So I once again downloaded Dwarf Fortress, the third time I have downloaded Masterwork (forgetting that I don't need the vanilla DF), and the first time I actually get to read and modify another mod while using another person's code. So without further ado, I will explain my situation...

I remember not being able to be infected by the 'extra' add-on vampires from Fear the Night, so drinking their blood was the equivalent to drinking water (as far as the game was concerned).

I want to be able to change that, but the multiple codes from vampires already look like if they could reproduce, so what am I missing? I put an example from "Lesser Vampire Curse 3" to show you below, see how it says "Ingestion"? More accurately, does this mean I can get infected once again by non-vanilla vampires?

DF Suggestions / Re: Medieval Stasis. Please keep it civil.
« on: March 17, 2014, 07:41:05 pm »
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
[/spoiler]

I like this idea of better artifact descriptions and a second type of artifact which is more frequent than actual artifacts as well as being able to be reproduced by their original creator. Personally, I was all against the tech progression, but this post made it for me. Being able to wear and hold a artifact produced by my legendary swordsman & smithy adventurer-turned worker (adv-to-fort mode) as a descendant of him/her would just be plain awesome, -BONUS- if they are family heirlooms.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You beat me to it; however, I would find it better to split V into V and VI. V being the current tech-level of DF and VI containing all the wacky stuff.

I do suggest that after this, there would be an additional option of technology progression, which simply allows for technology to advance after x happens or x times goes by.

Defeating non-technological monsters would just be part of the experience of lower technologies. Our ancestors hunted herd animals such as deer/stags in hunting parties back in the stone ages, even then nothing was for sure, it was a gamble to hunt large game. Now any village idiot can go around and kill the alpha/dominant male with a single shot from his rifle under an hour, even when it would take days for a group of experienced hunters days to just kill the sickest and weakest large game animal they could.

Overall, I think this advancing technology stuff should be more of a plug-in (or even a mod) than part of the actual game. It takes space, memory, and time (oh boy, I spent about two hours trying to generate a large world to 125 years with unlimited population, sites, and an extra modded race, it was finishing deploying/dropping/whatever civs when the whole thing just closed, not crashed, but closed. In the end, I settled for basic gen with medium world & history, high civs & minerals, and very high everything else.). Plus, I would have for DF to become one of those unlocking games where you need x or y to advance to the next stage. Even with no linear progression (e.g., high farming but very low metalsmithing, or visa-verse), I already feel that it would be too linear for me.

My two cents

Sorry guys, I had to wipe my PC (again) for some graphics card error I've been getting ever since I wiped my PC for the first time. Sadly, I could not save the game; however, on the upside, I still have the modified raws (about one hour or two of work), and installed about 100MB of updates on my PC, which possibly means problem solved as no more Intel Graphics Driver Crashes have appeared. I could write a second post detailing what went through, if anyone is interested, while I was playing, though no images are to prove what happened or any legends story/screenshot.

Foreword:

This will be the story of two characters in a small (33x33), minimally modded game. I already created the first character, after he dies or preferably, reaches Legendary in Swordsmanship. I will make and abandon 12 fortresses in a row after either "Victory" conditions are met, in order to simulate an offspring. This offspring will then adventure, looking to make a name for his/her self after living twelve years under the shadow of his/her famous parent. Depending on whenever the parent is still alive or has died, he/she will challenge parent to a duel or seek revenge against those that have killed parent.

INTRO to Smata Xestu
I messed with the raws of vanilla game to include a winged, water-breathing creature called a Foxman which is simply a rip-off human of humans with the two exceptions above, have their maxage doubled, and their stats are at max. I then made them able to spawn on any land biome as well as build their civs on land, all other races (Dwarfs, Elves, Goblins, & Kobolds) can also build outdoor walls, tunnels, bridges, and roads. To make adventuring easier, I made elves the same size as humans. Moreover, kobolds can speak & have musicality, their local bandit tag was also removed so they are no longer hostile to everyone. Vampires are not sterile, can become were-wolfs, and necromancers as well, this will be the goal of both characters. Foxmen like to fight.

