Other Games / Re: Cities: Skylines, The Sim City we all wanted! Out Now!
« on: August 09, 2015, 10:43:09 pm »
Well, Sim City 4 doesn't have the same problem because it's really more of a spreadsheet visualizer versus the agents Skylines uses.

Yeah, I understand that part. In some ways Skylines uses a far more advanced and realistic system. But, whenever I got a huge city in Sim City 4 (and I'm so bad at city builders, took me ages to finally get a good city) it still "felt" (key word is "felt) huge and not empty. If what my friend is saying is correct in his game, and what I'm reading...a huge city in Skylines is not going to feel the same at all and will feel empty. Especially if its only 65k people active at once.

If that is the case, I probably like the way sim city 4 does it to be honest. Even if its a lot more simple. At least in SC4 it always feels crowded and busy.

On the other hand, its nice to make larger towns in Skylines. Its nice being able to build in the mountains and stuff on custom maps. But if 65k is the actual active agent limit, I'd rather play SC4 to make the big cities and Skylines for larger towns and smaller rural towns.

Well, from this thread (and there are a few others)

https://www.reddit.com/r/CitiesSkylines/comments/2znnr2/the_journey_to_over_1_million_lets_discuss/

A one million pop city will only ever have 65k people out in the city at one time. That is what the game only simulates. So after reaching a certain amount of population. the city will look roughly the same, except it will be bigger on the game map. After a certain point (past 300k or so according to that thread), traffic never increases, which is what my friend encountered. But he probably has other issues.

Still, if that thread is true at all, I think I liked Sim City 4 a LOT more. It didn't really simulate millions of people either, but when I played it, it sure felt big and populated. But maybe it would end up the same as Cities Skylines and I'm just remembering with rose colored glasses :P

No, the pop limit is a million. There's 65k limits on other things, though.

are you sure? My friend said the game started getting really weird after he passed 200k and he is at 300k now. Like things aren't being done properly, and traffic never increased at all. I read on reddit  through many posts, and pop IS a million...but there can ONLY be 65k actors on the roads and doing jobs/delivering stuff. Which if that is true, that explains why my friend is losing a lot of business and running into weird things.

(edit: If that is true, a million population city would look like there is only 65k people in it. But I've seen pictures of the large cities, but can't really tell. Is that wrong information on reddit then?

So, I never made a city that big. But, my friend got to a city of 300k and he said the game is really bugging out on him. The traffic doesn't match a 300k city at all, people aren't going to work properly, he is losing a lot of business because people aren't going to their jobs. And he is experiencing a lot of "weirdness". He didn't really explain, but something he said is buildings aren't being built anymore...dunno what he means. (edit: He never showed me screenshots, I told him to take one and he hasn't yet. So could be partly on his design. But he said he has no traffic issues barely at all, and he (supposedly) designed the city with population in mind. He used the typical grid layout of the big cities he has seen people make)

I did research for him, and supposedly 65k npcs are max limit of a city or something. And after a certain amount of buildings are built, you can't build anymore? And only 65k citizens can be active at once?

I told him that and he said if true, he is gonna return the game to steam. He has until tomorrow to get it returned and go back to playing Sim City 4 where he can make "real" cities (his words). So was the information I gave him wrong? Or is this game really not able to make grand cities like in sim city games without bugging out with hardcoded limits?

Cause if that is true, that pretty much kills the game for me too. But its way too late for me to take it back. I just won't be buying DLCs for it lol. That is why I liked sim city, making huge amazing cities...even though each citizen wasn't actually "really" part of the game world, it felt like real cities. I thought 1 million was the cap, which is fine enough, but if only 65k are able to be used...that is not a city at all. In california, that would be considered a large town lol. San Diego feels small, and its still vastly more populated and active than 65k...

