Heh, spring's stuff (and I guess by extension Zero-K), planetary annihilation, mostly. There's a few with similar playstyle.
I remember Planetary Annihilation.  Could never quite get into it, but I do appreciate what it offered for an RTS.
It's still quite popular, for an RTS. I think most people here probably 'remember' it because they still play it. I love it, there's not quite another RTS I can think of which has a similar scale.
Nice!  I do want to assemble a team for semi-regular practice.  Not talking super pro, but I definitely want to get better, and eventually have some fun in pubs.

This is one of those games that I've spent more time watching videos than actually playing, though not for lack of trying.  Anyone else remember this game?  Still has a pretty active community, and having a team of Dorfs to go pub-stomping with would be nice.

I am enjoying the series as well.
Glad I'm not the only one! :D

Might as well let ya'll know as well, the comments section is a goldmine of story analysis. I've been active for a hot minute there under the handle Fern, and I imagine some of you fine folk might be active around there as well.
For sure.  I do wish the chapters had tags so I could actually go back and find stuff.  **Book V discussion ahead, for those not caught up**  For example, I vaguely know the name Nauk, but don't recall much about him.  Would be nice if I could easily find his screen time from the War College or the first battles.  Similarly with Abigail, I want to reread her fight against the Fae, and when she infamously (if unjustly) earned the reputation for eating them, lol.

Edit: As an aside, V Interlude I is the first time we've see what manifestations of Night (staff, crows) can do to mortals, if only in passing.  Back in the Everdark, Rumena had mentioned that staring at pure Night as Catherine did would have made normal folks go crazy in a second, while she only got a headache.

In the Jan. 24 Dev log, you mentioned a lot of bug fixing.  Have you found and/or fixed anything related to the Stress system?  Is there anything we can do to help with that issue?  Like making specific scenario test forts and uploading them.  I thought of this again because my current Fort had a Dwarf with maximum happiness (DFHack cheat) become depressed in a single tick after viewing a pool of Horrid Sludge.

Kinda surprised this doesn't have a thread here, though to be fair, I only learned about it from a random DF Reddit post a couple months ago.  Anyone else follow this story?  https://practicalguidetoevil.wordpress.com/table-of-contents/

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: A Waterfall For Every Bedroom

But really, the mist giving happy thought can be accomplished by setting it on a spot where all traffic will come by it, e.g. central stairs.
So, there is no need to have multiple waterfall generating mists, when 1 mist generator can satisfy the give mist/waterfall happy thought.
That's like saying 'we don't actually need magma cannons when a cage trap works just fine' :P  I'm more curious to find out if mist will interrupt a Dorf's sleeping, and if happy thoughts can be created while sleeping.

General Discussion / Ready Player One: How would it work IRL?
« on: January 20, 2019, 11:29:41 am »
Just rewatched the movie, and it got me thinking about how we might actually pull off something like.  These are all the issues I can think of, in order of importance; (and in case you were wondering, I am super drunk on a lazy Sunday)

Economy: How would anyone make money from this game?  First is the companies who engineer the hardware.  Beyond that, I'm not sure.  The game appears to be free, so even with stock market value & other investors, what does Gregarious Games offer to justify that investment?  The only thing I can think of is the game's Coins function as a cryptocurrency, which can be exchanged for real world money, and by extension food & housing.  However, this raises the specter of corruption and 'gold farming'.  If a cryptocurrency achieved that level of societal acceptance, it would certainly face government oversight and abuse.

Exploitation: We've seen that 'bot nets' are possible, if only practical on a corporate+ scale.  We're told that everybody starts the same.  If every new 'life' generates a small amount of Coin (effectively new money), what is to prevent a government-run effort of rapidly creating and killing new accounts/lives, and harvesting the resulting Coin?  Inflation would make the real world value of Coins next to nothing in less than a month.  Even assuming a less than 100% transfer rate, say 5% of the victim's total, you're still constantly creating money faster than new players come into being.  I have no answers here, only more questions about how user accounts actually work.

User Accounts: I'm completely at a loss here.  The biggest paradox in this area is when Artemis logs in using an IOI connection.  She retains her avatar, but still gets an IOI suit and gear?  Does this mean that the player account and the connection used are separate entities?  We know that modding is possible, but I don't know of any IRL way to achieve something like this.  If they are separate entities, how would Gregarious Games verify that each person is unique, in order to prevent the aforementioned gold farming?

Modding: We've seen that it's possible to create new things in the game, modify existing things, and create a new space.  How would this work?  Literally every player and their mother would want to make their very own virtual Minecraft realm, to say nothing of other games.  The logistics of maintaining a system like this is mind-boggling.  Even in modern games, systems for player housing remains primitive at best.

Ok, that's all I've got for now.  /rant

I've forgotten most of doctor who sadly, besides the really memorable stuff like the bitch fight at canary wharf ;]
Oh gods, I am in tears from laughing.  Thank you for making me aware of this.

I think Clara had potential early on, but I also lost favor with her when she kept getting crazy plot points thrown on her.  Like, she became too special for her own good.  Even Wilfred didn't overstay his welcome, despite him & Donna being central to their respective arcs.

Mmmm....  No, doesn't help.  Hang on, it just clicked. This is like the "while" (until) vs "while" (during)  cross-purpose*, you meant "until/up-to-but-not-including" rather than "so far/to date".
Right.  Since in my OP I was not favorable of the current season, 'up to this point' implies the exclusion of that season.  Yeah, language is weird.

To clarify, I have thoroughly enjoyed the series up to this point.
'This point', implied to be the most recent season.

General Discussion / Re: ♪ The Great Music Thread ♫
« on: January 14, 2019, 07:01:38 pm »
I'm trying to find a song by Rush, and it eludes me.  The music video was released within the last ~5 years, and it's not Mystic Rhythms.  I'm completely blanking on the details, but I know it was more upbeat hard rock than their traditional stuff.  I think it was a new song in and of itself, definitely in the 21st century.  Edit: It's not Clockwork Angels. I vaguely recall the video having some concert footage in it. I think.

328
To clarify, I have thoroughly enjoyed the series up to this point.  Even Capaldi had a fair share of memorable moments.  Nothing against Whittaker's acting; I think that anyone who took up the role of Doctor at this point would be struggling.  There is very little the cast can do when the writers have run out of ideas.  I daresay that is the reason why they chose to have no multi-episode stories now, under the excuse of making the show more accessible to a wider audience.

329
I feel like the show has slowly but steadily been running out of ideas.  The turnover rate is such that we've had half the number of Doctors in the past decade that the original series did over 50 years.  Capaldi's last Christmas special really hit this home for me.  I loved that episode, but seemed like a very obvious 'we can't think of anything, let's pull some classic story to keep things going'.  Whittaker's first season was just one adventure after another, there was no intrigue at all.  Worse, that was effectively intentional, as the writers have confirmed they were getting rid of multi-episode stories; everything is a 1-shot.  Mind you, I'm not disparaging Whittaker.  I think she's doing the best with what she's been given.  Just unfortunate that the first lady Doctor came in at a time when the show has been noticeably losing steam.
