DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: 1x1 bedroom is enough?
« on: March 10, 2015, 03:03:05 pm »
Yes, you can cram an engraved room full of beds amd make each one its own maxsize bedroom... but that's just not fun for RP. If I want my dwarves to get royal bedroom happiness boosters, I challenge myself t give them royal bedrooms. It does cost a lot more in platinum than the more exploity route though. Basically if I were doing a megaproject or utility fort of some kind I would do the communal "bedrooms," but for proper fort forts it seems wrong.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Shield material revisited
« on: March 10, 2015, 02:52:07 pm »
Worth noting that at the moment, weapons stuck in an enemy can't be twisted around, and so dwarves will shield bash instead. My spear master's combat reports are all stab, firmly stuck, pull unsuccessfully, bash bash bash bash, pull unsuccessfully, bash bash, pull successfully, repeat. So particularly for swords and spears, heavier shields are probably better.

Even tiny undead are terrifying opponents, and will kill dwarves with ease. I'm talking reanimated chickens' feet here. And they will eventually get pulped and become permanently useless.... but I guess acquiring new reanimable corpses is no great issue for any healthy fort.

Just be careful, because my experience with undead is eiher that you curbstomp them or a single undead goblin kills 15 fully armoured soldiers.

PS do your kids just obey the burrow restrictions? I remember that mine in the previous version completely ignored them. If they don't, then hoe do you get them all in the daycare?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwaren eugenics
« on: March 10, 2015, 02:22:21 pm »
Well according to Toady, attribute caps are inherited, therefore eugenics are theoretically possible. When I finally get time to actually do some testing on my turkeys, I'll defibrillate http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=148536.msg6038125#msg6038125 with results.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: River as natural defense?

I recommend a 2z deep moat with water on the lowest level. That way hey have to be able to both swim and climb to get through. Make it at least 4 tiles wide too.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Performance. What to expect?
« on: March 08, 2015, 12:29:52 pm »
DF is playable right down to 15 calculation FPS. Setting your graphical FPS cap in your init settings to 10 will seriously help your calculation FPS, without negatively affecting anything for you.

Also, core count is completely irrelevant when playing DF, at least past twin-cores. DF isn't multi-threaded, so a single core with a higher clock speed is much better than a quad-core with a lower clock speed per core, so in some cases an i5 is actually better than an i7. That said, multicores will shuffle DF from core to core as they overheat, which can mean better performance for long sessions.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: armor effectiveness
« on: March 05, 2015, 03:41:50 pm »
How would I get chausses, and how effective would they be. I was looking on the wiki and it seems that they cover more area than high boots.

Based on the wiki it would seem that the best would be chausses, chain mail, breast plate, gauntlets, greaves, and a helm.

Chausses are like socks. They are absolutely useless and bugged as part of a military uniform in fort mode. You can't get chain chausses, so they're basically just stockings, and military will equip one chausse and one high boot instead of two of each if you try to assign both.

Skin can be very lethal. It seems that it retains the original creature's mass without taking into account all the missing bits when it wrestles. Water buffalo bull skins are particularly lethal. Best just to animate some horse hair or something.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: "No water source"
« on: March 05, 2015, 06:06:46 am »
Do you have a water source designated that is actually dry? It may be that dwarves are trying to draw from that, realising that they can't, and then giving you an error message.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Refuse stockpile on hatch?
« on: March 04, 2015, 11:12:37 pm »
You can just set the minecart stop to always dump in the direction of the chute. Whenever the dwarves put an item in the minecart, it will be instantly autodumped. If you want to make it so that stuff only gets dropped with your say so, put a hatch 1z down and link it to a lever. This way the dwarves won't try to pick up things that have already been dumped, unless you open an access corridor 1z down.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 04, 2015, 03:46:02 pm »
The solution is always arming your civilians to the teeth. Give them all helmets and beatings will remain non fatal.

In my fort, the minecart routes are working as intended and food and metal is getting down to the magma sea. Unfortunately, nothing is coming back up yet.
Also due to a restructuring of the citizens' militia, everyone is running atound claiming equipment instead of working :/
Slaughter of excess turkeys before starting test on trait inheritance is progressing slowly.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Cleaning drawbridges

AFAIK dwarves only clean "underground" tiles, nothing "aboveground", even if it is inside (this is a bug)

For vanilla testing Staalo's idea of having the couples spar seems to be working well, by maximising time in... erm... contact.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: dwarven childcare (loving + peaceful)
« on: March 02, 2015, 03:19:31 pm »
Yeah the micromanagement is why I'd go for the dogs. Less attacks per second and less consistency means less skill gains but also zero chance of death or permanent injury, and without oversight too. I'll be building the combo in my fort soon.

Honestly the main childcare thread just needs everyone like you there to divert it away from the let's kill the kids mindset, as you say. Also I'm afraid this thread will get buried, along with all its useful info. I mean once a thread hits 37 pages it's there to stay.
The other thing is that it feels wrong to build on your progress in that thread when you reject it, which I'll have to do if I want to include any military training, however light, since you don't want that sort of thing in your thread (Read: the dogs).
