Just a quick note: it's likely that meat products being uncookable is an unintended feature, so here's a quick fix.

Open material_template_default.txt in the raws folder for your save, then replace all [MEAT] tags with [MEAT][EDIBLE_COOKED] instead.

Bah, you young kids these days got it easy. Back in my day, we had to learn how to mine up and down! I had to search forever to find a nice long sheer cliff that faced left or else I'd get too confused. Then we had to learn about this damn new fluid stuff as well. Used to be you built the floodgate, pulled the lever and the whole damn world flooded. Now it's barely a trickle.

Frankly I don't think that's really needed. Historically most of the parts of the butchered animal would be eaten, everything from the hooves to the nostrils. It's only in recent times that we've become picky about what parts we're interested in consuming, limiting our definition of edible to muscle tissue. Plenty of people still eat brains, livers, kidneys and so forth even today; have a look in your local meat section and no doubt you'll find these. You might find the idea of eating such tissues distasteful, but I doubt my dwarves share your culinary preferences.

Just remember that a furniture object won't contribute to room value if you make a room from it. So assigning that chair as a study to your noble is as effective as using a -schist throne-.

I don't bother woodcutting or fishing. Let the merchants bring the wood to me, I say. They bring one log for each dwarf in your fortress minus the total you already have. Once you hit the 60 dwarf mark you get three shipments per year, more than meeting your needs. Frankly I only use tower cap logs for beds, and the rest are converted into charcoal for smelting. I also import all my bins and barrels too, so there's few jobs in my fortress for which I really need wood. Build it from stone or metal, I say. I'm not some pansy wood-loving elf.

Frankly anything in flight doesn't exist. It's why your 20 z-level pit filled with magma won't incinerate the goblins you drop into it until they hit the bottom.

The main reason I didn't want constructions is that they become unremovable once the obsidian is cast. However the fix was posted earlier that you can reconstruct a floor over the cast area and deconstruct it to yield back the stone used in the first construction.

One thing I wonder is if the speech text has been updated now that females don't have beards. For example, the adventurer text has such gems as:

You might as well have hatches filled with burning lignite above the hallway and drop them down onto the enemies. That would be the same effect and much less work. The point here is whether a catapult would accept burning rocks, and it's been proven they don't.

I agree with the previous statements that possibly the only way to get this to work would be a custom smelter reaction to create magma proof catapult parts, preloading the lignite and igniting before launch.

Yeah, the main reason is "because I can." Also, filling the pit will get rid of the annoying undead infesting it. I've decided to go with the construct, cast, reconstruct, deconstruct method. Seems the simplest way to go about it.