A PEASANT IS BORN- Fact or Fiction?

My parents were adventurers, my grandparents were adventurers, and my great-grand parents were also adventurers Alas, all of them were killed before I was born. If you feel confused, let me explain; goblins live on the northern extreme of our world and they have been raiding our settlements for 350 years, since the start of time. They are creatures mainly of myth nowadays, you might see one or two but they have for the most part died off, nobody knows why. However, one thing is clear, their legacy lives on. They took elves, humans, dwarves, and us foxmen; nothing could stop them, and slowly but surely, their whole population was weaker than the beings they took as slaves, when they robed mothers of their babies. My birth coincided with such a raid, and before I knew it (for I was not even born at the time), they killed my mother, who I am told died in a heroic stand against the beasts. They say she was wealthy, but the goblins took everything I had. Had the village weapon-smith not found me, I would have probably died inside of my mother's womb. And here I stand, today with my six year old child; wonders this live can be.

As a lad, I was the town helper, someone needed something done, and I did it. The weapon-smith took good care for me, for all my relatives were killed in the struggle, all adventurers I dare to add; and my mother, as I am told, was a snob, so he did not have to take care of me at all. I helped him and he helped me, poor chap never married, but I am of his son and blood as much as my family have been adventurers. He died of old age, which is why I came to adventure in the first place, I was his son, but not his apprentice; needless to say, the new weapon-smith had little appreciation of me, he tried to make us like each other, but his apprentice is of low-social standing and still envies me as much as I loved his master.

So there I started, on the road to the capital from one of it's farthest cities. A know-nothing with only five servings of meat, a rope fibre costume with a leather cap, and a water-skin. The only thing of value I had was a bronze sword and copper shield, a gift from the weapon-smith a year prior. I knew I was destined to great things. I sneaked through the road to the capital, in case a wild animal should see me and at the best opportunity, I went into the wilderness. Not four hours have passed since I began my adventure that I had to cross a river and I was about to leave when I heard I shriek. Long in the distance, to the left of the river I saw nothing but a great cicada! I had nothing on the beast, but I knew it was my destiny to slay it!

third image <------ Image here

So I got a handful of pebbles, right on the spot and start throwing them at the beast, some twenty tiles away! Clearly, most of them do not hit the beast, only three of them did and they were right after another. These three pebbles bring the mighty titan down on it's side, it has not moved so I sneak closer and hide behind a boulder. I gather more rocks, but alas, none of them hit the unmoving insect. I decide that it is time for desperate measures.

fourth image <--- Image here
fifth image<----- Image here
sixth image <--- Image here

I move next to the beast and SLASH!

seventh image <---- Image here

I've been spotted! I keep stabbing, slashing, and striking the beast until I have the titanous cicada beaten to a bloody pulp. A couple of minutes before I killed the beast, I look at it's current state.

eight image <--- Image here

At long last, I slay the beast through stabbing it's brain.

ninth image <--- Image here

I butcher the bug, grab all of it's meat, it's chitin, and four pieces of hearts.

tenth image <--- Image here

Unscratched, by the time I finish my first kill, I am still of lower skill than your typical hero.

eleventh image <--- Image here

I walk to the farthest town I can before night falls, they let me sleep inside, but somehow miss the fact that I was carrying enough meat to feed the whole village for a month!

twelth image <--- Image here

At daylight, I inquire about the capital to the citizens of the town, helpful they are, for they tell me it's a day's walk to the capital! On the road, I decide to take the easy way and just walk over there without paying too much attention to my surroundings. I had to stop twice to eat, which means that I had already exhausted my supply when I arrived at the capital, already being dusk. I sleep in a near-by house inside the merchant district.

The next morning I tell a merchant of my success, albeit, after a long struggle with the meat and chitin as the damn things slow me down to almost twenty times my speed! After being honoured and titled by the citizens of the capital, I sell the whole meat-pile to the merchant, then I look at her neighbor, and sell the chitin to him. Curiously, they were the only two foxmen in that quarter of the merchant district, selling the same thing, and side-by-side, but both have no family, I suspect something is amiss....

