General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: March 15, 2014, 01:18:42 pm »
So the other day I was on the bus to class. It's been warming up, and the ice on the river had started cracking up and floating downstream. As we're driving over the river, I see a flash of red, and look closer. There, bobbing merrily along, is a fire extinguisher frozen halfway into a block of ice in the middle of a river.
Gold, man. Things like this always make me wonder. For example, near my house, there's a high-hanging wire. On the wire, there are several pairs of running shoes, all tied to each other by their shoelaces. Were they thrown like bolas? Did the guy climb the pylon? One end of the wire is attached to the corner of a nine-story house's roof. Maybe he slid the boots down from it? It's awesome, I think.
Often used to indicate there's a drug dealer there, at least where I come from.

Seriously? Okay, but that doesn't remove the question of how he got them there. I mean, it's a real high wire. Like, seven meters. May I inquire where exactly is it used to indicate the presence of a drug dealer? I'm in a not-very-druggy neighborhood, AFAIK.
That was Johannesburg, South Africa - not the worst place in the world, but not civilisation's peak either. I guess if whoever threw them had a good arm they could have maybe whirled them like bolas?

Now that I think of it, that might not be half as cute to see as the single, large spider you currently have. The small ones always make me afraid they're going to end up hiding somewhere unexpected, and I'll find them at the worst possible time.

Hmm. how do people change the name of spoilers. Anyway spoilered for the more arachnophobic:

In other news, one of my brother's friends is in his maths class; but said friend is from ~5 years ago, on the other side of the country.

I never tried jiggling them... I'll try that out.

General Discussion / Re: Why do so many people write "rediculous?"
« on: March 14, 2014, 01:52:44 pm »
The use of two full stops instead of three for an ellipsis is one of the many things that rile me up. It's even in the Windows update screen.

The apostrophes are just pain. Pain served in neat, one-character sized packages. Take the ones you're putting in unnecessary places and put them where you've left them out. It's that easy!

It feels really good to be back on form, academically. Reminding myself of all my old standards and sticking to them is quite rewarding, as is finishing 200 Kumon worksheets in 6 days.

collab
David & Leigh Eddings, yeah. Don't think the lady ever wrote.
I think David eventually decided that Leigh helped enough with the worldbuilding, etc. that she should be listed as co-author. I still think of them as written by David Eddings though. Or just Eddings.

I'm deadpan when reading, unless something funny happens. Then I smile, or possibly laugh.

Also Khan Academy is awesome.

The Warrior, the Paladin and the Thief basic designs for my game. I love pixelly styles, so...

Critise it, I need to get better!
Your knight is incapable of bending over if his breastplate looks like that; they'd normally have either a wasp waist and articulation over the hips, or a

which I can't be bothered to describe.

Looks pretty good if I don't let the armour nerd hiding in my head nitpick it, though. Bauglir has good advice.

Spoiler: Flowerhatted Spider! (click to show/hide)

I know there's a spider thread, but it makes me happy, so I'm posting it here.

We have achieved short duration cryostasis in pigs, if I remember correctly.

I think this is a happy.

Or touching, or something.

Bleh. I'm bad with emotional words.

German has strange grammar, from the perspective of English. Grammatical gender does not necessarily match biological gender. Apples are male; milk is female; bread is neuter; girls are neuter too.

As for bad parent, yes, her Ex is being an asshole. I suppose her divorcing him is my fault in a way, an action of mine lead to her meeting someone who is her soul-mate. (And an awesome guy.)
That's not a fault, that's a good thing.

For my sad, inconvenience is your calculator packing up in the middle of a physics exam.
Absolutely terrifying is the way LibreOffice misrenders fancy Word formatting; It displayed a graph with the line (only the line; the axes, etc. were fine) running perpendicular to the way it should have.

The frictional force opposing a force on a static object is given by the formula
f = μs*N
where μs is the static friction coefficient, and N is the normal force.

The normal force is equal to the component of the object's weight perpendicular to the surface it's on; thus on a flat surface
N = m*g;

and on an incline
N = (m*g)sin or cosθ.
depending on the direction of the incline, I think.

Therefore, the coin with the lesser mass will slide first; more detail can't be given with that much information.

I would have responded sooner, but I was busy writing a test on almost exactly this topic...

Detail edited in!
