If you can get yourself into the habit of paying attention to kill level up messages, then ideally you only have one skill active at once. Practically, sometimes you just want to enable Fighting/Dodging/Maybe Armour and coast until you start having trouble killing things.

No wonder everyone says fighters suck.

Eh, that's mostly because wizards have access to a bunch of things that straight-up incapicitate people while not allowing saving throws[Ray of Enfeeblement and Forcecage are the big ones I remember] or while targetting peoples' weak saving throws[Dominate Person, Otiluke's Resilient Sphere]. All this on top of several effects that make them very hard to hurt without magic of your own[Divination magic, Fly, basically any illusion spell]. There are some feats and builds that help to some extent, but Otiluke's Resilient Sphere in particular is straight-up invulnerable to non-magical damage and checks Reflex saves, which aren't that good for Fighters.

Yeah, going into Lake of Nur right after Old Forest is often quite dangerous. I often save it until after I'm completely done with Into the Darkness, but you could probably do it just fine after Sandworm Nest.

Random Advice:

-Be aware that opening chests/vaults/graves/orbs is basically telling the game that it has the right to screw you over with truly ridiculous enemies. It can also give you truly ridiculous items, but they're still risky if you don't have a good idea of what you're doing/building.
-Things with colored circles underneath them are dangerous. Right click on them to view which talents they have so you know what they're capable of.
-Get a bright brass lantern of health from the Derth tool shop. The extra health and light will make a big difference early on. Its also worth it to check out the Thalore town near Norgos' Lair/Heart of the Gloom for movement infusions, psychoportation torques and mindblast torques. All three of those are quite useful early on, although mindblast will peter off eventually.
-Don't bother with sun/poison/vision inscriptions at all, they're not very good, at least compared to some of the others. Invisibility is something I've never tried, but I've heard it doesn't hide you THAT well and reduces your damage by a lot.

Just got my first win since 0.17, which is kind of annoying since its literally the second time I've played Crawl since the tournament. Oddly enough, this happened after last tourney too, except I instead 15-runed a NaTm of Chei.

All in all, 0.20 doesn't seem meaningfully different, at least not for a Formicid wearing Maxwells Armour. Formicids are actually pretty great: Innate digging lets you make killholes really easily and their very high synergy with shields lends itself well to one on one combat. Stasis is honestly more help then hindrance, since so many deaths are due to being slowed/paralyzed/blinked when you don't want to be. Lajatangs are still good, Ru is still good and AC is still the best resistance. New mutation pots are nice and I landed an MR+ from a stack of early mut pots. They're also really common[I think I found 17 of them, in total] and the only time you'll need them is against Orbs of Fire[Neqoxecs and Cacodemons seem to malmutate less now, since I fought a fair few summoned ones without getting tagged]. I got overall bad drops, with only two items standing out: An abundance of lajatangs, many of them speed branded and Maxwell's Armour. Notably, exactly ONE source of rN+ spawned in the entire game: Some fixedart demon blade that provided one pip and was guarded by a nest of oklobs. Between that and APOCALYPSE, I ended up overtraining my staves skill so I could still twirl swiftly while drained to the red. I also never cast a single spell, despite learning a bunch that I thought were useful, since Maxwells was the only good armour I found.

They didn't say what kind. Chain, plate, something else? With the normal extra layers or just the armor itself? Who the hell knows. Turns out the answer they were looking for was 50 lbs, so probably plate/field. Family that likes trying for it wanted me to look up the answer, and I was like. What. Did they say what sort of armor? No? Just "medieval"? The hell do you answer that besides picking something and guessing it was the one they were after?

The answer is you can't. Pick a number, see if it's what they want. You get one chance, hope you don't screw up.
Eh, to be fair, when a layman is talking to another layman about "medieval armour" it's a very safe bet that they're talking about plate armour. Knight in Shining Armour kinda territory.

Even then, there's a lot of variation in those armours. Was it made of iron? Of steel? Was it made to be bulletproof? How big was the wearer (because they had to be custom-fitted)? It is a pretty bullshit question.
I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have gone out of fashion so quickly if that was doable...

IIRC, there came a point where plate armour had to be made so thick to be bulletproof that knights couldn't really move without their warhorses. After one battle where the other side shot the horses and then sent out a bunch of guys with knives to slit the helpless knights' throats, people basically decided that bulletproof armour wasn't worth it.