Regardless, I ask and hear how the denizens of the capital have been hounded and scarred by various monsters around and about, but they tell me to go back to one of the extreme northern outposts and speak to some bird brain who has need of them. Unheeding their advice, I listen to the high-sky which tells me to kill an ettin family. I accept his quest and prepare to go on my adventure when disaster strikes!

I have heard of outlaws but never paid any attention to them, so when I go down into their underground place in the city, I encounter metal armour, I was unsure of where I was, but skeletons and metal makes the whole population of the capital look like wimps, not one warrior had metal on them, they all wore either leather or rope fibre cothing, unfit for a man of my position "Righteousworship". I keep sneaking and descending until I encounter an axe(wo)man. She seemed friendly at first, she even told me she was not from the capital, but I found something odd. So I revealed myself and oh was it a mistake! She pushed me next to the wall and started striking me with all her force, I was disoriented during this part of the battle and saw that she, and only she, out of all the warriors in the city wore metal armour. This was one of those legendary bad days, I did not even know if I was going to live, surely this woman would have killed the titan with just one hit for I was beaten badly.

However, I managed to escape and retire, but not fast enough to avoid permanent damage in my toes, have an artery and motor damage on my left foot TWO TIMES, a damaged sensory nerve ending on my right foot, and a damaged motor nerve in my left hand. I lost my copper shield and half of the coins I was carrying.

After this incident I came out of retirement twice. The first time I decided to go down again, but my consciousness held me, this also happened the second time, and now I am resolved to get bitten by those monsters whose body is corrupted, I hear tales about how those people can regenerate whole limbs during each transformation, and will re-achieve the pinnacle of perfection before I dare to adventure again. Stay tuned for part two.

I forgot to add noble positions to a custom race and they are absent from Fortress Mode. Is it possible to add noble positions to the entity file? I used the whole human civ & race as a template for mine, if this is of any importance.

Thank you once again, I am pretty new to modding (as everyone could have already guessed), so I am still learning the bends and curves of the game.

The interaction examples are only examples, they aren't actually looked at by DF. To do stuff with the ingame interactions, you need to look in raw/objects/, you'll find a file called interaction_default.txt, and you can either place your new interactions in there after the existing ones, or create a new interaction file to place your custom interactions into. And you need to edit the raw files first and then generate a new world.
Copy the interaction examples to the objects folder, rename the examples to something else, set vampire/werewolf curses and secrets to 0 in worldgen.

Alright, thank you both for your help, but I am unable to find an "interaction_default.txt" file in the raw/objects folder; however, I did find an "interaction_standard.txt" file, but it does not have anything to do about vampires or werewolf's. I have never encountered them "in-game" and think this has something to do with it (I have not deleted any files and downloaded from the Windows no music link in the dwarf fortress blog a few months ago, I do have the latest version). Should I create an "interaction_default.txt" file or just copy & paste the interactions I would like to have in the "interaction_standard.txt" file?

I am currently modding the game to see if I can make a necromacer, vampire, werebeast whose physical attributes can still be improved; however, my question is where do I do this? Does the game use interaction examples for this, or do I need a special program to change this? If not, do I need to generate a new world and then edit the files?

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress

Will adventurers be able to reproduce in the next release? How does it happen, if at all? Will we be able to play as the son/daughter of x adventurer if they manage to reproduce?* On a related note, will we be able to fast forward time once world gen is complete? Can our adventurers even marry next release?**

Moreover, happy birthday! This thread is one year old since February 15th, 2012!
*I can imagine legacy adventurer mode games. Brace yourself for much !FUN!
**Asking about kids and talking about adventurer legacy games, but I don't even know if they can have a spouse!

