DF General Discussion / Re: Why is there no screenshot thread?

One dwarf versus fifty two orcs, and the dwarf wins.  Cool.

The Eviscerated Attack indeed. Total legend.

It's already in, you just have to add the brackets for it to work.

Meanwhile, anyone else note the decrease in the number of items a dwarf likes? Easier to tailor their artifacts.

Also, I noticed a new material. Horse hoof. Looks like we're getting new kinds of refuse.

DF General Discussion / Re: What was different about the 2D version?

As someone who still plays the 2D version, I'd recommend downloading it. It's still on the main download page.

I use mods to fill holes the game hasn't filled yet. I butcher clothes from the goblins to compensate for hauling problems. I use orcs to increase the challenge against champions. I use Dwarf Manager to handle job assignments. Nothing major. I don't even like using tilesets.

What are you trying to build? Certain items (eg. animal traps) aren't built by carpenters, but by dwarves with the trapping skill enabled.

I always figured Elves were actually trees.  Not descended from trees, but actual trees.
I can see the mistake there. Here's the difference: you cut trees with woodcutters. You cut elves with axedwarves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Food's a hassle... am I doing it wrong?

Trade for food. Traders will bring enough food to feed and water approximately 30 stout dwarves year round. Then once you have a decent breeding pool of animals, you should never have to harvest a single plump helmet.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Getting dwarves to fall in love

I like to draft all married males into the military, and leave the females to do the work for the fortress. I end up with legendary female armorsmiths and weaponsmiths, with their champion husbands wearing their masterwork armor and wielding their masterwork weapons.

I'd propose that Meta's design would work were it created over a chasm or bottomless pit as suggested. Downsides are many, not the least of which is the game pausing when cave-ins occur.

Drafting dwarves prevents developing marriage in my experience. They'll become lovers but never marry while in the military.

As was mentioned before, religion and personality play a role in their compatability, but also age. Most marriages have been between dwarves of similar ages from my experience.

Time spent together is essential of course, so locking them in a cell together is a good strategy.

It has also been noted that marriages are most likely between immigrants who arrive in the same wave.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Capturing live fish
« on: August 05, 2009, 06:01:26 am »
IIRC, you must construct the trap in the water and bait it before it'll catch live fish. That's how it worked in the 2D version anyhow. Haven't tried it since then.

This is as has been stated a problem with the raws.

Either track down the item in question if you've modded anything, or reinstall the folder with a plain vanilla version. You'll have to regen a new world, but if you're attached to your location you can always copy the world gen info from the legends screen.

As a fellow father I applaud the author of this thread for sharing his interest with his son. I hope I can have a similarly close relationship with my children when they grow old enough.

To those that rant about violence I challenge you to have children of your own and repeat what you're saying. Being a parent changes your entire life and the values you hold as well.
