logitech's drivers. Is there any other software that I could run it with?

Also, if I download Windows XP Mode (designed for Ultimate and Pro Windows 7 users) from an unofficial website could I get it to run on Home edition?

Also, here's the cam I'm using. Couldn't find bigger pic.

I have multiple resting dwarves at the moment, and all of the sudden I'm being spammed by 'cancelled job, no water source' announcements. They have been retrieving water for a long time now, I have not blocked off either of the sources. One source is a flowing river, one is a well, and both are perfectly accessible. There are plenty of buckets. This came up shortly after moving the save to 40d16, but I don't think that had much to do with it. Any help?

Roll To Dodge / Asylum RTD - Inactive
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:58:10 pm »
Alright, I've got one game running, but I had this idea.

You are all patients in an insane asylum. You are all in your own cells, but you are on the same floor. Today, you have all woken up with one purpose: escape.

To join, give me your characters name, physical appearance, and their mental condition. It can be pretty much anything you like, as long as it does not cause your character to kill him/herself, and the character is able to at very least walk around without trouble. Each character starts out in his or her personal room. All six of you are on the same floor of the building, and the doors in your rooms all lead into the same hallway.

Room Desc
You are in your small room here in the Mayfield Psychiatric Hospital. The walls are painted a dull white color, and the floors are smooth tile. The bright ceiling light is above your head. The door leading out into the hall is locked, you have a small, thick, reinforced window to peer out of in the center of the door. There are no other windows. In your room is your bed, a comfortable chair, a table, and a simple device that can be used to call for a nurse. There is a small digital clock on one wall, placed high above your reach. It reads 8:30 A.M. All the sharp edges on the furniture have been padded for safety. You are wearing a comfortable, simple outfit. No pockets. There is not a keyhole on the door, they are locked/unlocked with a keycard.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

This is not a crazy RTD, your actions need to be realistic. There are no magic/superpowers, you are just human people. Turns last 30 minutes in the game, so if you do something that will take longer than that, you may have to wait to complete your action.

I'll try to make the wound system realistic, and when NPCs (whatever you like to call them) take action, I will roll for them just like I roll for your characters.

I'll take six characters.
1. Inaluct (Inaluct) - Patient

Roll To Dodge / Helmaroc's RTD - Inactive
« on: April 11, 2009, 04:20:58 pm »
Alright, you all know how a RTD works. This is not a crazy impossible RTD. Try to be realistic with your actions. You can do seemingly impossible things, as long as you have the tools, time, and space to do them...you know, no summoning demons unless you find the means to do so, and you can't complete time-consuming tasks in a single turn.
I'll take six players.
1. Korgan (Mad Larks)

To join just give me a character name, and any other info you want to add. Your character must be human, and cannot start out with any powers/magic/extreme skills. The time period is modern, remember that when describing your character.

There's going to be a fairly realistic wound system, I'll try to make it pretty detailed. Rather than putting "badly wounded", I'd aim for "broken leg, bruised ankle, burn on hip", you know. Each turn will last about 30 mins to an hour, depending on what you decide to do and how the story is progressing. Healing will be realistic. If you break your arm, you're going to have a broken arm for quite a while.

Starting Room Desc
You find yourself in a large, white room. There are five other individuals in the room with you. There are no visible lights in the room, but it is illuminated and you clearly see everything. You and the others are in the center of the room. There is a door in front of you. It has a brass knob. In the room there are three bunk beds, therefore there are six bunks. They all appear to have been slept in recently. You notice you are wearing white pajamas. You do not remember where you are, or what has happened in the last few days. The last thing you remember you were visiting the new art museum downtown. There is a small, black object on the ceiling in one corner. There is a ceiling speaker above your heads.

DF Gameplay Questions / Retrieving underwater object
« on: April 08, 2009, 11:31:45 am »
My fort was doing well, but, soon after completing my moat, I realized I had drowned the farm. Dumb, I know. But, almost all of the seeds are currently in the water, in a barrel. The moat is fed by a stream, it is completely 7/7 depth.

Here's the fort: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-5407-ragrack
And, to make things quicker, the point of interest (seeds): http://mkv25.net/dfma/poi-13312-sunkenseeds

Can I retrieve the barrel? And if so, how?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Fort Layouts
« on: April 06, 2009, 04:59:41 pm »
I've been playing DF for about a year and a half, but since my first few forts, the layout has been pretty much the same. Simple, but boring. A trade depot and entrance at surface, food, farms, workshops, storage on the first level underground, and housing on the second. Of course, there are other things spread about the 3 levels I use, and I often mine to the bottom layer in an attempt to find minerals, but the basic idea is the same.
Whenever I see a pic/video of someone else's fort, they look drastically different. Above-ground buildings, complex trap systems, walls, etc.

How do you layout your forts, and which way do you find the most effective?

DF Bug Reports / [40d] FPS very low, even with modified init
« on: December 03, 2008, 06:31:05 pm »
I downloaded 40d and flashdrove it over to my PC. I copied the folder to my desktop, and a few moments later I opened the file. I went into the data>init>init file and set it how I usually do. G FPS down to 10, weather off. I have been able to pull off maybe 30-40 FPS with this setup. But, now, (the changes are saved in the init file, nothing else has been modified) I only get about 5, at the menus. Not even a fort running. I'm sure I've done something wrong in some way, and this isn't really a bug, but maybe you guys could help out.