Curses / Re: Suggestion: Implementing race in LCS
« on: February 24, 2014, 02:36:02 pm »
I read the whole thread (not much since it's only fives pages +1 post long), and it felt weird that there have been suggestions for race and sub-race, even Jews; however, no one mentioned that Latino/Hispanic are two different ethnic groups composed from a variety of races from 100% White, to 100% Black, to 100% New World Indian; and everything in between. In fact, until recently, Latino (or the less common, but more correct name, Latin; from an English-language standpoint), was used, and could be used, to refer to any of those people whom speak, or are natives of places where Romance languages are spoken (yes, I find it weird too that Haitians are technically Latin, although, the genocide against the French could put them at non-Latin, since they only speak the language mixed with other African tongues).

Regardless, I would be against adding race to the game; nonetheless, if it were to be added, I would like to at least request that not all Hispanics be treated like minorities, some of us are White; a good example (not great or perfect), is the current Pope, he is in all ways Italian genetically, but "Hispanic" because of where he was born.

As for myself, I am of majority Spanish descent (most of it comes from Catalonia and Basque Country), partly Italian (Ligurian to be more specific), and with a sprinkle of French (great-grandfather of my grandmother is French, dunno if Occitian or actual French).

And no, the vast majority of Spaniards are not descended from the "Moors", actually, the Moors took from our genetic stocks, not raped our women.*

*It actually makes sense, it is against Muslim Law for a Christian man to marry a Muslim woman, but not visa-verse. Therefore, if a Christian-Muslim marriage did take place, the children would have identified as Muslim, and it would have been a Muslim man marrying a Christian woman. It is also against Muslim Law to convert to another religion, a capital offense in most Middle Eastern countries (albeit rarely practiced), and there were higher taxes for Spanish Christians (and Jews) in order to coerce them to convert. Then, the 800 year long or so Muslim rule of Spain does not include the entirely, the first years were the conquest (which, by Middle Age standards was as fast as wild-fire) which for Spain were only 8 years, but it took fifty years to keep the Muslims off France for god, following 200 years included varying degrees of control, by the year 900 (the conquest started in 7-11, pun intended and the year is correct), the Muslims only had control of SE Spain, so the country had been a battle-ground for two whole centuries. A decade later the actual rule started and almost the whole of Spain was brought back under Muslim control.

Civil war happened a hundred years later (about 1010), and thus the Muslim rule declined to about half of Spain (if you include Portugal as Spain under Muslim rule, if not then two-thirds of Spain**) by the end of the civil war, about two decades later. My ancestors (did I forget to mention that one of my great times who knows what grandfather was a Northern Scotsman (possibly 100% percent Pict) that took part in the Reconquest? Could be anything from a page to a squire to a knight, or just a plain craftsman) were raiding Muslim cities & villages at this time, and demanded tribute from them until we were strong enough to conquer the area. The following ~150 years experience more waning and waxing under Muslim rule, mostly Eastern Spain, these cat-and-mouse wars last until the early-middle part of the 12th century. By the year 1200, fifty years after a mixture of turmoil, about one-third of Spain is under Muslim rule, and only 10 percent of Portugal. Ever since the 11th century, Muslims have paid tribute to Spaniards, this lasts until the very-late 14th century, the end of Muslim rule. These continuous, non-stop battles last until about the year 1350, where "peace" is made with the Muslims for the approximately 150 years, also because the Black Plague happened and this weakened Spain, Portugal is already whole, complete to modern borders.

Afterwards, as you all know, the union of Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand of Aragon in about 1470 led to a new Crusade on the Muslims which lasted for about 20 years; Columbus gets his voyage, he travels three times, re-discovers the Americas (new to us, but not the Vikings, and definitely not new to Native Americans), dumb!@# calls it "India", ect. and the United States forms the state of Washington, many years later the LCS is born.

**When the Muslims attacked, Portugal was part of Spain if I stand correct, albeit it was never under the Roman Empire, it was under Visigothic rule.

