Ooooooohhhh, a gem setter in a strange mood.

Dear Urist McStonemason

Do not engage giant creatures by headbutting them or doing whatever the hell it was you did. RUN AWAY.

aaaand now the elves are pissed.

IT'S CRYSTAL GLASS, CALM YOUR TITS.
EDIT: A giant louse killed my stonecrafter. A shearer suffocated somewhere, and I don't know how or why.

Dear Urist McMason,

Please do not construct walls in the only order that could possibly result in you being trapped inside them.

Secretive mood, a milker claimed a jeweller's shop. Also, 5 of my dwarves decided to take a nap next to the river.

I hope you're not in a crocodile-friendly biome!  Do you have enough beds?

No crocs, (no real hostile creatures in general; I'm in a good biome and no goblinite shipments have arrived yet.), but I think all of my beds are claimed. I'm building a dorm right now.

Aaannd he made... a bucket. Skinnedship the Routed Legend is a bloodstone bucket. It menaces with spikes of bloodstone.

A wave of migrants just doubled my fort population.

The elves have arrived; shall I deal fairly with them, or kill them and take their stuff with my (armorless, shieldless, poorly trained) marksdwarves?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mountain Top Removal Excavation

I've heard it said that bronze is actually "better" than iron in the current version (though of course steel is the best normal material).

Bronze was better than Iron in real life. The advantage in moving to an Iron-based military economy was that Iron ores were literally dozens of times more common than Tin ores (required for Bronze)... so you could equip a military force dozens of times larger, with weapons and armor that were almost as good as Bronze equipment.

If you are short of Steel (for instance, if it is only available from Caravans and Goblinite), give preference to using it for edged weapons (Axes) and Helmets. The rest of your Armor can be made of inferior materials, while Silver is very nearly as good as Steel for blunt weapons and for Crossbow Bolts.

Iron was lighter and held an edge better, iirc.

1. Dwarf Therapist disconnects whenever the map isn't loaded. Try pressing the "connect to DF" button (located in the top left).

Doesn't work. The program behaves as if Dwarf Fortress isn't running at all.

I also meant to ask a couple more questions.
1. I downloaded Dwarf Therapist, and it worked for a little while, then stopped being able to connect to DF. Any advice?
2. Are there any mods that streamline production at all? I want to make glass, but first I need sand, which needs bags, which need cloth, which needs stuff to make into cloth, at the right workshop . . .

This is. . . simply amazing.

DF Gameplay Questions / My first fortress. Tips/Advice?

Well, not my first. I gave up on my first two after I accidentally had my miners dig themselves into inescapable holes (they refused to make stairways out). This one hasn't experienced a lot of fun yet, since it's only in the second year.

I'll attach the file so you can actually see the fort.

Issues that I've noticed:
-There seems to be an issue with the farms. None of them seem to be producing crops; am I just missing them, or are my seeds vanishing?
-I've pretty much got no defensive plan. I sort of tried to make a moat, but that particular project didn't really leave the ground.
-Related to the first issue; I'm out of booze!
-My dining room doesn't seem to be large enough, despite having enough tables/chairs for a good 2/3 of my population, if not more.
-Whenever people go to drink, they get interrupted by sparrow men, even though they don't appear hostile.
