I think the "danger" is simply that dorfs die at your fort.

This is correct.

The formula DF uses for calculating migrants doesn't care how dwarves died at your fort, it only cares that they died. Ditto for caravans; the humans won't care if a goblin siege shows up and slaughters everyone, they'll still blame you for the disappearance of their merchants and goods.

Oh, I know. There's no need for them.

That doesn't stop a gigantic vault full of coins from being awesome.

Any floor, no matter what the material, is breakable by falling constructions/cave-ins. Walls, however, are not.

Addendum: Note that this can resulting in punching a hole clean through several levels if they only consist of floors.

It also works with chains and ropes.

Now that answering his question is out of the way, how does everyone design their jails?
I generally do:

Code: [Select]
Where . = floor, X = wall, $ = chain, d = door, B = bars
.XXXX
.B..X
.B.$X
.d..X
.XXXX

And no, I use pig tail rope and it works fine.

Ah, I thought the chains had to be metal as well. No matter how much you play DF you'll never know everything, huh?  :D

You don't have to use cages; you can also use metal chains.

But the key part is using metal of some kind.

Just rename him 'Master Pain/Betty'...

Feldur? That sounds like it's probably the name of a civilization, not a material.

Anyway, I think once coins are considered 'owned', there is no way of retrieving them from where they are randomly strewn about. Ideally you should mint your own coins with a pre-designated stockpile and forbid them immediately after they're deposited. This will prevent dwarves from picking the coins up and tossing them around the fortress.

[Shameless Plug-bump]
Reinhammers has been updated. This is the first fortress I've had survive past the ten-year mark and it's still going strong. This new version of DF rocks.

DF Suggestions / Armor Naming Scheme
« on: August 27, 2008, 09:19:23 pm »
The current naming scheme of the armor is somewhat erroneous.

'Greaves' are a piece of armor worn below the knee. The current 'greaves' should probably be replaced by Cuisses and/or Tassets.

The current 'Plate mail' should probably be replaced by Cuirass. A cuirass is a piece of armor that specifically covers the chest/back, where 'plate mail' refers to the entirety of a plate armor set.

Same goes for chain.

My current fort is "Bogtower the Eerie Ageless Mountain-Hole of Blood". Yes, I choose the name myself.
One time the RNG gave me "The Candytower of Burning".

"The Diary of Urist McMadArchitect:

...and it was on that fateful day that I realized the plan for the greatest construction of dwarvenkind: a giant, fearsome tower constructed entirely of Red Hots."

If you give your military full plate a shields as soon as you draft them, sparring accidents are drastically reduced. In Quietshakes I have lost 0 dwarves to sparring accidents of any kind (although all three of my hammerdwarves  ended up with a broken leg for a season or two.) Remember, plate mail only covers the upper body, in order for full protection you need:

Helm ("This is a helmet! You wear it to protect your head from goblin spears!")
Plate Mail ("Like the bark of a tree, plate can be worn to ward goblins whips)
Chain Mail("Like the iron in your blood, chain mail can be worn under plate to stop goblin swords")
Gauntlets("Use this to catch goblin bolts so you can shoot them back at them!")
Greaves ("This is a cup. It menaces with spikes of
  • . If you don't want to lose your chance to have children to a goblin axe you should wear them!")

Low Boots ("These are boots. Low, like you, they keep your ankles safe from hammers and maces.")
Shield ("Wear this and learn to use it well, for some day I will throw you out on the field before me to catch arrows. Failure to do so will result in your spleen, left eye, liver, pancreas, heart, and left lung getting punctured in a single shot.)

High boots > Low boots.

High boots offer both foot and lower leg protection.

Ha! That's awesome.
It would be cool if the king actually wore this crown.

[EDIT] Just looked at your fortress: what's floating in the sky on level 23??

No clue - it was probably a bat or a bird of some kind.

Yes, kids, it's been leading up to it. So, I was chilling after having constructed my walls, and was building the appropiate doors for it, when suddenly, there was bang, and poof! Human caravan.

Not too bad, I thought. The humans brought the usual junk, a few iron objects which I traded my bins full of worthless shell crafts for. Yadada.

Goblins show up. They show up way off the map though, so it's all good.

So, they come rushing around the corner of my walls to get to my entrance way, when they encounter my apparently well placed trade depot swelling with human guards. The humans lose two, and the golbins are completely destroyed. Good stuff. Even better yet, they all dropped a crapload of iron objects, so I get the best out of it. Then a snatcher shows up, gets capped by my marksdwarf and drops even more golbin goods.

Yay Humans!

Believe me when I say that eventually you will get very, very tired of those 'awesome' goblin goods..

I think dwarves will spar in any room designated as a barracks regardless of anything the player does.

I'd suggest immediately equipping your newbs with the best armor you have available. I've had surprisingly few sparring casualties in my current fort as a direct result of equipping all new recruits with masterwork leather armor to begin with (they later upgraded to steel chain).
