Forget the vessel, do a terraforming station and tow it there. You can even strap hab modules to kickstart the colony.

Forget the vessel, drop installations and enough population to kick start economic trade, let the private sector profit of delivering infrastructure, works better if you have captured some planet so you can drop them as slave, imperial population complains a lot
How many terraforming installations you talking about?  Even at 10 mil, which is considered a full fledge colony, you'll be running about 20 installations.  That's the number I put in my smallest terraformers.  50 to 100 is my average when it comes to terraformer platforms, that and I build 3 and they almost always work together.

Also don't attack with your starter fortress, leave it to gather resources while you go and fight.

And yeah, the fastest way to kill enemy early is to use light weapons to cripple movement then get on board and use a weapon to take out the AI core and other things until the ship dies.  You'll know when a vehicle dies when you get a giant wave of green sparkles heading towards you.  Those sparkles are the resources the ship was made from.

The main problem is illegitimately getting gems to use in the auction, for none steam inventory products.  Ones that do have a actual value outside just steam and valve.

And the gem market has crashed, literally.

Also is anyone else getting a sinking feeling this may become like MS points and become a new controlled currency?

My biggest complaint about SotS2 was the whole fleet management system, way to complicated, way to many steps, way to much time wasted.  I didn't mind that you designed fleet build orders, but the tediousness of sending fleets to do anything just got to me quickly.  To do anything you had to select the target destination, choose a mission type, choose a fleet in range that had the ability to do the chosen mission, choose the fleet, and then select any applicable secondary choice (what station to build, fleet to target).  Repeat that, over and over and over just to explore.  God forbid the fleet you WANT to send is to far away, so you need to select one of your colonies that is in range and do a re-base mission.  It quickly became a mess.

This was opposed to, you know, just choosing a fleet and then clicking a destination and telling me when they arrived so I could then give them their next order.  No need for a screen change to a different UI that provided NO INFO.

No way to set mineral deposits to be infinite, but you can edit the deposits with SM on while using the system view (F9) screen.

Honestly using SM to learn the game is perfectly fine.  You have to use it to set up a non-earth start anyway, which is what I do every game.  Haven't done a Sol system start in forever.

There are few unlocks and weird ones.  Like the launcher size reduction tech leads to box launchers (small but can only be reloaded in a hanger or at a planet with enough maint-facilitys), the different ground forces lead into different ones (basically you got ones that are good at defense, offence, or both then the heavier versions that are just stronger), and the progression for engines and reactors goes engine->reactor->engine->reactor for the most part.

Actually lasers do a VERY sharp spear, at around 10 damage the profile goes from a single line to a wider line.  I've one shot ships with a 40+ damage laser before, and captured another that survived a shot and that's when I learned that my laser wasn't doing a single line of damage anymore.

Particle beams do a much shallower version of the same spear.

Missiles do a perfect pyramid, so every square is a new layer.

Also microwave guns do triple damage to shields and then ignore armor like mesons, but unlike mesons they only damage electronics.  Microwaves can easily blind ships and render them defenseless but intact.

Also Gauss don't need power plants, while the rest all need power supplied as good as their capacitor rating.

Biology unlocks genetic engineering, which lets you turn a population of one race into a modified version.  You research the steps similar to other things.  Honestly it's not that great for anything other than RP to me, because the cost/time investment in making a race that can survive way outside your own races norms is way to much compared to making a transformer fleet.

Edit: Also the reason your ground survey team isn't doing anything is because you need to use a geo-survey ship first.

Expect to fail, and don't be afraid to give yourself stuff to fix mistakes.

Maybe this is what it means to get old, and feel pretty disenfranchised from popular culture. I just can't really get into it anymore. The bombast just makes me want to laugh, and the amount of crap that's on your screen just makes me not to want play. I'm not really reserving this for CoD anymore either. I used to really like Battlefield and played it up to....hell I don't even know what version it's now. But sorta the same story. Ranking up. Unlocks. Perks. Kill streaks. Eh. I used to really like these things and the whole presentation, but of the last 3 or 4 years, I just don't get into it like I used to. I think I'm kinda waiting on the next evolution of shooters to get back into it again, because I want something fresh, not the desperately rehashed and re-used gameplay of the last 8 to 10 years.
Shooters in the last few years (at least CoD, BF is heading this way faster and faster) have gone the same direction that sports video games did over 15 years ago.  Yearly releases that feature one major game change and a few minor ones, changes that at times are cool and others that seem like step backwards in fun/playability.  Feature changes that have to have been thought of years before that are in a populated list that get chosen to "change up" the next release.  You'll probably see minor change that were well received in one release make it into the next, but don't expect major changes because by the time that years product is released the next one is already well into production.

I'm sitting here watching this all happen while I play my $15 games made by small teams who actually want to make a unique product and have fun.

While i still have troubles with some game mechanics (despite having built many farms, famine strikes often and i didn't really built that many troops, then plagues strikes a turn after) i'm starting to enjoy it more and more.
Are you spacing out your resource harvesting buildings?  They need space around them selves to produce and if that space is occupied by a city it loses output.  Overcrowding of harvesters can kill output REAL fast.  Harvesters use the hexes up to two away, so keep that space clear.

Also this thread makes me want to play again, need to try and take Earth again.  Last time the 3 front landing plan went pretty well, took the shield base and was able to use that to start building more units to support the 2-3 bulk transports full of troops and tanks landing each turn.

It's funny to me that they are going back to revisit the Horus Heresy so much right now, especially since I know someone who was affected by it hugely when they introduced the whole event.

My dad played 40k in the epic scale before it was called epic scale, it was THE scale to play at the time.  On a square base the same size as a normal troop today you had 5 tiny little guys representing a squad.  The games scale was close to all the other major/minor war games out at the time it was just that 40k was the big sci-fi one at the time, and was actually originally made to try and compete against Battletech with pure titan battles but they introduced infantry and armor rather quickly.  He had(has) a pretty big collection, an Ork and Eldar army, a excessively long Squat train and his massive space marine army.  His army of marines and their armor was just shy of his combined Ork and Eldar collection.

The thing is my dad liked purple so he played his marines as a Emperors Children chapter, you can kind of see where this is going.  He played for a few years and then the Horus Hersey happened(2nd ed).  His army went from being the good guys following the emperor to being part of the new renegades.  He's still pissed.

but we need a low tech solution to fight biters.

power armor isn't effective until you can put much exoskeletons in it, and if you get a resource shortage with large spawn you are basically doomed.
Except that, as it is, the tank is your low, mid and high tech solution.  It out classes a player in modular armor or even mk1 power armor, probably mk2 as well.  The tank cannon is stronger and dosn't slow you down like a rocket launcher.

The low tech solution is piercing ammo smg with lots of grenades.  That served me quite well in previous versions.
I just used the tank to walkdrive through a major hub of large biters and came out with 140 artifacts and it only cost me 160 tank rounds and a few repair tools.