Now remember, Jews are being expelled as well as Muslim, and while this is a religious battle; race does play a part, since this is where we get the term "blue-blood" and how Spain somehow has a 10 percent nobility when the rest of Europe has a 1-5 percent nobility population. Those with a lighter shade would show their arms (specifically the underside of their forearms) to others and proclaim that they were "blue-blooded", descendants of the pre-Muslim rulers of Spain; this helped otherwise unknown people be accepted into the nobility. Back again to the non-Moorish population of Spain, some Jews and Muslims (most likely rich ones, since we also took away the wealth of many Jews; in fact, Sephardi Jews were granted automatic Spanish citizenship a many months ago because of this) converted to Christianity while the great deal of them still practiced their religion. This falls under the Inquisition which I will not discuss right now.

Nevertheless, some might argue that a substantial part of Spain's population has DNA hapogroups exclusive, or at least harbored by the great majority of North African Berbers; to which I reply that this is an idiotic thing to say. Migration has occurred ever since pre-historic times over the Gibraltar straight, and has taken place before, during, and after the Roman Conquest & States of Hispaniola as well as Visigothic rule. I do not say that Spanish-Moorish unions never happened, since the law has been broken ever since it was invented, but they happened at a scale far lesser than the common person believes; especially when you consider that the children would have almost always been Muslim, and the vast majority of Moors have been expelled from Spain during the centuries long Reconquest. Meaning that the possibility of assimilation has to overcome two distinct, centuries apart challenge to finally appear as Moorish genetic influence on the common Spaniard. Of course, rapes have been common in the past (as they are today), but even if a Moorish scum (for I consider all rapist to be scum) raped a Christian woman, the baby would have been most likely killed when born (either because of the father or husband if both or one of them survived, or the mother's own free will), or greatly stigmatized; in addition to the already existing stigma of being a bastard. Remember, women did not have much of a choice in those days and even in the present rape-war babies are stigmatized. In the past they would have been lucky to even survive into adulthood (because of infanticide and the basic child mortality, not to mention that these children would have probably been treated worse than children of a couple (had the woman already had children), because they looked different (and as said before, because they are bastards), and then they would have to overcome the challenge of finding a partner. Remember this is the product of rape and has no fault for how it was conceived. In the end, the combination of these two religions made it near impossible for assimilation of Moors into Spanish stock, but it made it much easier for it to happened the other way around. Also keep in mind, many Christian converted to Muslim and continued to practice Christianity in secret; this was all economically (actually tax) motivated.

This has happened in the near-present as well, think of the mulatto Rhine-land Bastards of France, and the children of Nazi (most likely SS) men born to Scandinavian women, they experienced much rejection and stigma.

What I am trying to say is that Spaniards are in-deed White, and they have many still-White descendants in the New World. Look at Fidel Castro, commie-elite, his grandparents were all from Galicia; Ricky martin has a mostly Spanish ancestry (almost because he has some Corsican, if I am correct). Then there is myself.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?
« on: February 21, 2014, 06:43:48 pm »
I just found my first kobold camp in a cave and it leads right into the caverns (first time as well)! I got exited at the possibility of encountering the funny farm, bad thing is that it is a one way trip :(. I will have to jump from the steps to one z-level below (at least I got lucky with just one level, not 3 or 10). I will keep a mental note of this place and return to it to die a heroic death! On the upside, I managed to kill 100+ Kobolds without serious (a.k.a. permanent) injury and each one has an unique name, yay! Plus I managed to train lots of levels of swordsmanship, from talented (1+ proficient) to High Master! Only one more level until I reach legendary (never done legendary swordsmanship with vanilla game).

11
My first adventurer died being hounded by four boogeymen. I make my second one, he dies of starvation in the middle of the woods... A couple more adventurers later and months of dwarf fortress experience I take the Masterwork mod and make this super-awesome adventurer whose first killed is a counter attack against some mega-spider beast, sword right in the throat; he never died and got a kill list of over 40 noticeable entities, mostly cyclopses, titans, and other kinds of beasts, he even once massacred an entire hamlet whose ruler was a cyclops, ungrateful slaves! I still have his save for later use, year history two, he has lost more imperial soldiers crossing rivers than being murdered.