I'd learn Discord and grab the pain dagger to start enchanting it up later. Ignore the invis quarterstaff, it wouldn't help much. I don't know at what Necromancy breakpoint it'll be better then +7 venom, but it'll definitely reach that point eventually. Also, note that multiplicative brand damage is further multiplied by stab damage, which means that Freezing/Flaming/Holy Wrath daggers are very good stabbing brands. Then I'd probably train Hexes to 18-19, get Necromancy and then Evocations to 12-15ish and then probably go primarily for Fighting/Dodging[Your Fighting is very very low and might even take priority over the other skills I mentioned, actually]. Good Evocations items to look for include the following: Wands of Acid, Iceblast and maybe Scattershot, Box of Beasts, Phantom Mirror, Sack of Spiders or any of the misc elemental evokers. Good spells include Deflect Missiles[Eventually, since it requires some investment], Animate Dead/Skeleton[Get ASAP so you have minions to hide behind], Blink, Summon Butterflies and of course Darkness/Invisibility/Mana Vipers.

I've usually found Discord to be a bit underwhelming, considering how much of a pain it is to get, but its still quite good against large packs of monsters, especially living ones. Since you've trained Hexes so obscenely high, it might not be a bad idea to get. How much of a failure chance would you have if you learned it immediately? Generally, Invisibility is a good thing for stabbers to use on things that resist hexes, but you don't seem to have the spellbook on you. Maybe check if there's something with evokable invisibility lying around the dungeon? Another thing to check the dungeon for is a short blade with the pain brand: If you're branching out into necromancy, pain is a very good brand that can kill most living creatures quite easily when attached to a quick weapon. Definitely no to branching out into Transmutations, since that requires very high levels of Unarmed to be successful. Polearms would be a better choice, seeing as you have Wyrmbane and that Depths/Zot are both saturated with dragons. As for Evocations... you only have one good Evocations item[Lightning Rod], so I'd probably delay training that until you have a way to reliably kill monsters. Also, have you cleared Vaults 1-4 yet? If not, then its much much safer there then in Shoals/Depths.



To summarize:

1: Look for evokable invisiblity and a pain branded short blade.
2: Check your failure rate for Discord and learn it if its at 20% or below.
3: Clear Vaults 1-4 and Swamp[If it generated] before even thinking about Depths.
4: If you haven't found a pain short blade, consider maybe using Wyrmbane for non sneak attacking purposes, since its good and Spriggans can wield it.

Beat the game, more or less. Didn't save Curly Brace, unfortunately. I got the Tow Rope, brought her along with me and even performed the robot draining procedure in the cabin. And then, thinking that she could just sort of swim back, I left her lying there. It took me until I'd gotten to the Last Cave to realize that she'd given me her bubble shield and thus couldn't swim back on her own. So I guess that's something to do later.

I gotta say, this wasn't that hard of a game, with a couple exceptions. The Last Cave[Hidden] is pure bullshit. It has the terrible hopping enemies, Booster 2.0 shenanigans, an annoying boss in a tight arena and a hallway of instant-death blocks from above. The final bosses weren't THAT difficult in comparison, although it still took me several tries simply because four moderately hard back-to-back fights are a pain.

Moreover, this is easily the best platformer I've ever played. The biggest reason is simply that annoying jumping puzzles become a non-issue once you get the Machine Gun and can just swoosh around on your murder-jetpack mowing down everybody. That said, the power-loss-on-hit mechanic is incredibly annoying, although at least the Nemesis makes it irrelevant for the hardest parts of the game.

My favourite part of AD&D is that Monks aren't allowed to use oil. There's no explanation of what this entails and no other class is limited in this fashion. There's a table with an Oil column that says "Yes" for all the other classes and "No" for Monk.

VS of Yred is great. Allies to help you get breathers to regenerate and Drain Life when you really need healing. The thing is, you get really used to your minions hitting things. Until, of course, they don't. See, Phantasmal Warriors have a nasty habit of teleporting away from between you and your enemy. And because Webtiles LagTM I didn't notice my ghostwall had scampered off until it was too late. The fact that the entrance to Snake was guarded by a guardian serpent that ate my only blink scroll sure didn't help.

Wands of Acid/Iceblast/Lightning/Scattershot are still fairly powerful with some investment and miscellaneous evokers are still good as panic buttons. The Heal/Haste/Tele wands didn't scale with Evocations to begin with, so the reasons for investing it literally haven't changed. Unless you raised it to 27 so you could spam Disc of Storms in Zigs, but that's an edge case.

I've got one trickster-type deity who's been in three of my campaigns thus far, under different names and styles. He's only really been a major character in one of them and exists only as a time ghost or a legend in the other two.

Sign me up in Expert or Advanced. I haven't played seriously since the last tournament and did quite poorly there, so I'm a little leery of getting an Expert spot, despite my multiple 15-rune wins.
