My back hurts, my neck hurts, I sprained my wrist on Saturday and aggravated it yesterday. I have work I need to do, but it's mostly stupid.

Avis, your thing looks nice and I would say more but it's really late here and I want to go to bed.

Edit:

Finally as close to done as it will ever be.

Well, Helgo's in... somewhere by the Rhine? Which is in the same country as you, IIRC, at least. :P

Good luck in the tournament. You can do it!

It went more-or-less as expected! Which is to say, I got absolutely b o d i e d. But I learned a whole lot, which is why I was there. In my defence on getting bodied, suffice it to say that the foil tournament included someone who I think is the current national champion, someone who I think used to be the Italian national champion, a whole bunch of people that have fenced internationally before, and the newbies form my club.

The épée tournament, on the other hand, merely pitted us against... the national épée champion (who also happens to lecture my brother in C++, oddly) and another broad assortment of national-level competitors.

I will settle for the fact that I won a bout in both tournaments and only went down 5-0 about three times (out of a lot of bouts).

This week, I'm training some selection of Monday-Thursday; I'm not yet sure how many sessions I'll make it to. The plan is to up my épée game significantly, maaaybe to the point where I can enter the next tournament in three weeks or so with a better chance.

Incidental to your current problem, make sure to look for weird camera lenses second hand and such. There's a good sized community of - for want of a better word - hipster photographers out there that sell lenses and other equipment that aren't commonly sold any more, and a lot of them will happily set you straight on details like that.

Given the state of Necrothreat, I'm going to go on a limb here and say we've never needed a Tech Support- there are only three states of being here. Alive, Dead and Undead. Injured? That just is the moment before you're dead, silly.

I never actually appointed him, but unless he died there should be a Suturer floating around with a whole bunch of med skills enabled. Saved a couple of lives!

Completely unsurprisingly, I'm a fern.

Throwing this one here since I got zilch over in the happy thread. Probably more fitting here anyways. Anywho!

So I found a DSLR camera at the thrift store today yesterday! Picked it up for a song, it's an Olympus from 2006 or 2007 or so. Yeah, it's old, but it came with two batteries and everything seems snappy. I have no lenses and no adapters for it, sadly. Not yet, anyways.

Question, then, is this- It's got 7.6 megapixels or so, but as I understand it, that's mostly affecting resolution more than anything. Will you get finer, more detailed pictures with more resolution, or is there a certain measure of quality outside of resolution that makes a fine picture? Like, I know you can get some cool effects and pictures with various lenses, but my phone's got 15MP just for example. Excluding focal length, FOV, etc etc., is the DSLR going to keep up for taking nice pictures, or is the (relatively) low megapixels kind of damning in this day and age?

Frankly, Olympus is like the only flavor of camera that I haven't been bumping around with- I've got minolta cameras and a lot of Pentax lenses. I've wanted to play around with a DSLR for a while, but I'unno if the follow-up costs for adapters and memory sticks and whatever is going to be worth it if the thing's just obsolete by now.

I don't think that'll make too much of a difference. You'll still get images at pretty high pixel count (although I can't be bothered to do the maths properly, I think it should be order of 3k x 2.3k or therabouts), and that's all the megapixel count matters for. You won't be selling A3 prints, but it'll look fine on a screen.

The size of the sensor and the quality of the bits of glass you stick in front of it make a lot more difference (not to mention the quality of the person behind the camera). DSLR cameras have a much larger sensor than cellphone cameras and much, much better lenses, which is why people still take potato phone pictures with their ultrasuperHDest cameras.

Should be called Arx. There might only be two, actually. I know there were enough that my ghost killed me. :P

I'm not a big fan of the in-ear earbuds for out-and-about listening, but I do find the quality better than flat buds. Quite a bit more bass. They're also better isolating. They do fall out all the time, though, fully agree.

Well, almost two hours straight on the piste this evening. Open evening at the best club in the city, which meant that half the time I was fencing against people my level, half the time I was fencing against international level players and trying to learn while getting bodied hard. :P

I did get some nice pointers, though, and I'm steadily improving. Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, we'll see how it goes!