All this time I never knew about the throw rock and wrestling exploits, so I make my first legendary archer, thrower, fighter, and wrestler swordsman in the vanilla edition of DF. He starts off cool and nice in this dungeon on top of a castle in the year five, a demi-god to further distinguish him. What I find is a whole bloody nest of goblins! So I sneak through the dungeon and stumble upon an overlord, he smashes me to pieces with his minions before finally shooting me in my skull and I barely got a scratch on him. This is barely a heroic death for my human, so I reload the game. Keep in mind, he is in a room about 10-13 goblins full, and below the dungeon standard level, to the left of the staircase. I descend with my adventurer, hack off and arm from the overlord, incapacitate a few goblins, and kill one before they shred me to pieces. Oh boy, did they have a feast, in the last turn before I die, I am unable to stand, have only one arm (with extensive nerve damage), my nose is gone, a speed of 100, and just recovered from passing out; my armour is covered in vomit. Rinse and I repeat it again, this time throwing things against the overlord while sneaking, he passes out, and I arrive to stab his throat, 4 goblins push me around and the above scenario is repeated, this time I am backed into a corner and do not kill anyone. Rinse, and repeat sometimes I kill someone else, but most of the time I am mauled by either some pikegoblin, macegoblin, or swordgoblin, once I was killed by an arrow, and on another ocassion a lasher wooped me into a bloody mess of bones and skin.

Now I am furious, I will kill this overlord and his army of goblins. This is my time. I grab the usual equipment, some vomit, blood, an iron shield, a steel axe, a leg, and a head. I stand next to the stairs, crouching while the goblins below me do whatever goblins do, I throw the axe. *BAM* It cuts off his arm and is sails off flying in the air, then I throw a goblin leg at him, it lands on his head, instantly killing him. No goblin is smart enough to figure out "Hey, where did N, whatever his name was, leg come from" or "Overlord is dead, what happened?". So I go to the other side of the stairs, I'm spotted, so I wait for the neighboring crossbow goblin to come up while I hurl chunks of vomit his way, he comes up and I kill him. Then I descend and ascend, a mace wielding goblin comes up, I dispatch him as well. Then I come down and hurl whatever I can find (a morningstar, cloth tunic, the leg again, ect.) to goblins while sneaking, I clean up the whole room without getting surrounded by them pesky little fellows.

So yeah, I killed a goblin overlord with the leg of a goblin (forgot the name and can't post it right now because I am swimming a three tile wide ocean, will post later).

Masterwork DF / Adventurer Will Not Become a Vampire Lord
« on: November 28, 2013, 09:15:03 am »
Hello, I have recently (2 days ago) created a human adventurer of godly heritage, he has over thirty notable kills, a third of which belong to mega-beasts (four being Vampire Lords) all over the time of one and a half months. The problem is that I would like to play Dwarf Mode without him dying of old age, thus I tried to make him a vampire. He has killed four extremely strong vampires and they are literally all over this world I have created (which is of medium size and only 10 years old), but despite drinking what appears to be their blood (none had blood splatter named after them, it just said blood; I drinked from where they were slain and the weapon I used to kill them as well as one surrounding pool), my character is not a vampire because I have drowned him various times already and his physical stats have not even bulged. My question is, what am I doing wrong?

Also happy Thanksgiving!

DF Modding / Re: [MODDING] 0.34. QUESTIONS THREAD

Is there a mod or a way to edit the raw files and get the world history to continue while playing (either Fortress Mode or Adventure Mode, does not matter)? Or maybe let the history run a few more years after playing? I know this feature will come in the next update, but if there is an existing mod or way to do this, I would greatly appreciate it.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Adventure Mode Little Questions Thread

If I were to retire my adventurer due to a missing limb, severed nerve, or just plain boredom and take on about two or five years of Fortress Building in a proximate (close) area, would that adventurer be perfectly healthy when I play him/her again? Would he/she be able to have children during this period? Can they die or worse not regain any lost limbs?
