That's all well and good, but GCS aren't exactly easily acquired resources themselves. Also leaves the problem of webslinging FBs. Any ideas for them?

In my current fort, lacking other things to do, I've decided to make a zoo with as many nasty, dangerous creatures as I can possibly fit into it. What's the best way to capture [TRAPAVOID] beasties to put on display? My plan was to bait one into a trap using a bit of artifact furniture, surround it with cage traps, then render it unconscious somehow. Problem is, I don't know how to do this without maiming the critter and killing it, ruining the whole point of capture.

Yeah, I know that. My 34.11 attack pattern was going for the feet (or legs, depending on which was easier to hit) until I wounded one, then hands to remove any weapons, then the remaining foot, then whatever I felt like. I just can't understand why I get hit so many times despite the fact that I'm attacking while opponents are recovering and I *should* be much, much faster.

Every single fight, I get owned. Enemies seem to move and attack faster than me no matter what, even if I'm an elf with superelven agility and basically no encumbrance. I'll basically miss every single attack for a few rounds, get chipped, and then get a page or so of goblins hacking me to death. I was decent in 34.11, but this newer version beats my ass every time. Anyone have any tips for me?

So, if I had dwarves, and defined a caste with a different body detail plan (say three arms, for whatever reason) and different length/broadness/body size. Would that overwrite the previous definitions, or give the "fractal limbs" effect?

Ignoring the part where I determine which attributes should come from which race, what hybrids to make, etc; how do I mod in hybrid races/mostly unrelated species to the same CREATURE entry? I know you have to use castes, but I'd prefer to do the smallest number of modifications to the base creature. The reason I'm hesistant is that I'm not just adding or removing individual parts; each critter will have different bodily dimensions, different MAXAGEs, etc. Do I have to go all the way to defining the creature over and over in each individual caste?

A working example would be nice.

It's worth mentioning that you'll need to fill in certain missing noble positions if you want any race to be anything near playable. Most notably: chief medical X, militia commander, expedition leader, manager, and bookkeeper. In additions, most races don't have a huge variety of allowed professions; I think elves have like 6? Plus, missing weapons and such.

So one enemy Speardwarf died then my ___lords started murdering each other.

EDIT: Looks like it stopped when the spearmaster killed the axelord. Now I'm down one of each weapon except hammer lords, because the spearmaster is pale.

So, I danger-roomed a squad of militia. After the station order ended, they all went off-duty. I fixed the training orders for the other squad (non-danger-roomed; they're marksdwarves) and they did the same. During a siege.


EDIT: I guess they were hungry or something? They went back to being military after they walked over to the stockpile.

I'm actually letting the fishermen fish, this time. It's going pretty well.

Related: also built my first well below the river; last time I flooded half the fortress because I forgot that water pressure was a thing.

Edit: a High Master Carpenter entered a strange mood. Kind of a waste; was hoping I'd get a smith mood at some point.
