I used therapist when I first started playing DF, but for a few weeks was having problems where DT wouldn't connect (turned out to be a race condition, which was solved by writing a script to open both in the proper order...) and was forced to learn the in-game way to do it...and now, I use it almost more than DT. DT is handy when I get a new wave of migrants and want to quickly see who has what skills (military, etc.) but my issue is that I can't see the dwarves' relationships in it. So even if I find someone who looks good for my military, I still have to go back to DF and check their family (I try not to enlist anyone with a spouse or kids at least early on in a fort) and then add them to the military.
One note on changing jobs for dwarves - shift enter turns on/off all labors in a category, so it makes it easy to, say, make a hauler. Or not a hauler. And if anyone dares idle, I just go in and give them more work to do. It takes a little bit, but it does prevent me from having the 50 idlers issue...because even when I had over 150 dwarves, I only ever had idlers in the single digits.
I did start playing with a tileset, though, and have never had to learn the ascii. I'm not sure if I'll just wait on installing the new release or if I'll just bite the bullet and try to learn it all at once (hopefully once the major bugs have been resolved). We'll see...I want to let my current fort come to its natural end (we're down to 25 beards and haven't had a wave of migrants in FOREVER...I did just disallow all jobs for my mayor, though, so he has conducted meetings...) and try an evil biome, since I've only ever done easy ones.
