After some quick testing, it seems deity allegiances are not chosen until after embarking, contrary to my mistaken belief that they were generated prior.

This will make things a bit more difficult - I'll adjust the starting details as necessary. Still, it would be an astoundingly low chance if all of your dwarves had completely separate gods.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Theocracy: A Community Challenge

:D

The new versions of Dwarf Fortress have added quite a bit in the way of dwarven religious preferences, and I think it's high time to capitalize.

In the past, the ingenuity of some fervent dwarves has led them to construct temples or other structures dedicated to Armok the Blood God. But Armok isn't the only god in town now!

The Details of the Challenge:
=============================
Generate a world and pick a starting location. Prepare as you normally would and embark! (Note: due to the chance that you might not get enough dwarves with a deity you like, it may be convenient just to use the default starting build to avoid repetitive bouts of careful preparation).

The dwarves who worship your chosen deity are your 'monks'; it would be wise to select a deity that at least 2 or 3 of your starting dwarves follow. The rest are infidel slaves captured during holy crusades; they will perform the undesirable and back-breaking hauling work.

When migrants arrive, sort them out in the same way - only the worshippers of your chosen god should be accepted into the true community! The rest are merely heathenous dogs. Working them to death is doing them a favor, since their existence is only a miserable shadow of what a true believer's could be.

Your goal is to create a functioning monastery, citadel, monument, or what-have-you, dedicated to your god and reflecting, in one way or another, the things they represent (as seen on the 'Deity' screen). Of course, this is mostly up to your imagination. If you get a god associated with plants, you could line the inside of your monastery with quarry bushes. Or you could go all wussy-elf and build it around existing trees so your followers can worship in nature-loving, mamsy-pamsy bliss. You decide.

Obviously, only 'ardent' followers should be promoted to high positions of power. Since the dwarven monarchs and nobles are only empowered on the mortal coil if they are favored by your god, it's your job to 'weed out' those spies and deviates sent by other deities. If you have to kill 15 infidel Barons, so much the better!

Obviously, post pictures/progress reports of your godly endeavors, so we can all marvel at them.       :D

Edited to reflect lack of deity preference in embark screen.

I don't know much in the way of modding, but I think there would be a way to mod this in using the reaction_standard file (or something). Sadly, I have no idea how.  :( Sorry.

I have very little modding experience, so I really couldn't say one way or the other whether such behavior could be attributed to modded raws.

Perhaps I'm jumping the gun a bit by saying 'troll' (call it long-since ingrained forum reflexes) - however, you have to admit that it is rather rude of you to throw a term like 'morons' around on such short notice. For my own part, I don't think I said anything offensive, and did not imply that you were a liar anymore than Man A in the situation below implies Man B is a liar:

Man A: Hi.
Man B: Hi. I just defied gravity and flew around that telephone pole over there.
Man A: Um.. okay. I'll believe it when I see it.

Man A is not necessarily trying to be 'rude', but when someone claims to have done/witnessed something that completely defies known logic up until that point, it's a little bit hard to find them believable without some form of proof.

Suggestion: If you're going to post about any other weird/erratic game behavior like this, take a screenshot first.

Unless a screenshot, or more preferably a video, is produced - sorry, I don't believe it.

Dwarves do not 'like' miasma, under any conditions that I know of, ever. And I've yet to see a dwarf that likes rotting corpses, though I could almost buy that - but not if it's more than one.

Perhaps you're misinterpreting something.

Actually, the anyone-can-die thing has never bothered me in the least. It's one of the things I actually enjoy about GRRM's books. Conversely, it actually bothers me sometimes in series when characters seem 'invincible', or an author/filmmaker is afraid to get rid of a character. I understand main characters are meant to survive.. to a point. But that makes more sense when you're talking about one or two main characters. In a series with as many characters as Ice and Fire, I appreciate the realism that the deaths add.

Just curious - has anyone here ever read anything by S.M. Stirling? He's a perfect example. I love his books, great style, interesting characters.. but they just seem too unkillable to me, sometimes. Aside from the last book of the Dies the Fire series, where he actually killed off a couple biggies, but those have been the first main characters to die in three books.. and he, like GRRM, uses a lot of 'main characters'.

They're good books, although they're not amongst my favorites. Reading them is a little bit like.. well, it's a little like reading a fantasy/drama television production. That's not to say I wouldn't recommend them, because they're a pretty fun read.. just don't expect the depth or breadth of some of the more 'epic' fantasy works out there (and this is all just my opinion, of course).

But yes, some of the locations in the series would make really neat DF fortresses, especially if you turn on playable Humans. I'd like to build a giant stone pyramid with the Harpy of Astapor on top..   :)

I LOL'd at this.

It's true, they're like lemmings or something.

Anyway, though, I've had immigration waves of 20+ dwarves before (in one wave - and yes, I've had two waves in a year before with those kind of numbers, it's not pretty). I think it's because I tend to mine out a lot of the mountain as quickly as possible in the early game.

Just wanted to add an addendum that buildings can be supported sideways. If they couldn't, trying to carve out the front of your fortress from a mountain would result in the upper portions of the mountain slagging off, which it doesn't.

I presume you've long since buried the casualties.. it's too bad, I would have suggested taking the time to dig out a tomb for them, and immediately have it engraved. Even if the engravers were all just 'dabbling', you know the tomb would almost have to be covered in images of dwarves weeping, withering, falling, being struck down, etc.. most dismal, evil tomb EVER.   :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / It was worth the loss of a dwarf
« on: March 09, 2008, 11:19:00 am »
My latest batch of new recruits into the army has been training for the past couple in-game months. I tend to just let the new, un-armored and weaponless weaklings play with the legendary swordsdwarves, mostly just because I'm a sadistic bastard; this typically results in the death of a recruit every two or three months. Still, a good ~50-60% make it through the training, so I figure it's a good way to weed out the wimps. Or at least to figure out who's smart enough to take on the other wimps instead of the fully plated, sword-wielding tanks.    :D

So anyway, the latest death happened to be the recruit who got put in charge of the newbie squad. He died by suffocating, so I assume his lungs were pierced or crushed or something. The newly-drafted leader immediately changed the name of the squad from 'The Mechanical Gates' (not the most awful name I've seen by far, but still not exactly fear-inspiring) to 'The Impervious Sabres'. I just thought.. wow, a dwarf with an actual sense of style! I'm going to do everything I can to make sure this squad gets through the training tortu.. er, process, intact!

The only reason I can imagine this being the case is because once you've beatn them a few times, they'll send someone to request a peace treaty, and I think that's the diplomat.

Don't take any of this as fact, however.  I really don't know what I'm talking about.</STRONG>

I remember reading a post on here somewhere that detailed the story of a fort wiped out by a human siege, so I think it must be possible.. personally, though, I've never managed to piss off any of the other civilizations off to the extent that they'd send an invasion force (well, not counting the gobbos, that is).