(edit: Well I do really enjoy Cities Skylines. Played 300+ game hours, so obviously I got my money out of it. But, knowing there is such a small hardlimit on actors kinda ruins the entire game for me. I wish I didn't even read that as I really enjoy the game till that. But 65k is nowhere close to the 1million pop limit lol)

What does everyone think of the upcoming dlc?

Looks really good to me, especially for the first one.

Well, my friend is already saying he regrets buying it and he has only played it since yesterday. He played looking at his steam account, 8 hours and is already bored.

In the end, I ended up installing cities skylines again (I had to stop due to video card issues and even on low settings game lagged a lot for me lol). It runs a lot better now.

okay, well thanks for your feedback. :) I imagine a week from now, my friend will have moved on like usual then lol.

I'll pick up children of the nile :) That was a lot of fun, and I never even had the expansion last time! Was too poor at the time cause I was a kid :P Only had the base game

Banished is a very simple concept, weighted to be a very difficult game.
It's not overly complex, so there isn't the suite of 'special things' to keep you hooked.

Buy it, expect to love it and pour days into it, but don't expect much after that.

Ah, so if I want something that lasts a lot longer...I probably should just pick up children of the nile then I'm guessing. I played that years ago, and played months and still had a good time and I still didn't run out of things (well, I didn't play every day, but I did play a lot for months quite a bit, and I was kinda bad at it lol).

So...big necro :P

I have a friend who just bought this. But, like every new game he gets he texts me every 1-2 hours for up to a week saying how amazing it is and I have to buy it...NOW! I HAVE TO BUY IT NOW! (his exact words for every new game he gets lol. No exaggeration xD) Like a used cars salesman lol.

So, before actually buying it...as most of the time a week later he goes "boy that was a waste of money"...

Is banished worth getting? :P I do want to play a city builder. I loved children of the nile, I can buy that on GOG since I lost my old disks. Its cheaper too.

I tried the newer Anno game (the sci-fi one, not the one yet to be released) and I didn't like it...it was too combat based and AI cheated lol. I just want a nice calming city builder to play.

So is banished worth getting at all? Or should I just go ahead and buy CotN?

It's the other kind of survival game where you go looking for food so you can have the energy to look for food.

So, sorta like that one 3d island game? Survival island or something? You got stranded on a ship, and the graphics looked like they were made in java and sorta Wurm-like. You could build a little tropical paradise. And the animals on the island had the worst AI ever, but for some reason...I played the game for an entire month even though it was really basic really lol. And if you did the story part of it, it had a random pirate and made no sense lol. Know what game I'm talking about? That is one of the first games I found when I first signed up to bay12 forums lol.

But the whole point was to get food, and keep hydrated (I believe water was a thing) and make sure you didn't starve. The animals were more of a distraction really. There were some mods made for it which were cool.

This looks pretty awesome actually and I've got a bit tired of the genre.
My only concern is that there just don't seem to be many threats other than the weather, and the wolf battles seem a bit lame. I mean I'm not expecting/wanting a day-z experience, but I can imagine getting a bit bored without some sort of danger to keep me on my toes.

Well, while looking through the steam forum for the game. There were quite a few posts about how boring the game got later on. Guess in those posts they said best part of the game was early on when having to find stuff to survive. And guess wolves can be hard to find. So I may end up holding off buying as it develops more. But, the game looks beautiful, the setting is great and it isn't the typical survival multiplayer dayz experience where you just get griefed over and over or get ambushed by hackers lol.

That sounds cool that they connected them up. Are the regions pretty big?

Also, dunno if there is a thread about this game here or not. I searched on here and tried through Google and found none. But, this search engine is a bit weird as searching "The Long Dark" finds every thread/post with long and dark in it lol

Looks to get great reviews on steam. The art style looks amazing, its only singleplayer (which some may not like, I actually like that) and looks really hard, but fun.

Here is a video (though some of you may find him annoying)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJSxtqUylCQ

That is how I found about it at first.

Anyone play it and think it is worth getting? The game looks great.
