I am halfway through Opal, and everything is stable thus far.  I believe the problem was a wayward tree attempting to grow through a constructed floor.  The offender was dispatched, and I am now further along than when the crash occurred.  Unfortunately, this means the courtyard either can't have trees, or the floor must be built around them.  This is probably manageable for the inner trees, long as we're careful.

If NCommander is still interested (and the save remains stable), the Fortress passes to him for a year come Spring.  If nobody else wants a crack at it, I will resume after him.  This is not explicitly a succession game, I just thought it would be fun to have readers occasionally don the purple hat of leadership :)  Stay tuned!

Build a magma pit in such a way that you can both drop prisoners in, and use it to power forges.

Turn the forest to matchsticks and pave over everything?
Unfortunately not an option yet.  I have only recently begun manufacturing magma-safe pump parts.  Does anyone know if there is a DFHack command to remove a block or item?  The crash is happening about a week after loading my last save, not nearly enough time to chop the likely culprits by hand.

To clarify, if a tree grows under an existing floor, that is sufficient to crash?  If so, how do I permanently slay the offender?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Tips for beginners?

There are several utilities which I personally consider invaluable time-savers.  First and foremost amongst them is 'Quick Fort'.  It allows you to design, furnish, and designate a large set of rooms in one go.  Takes a lot of the tedium out of the initial setup.  As for tips; DF is the quintessential 'make your own entertainment' game.  You have all of the tools, but you need to set your own goals; super efficient minecart transport for both Dwarves & industry, drain the Cavern lake above ground to create an artificial surface lake, military consists entirely of leather-clad elite wrestlers, etc.

I'm wondering if there are any usual suspects I can check.  On a related note; if I retire the Fortress, will the world still be ok for future Forts & Adventures?

Both of my backup saves are corrupted :(  If anyone has experience with save restoration, you are welcome to try.  Otherwise, I'm afraid Aranas must be retired.  I really like this world however, and I am hopeful it will function with a new Fortress or Adventure.  Maybe a succession game?

Bad news, I have encountered a rather persistent crash :(  Gonna try a backup save from the start of Winter, but I have zero experience diagnosing or treating this situation.

You can take a single tile of water and move it from statue to statue with pumps:
Code: [Select]
Ω++Ω   .%%.
++++   %..%
++++   %..%
Ω++Ω   .%%.

Z+0    Z+1
I'm not sure that qualifies as simpler, lol.  Definitely more Dwarfy though :p

That's the way I have always built my mist generators, don't know of any simpler method.  Sometimes I need floor grates around the statue to drain any run-off, but nothing significant.  However, I have never dealt with such a massive water source before, hence my query.

1466
Say for example, I am harnessing the ocean for my amusement.  Is there ever a case where the force of a downpour would not completely dissipate when dropped atop a statue?

S'all good, variety is the spice and all that :)  I'll pm you with the details once I finish this year.

I'll take a turn. I'll even livestream it if there's any interest.
I would actually be interested to see the live play of my little beach enclave.  I have a few months left, you can start Spring of 125.  Given how quickly The Barbarity of Ivy moved against the Mountainhome, you might even get a siege during your turn.  If not them, then probably the Elves once they see the latest tree slaying campaign :D  Plus there's still the issue of cleansing the caverns, as the excess of zombies seems to prevent anything else from spawning (haven't seen in a Unicorn in 1&1/2 years now).

Since they are friendly, the only way to cage them is by dropping them onto the trap.  From there... hmm.  Can you chain up friendlies?  Would be pretty funny to have a guard kangaroo.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: May 11, 2015, 10:23:55 am »
There are clothes on the ground all around the fort...what.

Dwarves try to replace their old, rotten clothing with new clothing. But instead of just going to the stockpile to pick it up, they drop their rotten clothing on the ground when the job starts and run (potentially naked) to the stockpile to pick up the new clothes.
Several sections of my palisade are paved with socks, while the new Well carries the unique flavor of ☼Pig Tail Robe☼.
