Rock birth control is surprisingly ineffective.

Why did my doctor just use an incredibly expensive strand of an incredibly expensive blue metal to suture a minor leg injury (read:near removal) instead of using the nice, happy spider-infested batch I had next to it?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Necromancy

I can *ALMOST* confirm that undead, considering the changes to evil biomes as a whole, will now only be alied the person who raised them, as well as other undead risen to that master.

I have no idea how this will work with other necromancers, but I will say that necromancer nobles will spawn undead that still murder the rest of your civilization.

Here's the thing: Based on how small/large your world is, setting the end year to a time above 200 can cause you to have next to zero notable animals because they all die. Making it too short, however, will make all notable animals/titans incredibly weak and an uneventful fight for an experienced adventurer. The only way I can see that it's possible to make strong megabeasts is to sacrifice the amount of civilizations you have so they do not kill everything off.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Blunt weapons - OP or not?

Although I'm not sure if it's actually a Blunt weapon, the whip is INCREDIBLY OP. More often than once, I've severed spinal tissue/broken the spine on the first successful neckshot.

Masterwork DF / What race would be the 'easiest' to start out as?
« on: November 30, 2014, 08:51:30 pm »
Before It's asked, I do have experience with dwarves in vanilla. I've made a couple of multi-year, 100+ forts (all of which have promptly been slaughtered when my sheriff goes to sleep during a riot or something), and I'm not entirely sure that simply restarting dwarf mode in Masterwork would be in my best interests. It does look quite a bit more complex, and I'm unsure if it would be the best experience for me to simply be a dwarf (unless, of course, It would be necessary for me to understand the rest of the mod.)

As well, I'd like to know if this mod adds a lot to Adventure mode, or if the only addition is indirect from the new races/creatures.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / "Night Mate Spearman"?
« on: November 22, 2014, 11:27:00 pm »
Today I was adventuring with my legendary wrestler when, after entering a town to see what I could get with the thousands of coins I carried, I was ambushed after falling asleep in someone's home. I was confused, considering that homes are supposed to be safe places to sleep, when all of the sudden, the 'undead' tile set (the 'N' with the tilde over it.) ran into the home.

I immediately engaged in combat with the creature, after noticing it's name; Night Mate Spearman. I was confused, considering that it was literally just a spearman, same clothes and all, but it was considered undead. I figured it was a vampire and proceeded to attack.

The people in the home woke up after about two turns, and I let one of the stupid ones run in front of me while I sorted through my backpack for my knife. The spearman annihilated the villager in only two turns, but I had my weapon.

I engaged in a wrestling hold on the spearman's weapon, jostling it from him. It scratched and bit me, however, I was too powerful for it; I began to stab it forcefully in the head, knowing that vampires don't go down easily.

I was incredibly shocked when, after getting a message that I had 'Bruised the Brain' with my hit, the spearman broke free from my hold and proceeded to punch in the head, causing the 'severed part to fly off in an arc!'

I stared at the screen for a moment in utter confusion.  First of all, I know that vampires CAN be killed by brain damage (or, more so, they used to be.), and vampires also aren't supposed to get special names; It's just their human name. As well, I've never seen a vampire strong enough to cause an insta-death from a punch, unless they were buffed massively.

Was this just some odd creature of procedural generation? Or is something around that I really, really need to look out for?

Interesting to note, my compainions didn't seem to care at all when I drank the blood of a dying bandit.

However, when I turned over to put one of our fallen comrades 'out of their misery', they attacked immediately. Odd.

(Also, as a vampire, you have an incredible resistance to pain; I once lost all of my limbs and had nervous damage in the spine and was still able to push the werebeast to death. I had to succumb immediately after, though, as I couldn't move.)

I was recently attacked by a lone woman while my adventurer was sleeping. She had a carving knife, however, when I pulled out a knife of my own (prepared to take a trophy), she responded with "is that a weapon, what's going on here?"

I was quite a bit confused, considering she had the knife out and she was trying to attack me, and I was even more confused when, as I attempted to defend myself, the prompt came up if I REALLY wanted to attack the person, as if I was attacking an innocent that did nothing.

I decided to throw way my knife (at her leg, of course.) and wrestled her down, choking her until she suffocated. I then proceeded to remove all of her clothes and leave her to die in the frozen wastes (the stupid lady deserved it.)

Well, when I left the area and went back to my [T]ravel page, I was instantly attacked by another bandit. This time, I prepared my weapon... And was met by the exact same person! She never put her clothes back on and never got her weapon, but she still nearly broke my arm while I tried to peacefully incapacitate her again, the whole time yelling about how I had attacked HER.

Is there a way to take out lone bandits short of ripping them to shreds? I honestly felt no need to murder this lady; Chances are, she was a simple peasant who needed money and decided to attack an adventurer with a carving knife. I know that restraining enemies is something Toady is looking into, but in the meantime, is there a way to stop violence without the need for more violence?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Can you aim throws?
« on: May 31, 2014, 01:14:22 pm »
As in, wrestling throws?

On that topic, can you hit enemies with their thrown comrades?

I wanted to start them with Adventure, so they could see that it was fun, and I kept telling him that fortress mode was really, really cool because you could do the same awesome combat, but with a lot more people.

He got hit by a random ambush and died while walking to his first mission. Told me the game was stupid, and refuses to play it to this day.

A pesky vampire woman has killed three adventurers of mine, one of which that was a legendary maceman. (well, she didn't have that much shield experience at all, hence the death, but still).

I'm wondering... Do whips cause extreme pain? Or do they just murder people? Because I'm pretty sure you can crush skulls with them, although I've never actually used them much.

Here's something fun to do.

I usually play as an outsider anyways for the cool little 'wildlife' sort of experience, so I would suggest training with only knives or spears. Although hammers are arguably the best weapon for fighting the big guys, you will probably have extreme difficulty getting there anyways.

Basically...

1. Train throwing a bunch

2. Train sneak a bunch

3. Run circles around a bandit camp whilst in stealth, finding a good spot to come out (Close to legendary ambusher, you will literally be able to run up to them before they can find you)

4. Start chucking your knives like Katarina.

With a bit of luck and good positioning, you will be able to cripple the archers before they can fire, and if you have enough speed you can kite the rest whilst stabbing. Most bandits lack proper armor, and if your spear is made of decent material you can get a good stab on their arm/leg and keep them from doing anything to you. You're going to need a bunch of knives, though, so you may need to knock off some peasants.

Of course, you can also just wrestle neutral wildlife enough so you can sprint in your iron armor. (Fun fact, a crab once killed me because I payed no attention as I was wrestling it and it wrecked my eyes.)
