Okay I'm not sure about the local customs but I can probably guess the meaning behind the skull.

I hide near the edge of the lake and watch the building for a while to see if I can see someone enter/leave, or any sign of what's going on in there. I also look around the lake clearing to see if there are any paths or roads leading away from here.

Hm, even with these growing at record-breaking speed, I'm probably going to be crunched for time getting renegadelobster used to his. I was hoping I'd be able to determine which body is best, then create a new one for him, but it's definitely looking like I'll just have to remove the test subject's brain from the most promising body and replace it with his.

Anyway, I want to get a head start on my post-implantation adaptation tech. I give a test subject nerve endings for an extra arm, then graft one onto them with enough bone and muscle connections to make it theoretically usable. I'm not sure yet whether it'd be better for me to take the muscles and bones from the same body as the arm, or for me to use my healing serum to grow the shouldery bits joining the arm and body. I do whichever should heal faster.

Tomorrow I'll start experimenting on them to get them used to the new arm more quickly. The only difference between someone who knows how to use their arms and someone who doesn't is some changes in their neurons. There has to be a way to push those neurons in the right direction at a faster pace.

Today, in addition to giving that guy an extra arm, I continue to closely monitor the combat bodies, and devote the rest of my time to my perception research.

Today I closely monitor the combat bodies' growth. I split the rest of my time between my research on defense mechanisms and on perception.

I don't know if the "fleshy hellscape" aesthetic is the ideal environment to facilitate my research... but it does remind me of a recurring dream I've been having lately. Potentially not a bad idea.

As for the combat bodies' sizes, when fully grown:
Chimera should be about 250 pounds
Tarantula should be about 400 pounds
Brutus should be about 550 pounds

So I finish Brutus and get it and Tarantula growing before I start on Chimera's cell (Brutus being highest priority). If I finish Chimera's first cell, then I get it into its growth tank as well. If I complete that, then I start working on biological defense mechanisms. I'm thinking of splitting my research on extra body functions into two focuses - one would be hostile defense mechanisms like a jellyfish's stinging cells, while the other focus would be on improved perception, like magnetic field perception (even salmon do it) and echolocation.

I also request that the Company send me assistants with a better work ethic. This isn't some goddamn summer job you can quit because you get tired after a few weeks. We are forging the future of humanity.

Okay, now to find civilization again. If the old trail I followed to these ruins continues past them, I keep following it in case it meets up with a road. If the trail ends here, I trudge into the woods on the opposite side of the ruins.

In the back of my mind I was just starting to think about modified creatures designed for non-combat purposes, but wow, my muse has really outdone herself here. I choose some subjects to turn into these earthworm-like support creatures, then begin the process of growing the combat bodies.

If I have time left, I begin researching additional biological capabilities that could be added to the combat bodies. I'm thinking poison spines, improved vision and light perception (those were some cool shrimp), perhaps even infrared/EM perception... though new senses could be overwhelming. I'll have to test that out on human subjects first.

Let's get that nutrient slurry going!

Situation Report:
Though we still have more than half the allotted time left, I have already pushed the boundaries of science and created things that I am tremendously proud of.

My main project is creating a supersoldier beginning with the body. Currently I have designed three different bodies - effectively new creatures designed chromosomes-up, more specialized for combat than anything nature could create. My immediate plans are to grow them to full size, test their individual capabilities, and then select the most promising to transplant my soldier's brain into. He will then be outfitted with biological defense mechanisms and specialized equipment to make him more dangerous than any human.

I have made other promising discoveries in my research that currently support the supersoldier project in some way, but could be refined for significant benefits in other areas. You have already seen one of these - my healing virus - and I hope the results have impressed you. I have another virus codenamed panacea, which boosts the immune system to superhuman levels and can be used to prevent rejection of donor limbs and organs. Panacea currently creates a dependency in anyone injected, but this could potentially be prevented after further research and modification.

If the Company hires me after this event, I see myself specializing in medical technologies, beginning by perfecting these viruses and potentially creating similar ones. Given how much I've accomplished in my time here so far, I think together we could benefit humanity greatly. I hope you will consider hiring me permanently.

Over and out,
Ivana Rosecrans

It sounds to me like the axe is designed to break itself as it goes through the summoning process. Maybe Big Ears just picked it up when it was 95% completed and now we're at like 98%. When he got the axe he noticed that the seal was weak - maybe he was wrong assuming this was because Saral Caine was using it for evil.

Apples might work. I recently made a crisp out of apples and tart berries and they paired together really well.

Well that was unnerving. Pretty tame compared to what I'm used to, but definitely more than I want to deal with right now.

I find the least bloody parts of my robe and tear them into a bandeau and loincloth for myself. Then I discard the rest. Even if they're still bloody, that's less blood on my person overall.

Egg drop soup is tasty, easy, and uses a lot of eggs.

((You got the chimera correct!))

Today I continue work on my combat bodies, focusing on anatomical changes that seem useful for all three, like improved muscle retention without exercise, or less vulnerable brain placement. Evolution has left me quite a few loose ends to clean up here.

Do you have soy sauce? Olive oil, soy sauce, and spices make a nice basic marinade.

Hm, do I rest more here or try to make my way to civilization first?

I suppose I have no idea where I am or how far I am from anyone else, so I should try to play it safe. I sleep just a little longer.
