Other Games / Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
« on: March 15, 2015, 11:15:53 pm »
I just realized something as I was thinking about crappy AI in most games.

Is it me, or did Oblivion have better AI than Skyrim?

I mean...in Skyrim you have piniata wolf packs waiting for you to come kill them and a lot of MMO style stupid AI like bandits that stand around for you to get candy out of their corpse.

Now maybe its because I haven't played Oblivion in a long time...but I recall the AI was a lot more realistic, and travelled around a lot more and was better scripted than Skyrim was. I don't recall running places and seeing piniata WoW style training dummies standing in locations for hours and hours and months in games...for you to come kill them. I do recall bandits standing around, but they actually roamed around their camps and fort, but in Skyrim they literally just stand there doing nothing. There is of course vampire caves and stuff where they tend to stand around. But that happens in Skyrim too.

Am I remembering Oblivion wrong? I'm not talking about modded either, talking just vanilla game. Modded skyrim you can fix most of the AI issues to make it a lot more realistic, since the mods are a lot more advanced overall. But vanilla skyrim, the AI seems really shitty compared to Oblivion in the exterior places (both games have pretty bad interior AI)...unless like I said...I'm remembering Oblivion AI wrong.

I don't really see many games with good realistic AI. Modded Skyrim has amazing AI (probably one of the best), Ryzom (MMO) has realistic AI...Tabula Rasa had good AI. But so many games, the AI is just there as a piniata lol.

At least there is mods for that :P

But to add,the mmo itself is good as far as MMOs go. But inventory system killed it for me.

But like I added to my above post, hopefully people find enjoyment in it. One persons trash is anothers treasure So to speak :) all preferences to games are different.

"a skyrim game"

ow my brain

Well, skyrim is vastly different than morrowind and a lot different than oblivion. Skyrim is more linear than oblivion was IMO, and definetly dumbed down in a lot of ways. Its still my most played game cause of mods. Each elder scrolls though is pretty much its own game. Like morrowind is nothing like skyrim or oblivion, despite it being elder scrolls. So I consider them being their own.
So if both Morrowind and Oblivion are not like each other nor like Skyrim, why are you comparing ESO to Skyrim?

my main complaint that ruined it for me is the atrocious inventory system. Wow does it way better, and most other mmos have way better inventory systems. I'm not interested in destroying resources because the game has an arbitrary mechanic to limit crafting. Nor spend half the time running to the bank over and over.

Don't really care it isn't like other elder scrolls. It could be like call of duty for all I care. I would still play it. But the inventory system sucks. Its like aions one. Which was also terrible.

If they redid the inventory, I'd enjoy it a lot more. And no, removing ingredients from crafting as a "feature" only makes it worse.

But in any case, not like I'm gonna play it again anyway. So its crappy inventory has no affect on me. So hope people find it fun, everyone's taste in games is different.

I'm still not gonna play even for free lol. Last time I played (as you can see my post above)...more than half my time of 2 weeks before I quit, was dealing with the crappiest inventory system.

WoW lets you have a guild bank with multiple tabs, a bank with tons of bag slots+area for resources, HUGE bags (up to 4+base bag) with tons of space

On every single character you can make. So you can have like 9 characters for example, each with their own guild, bank and bag system and your main character can be in an ordinary guild.

The company behind ESO only did it to limit crafting. Can't think of any other reason for the stupid system.

In fact, I'll just go and say WoW feels more like elder scrolls than ESO does lol. Not just the inventory system (though like oblivion/skyrim you can carry tons of stuff), but other stuff too even though its not fully open world. WoW isn't really a skyrim game, but it sure is closer to it than ESO will ever be.

Yeah I'm really loving that mod. And as a note, it does have a lot of custom items in the various markets...so my very first initial impressions on that were wrong. Plus you can get more custom stuff by enlisting in an army and raising in ranks.

I decided to be the Aztecs. I like the idea of kicking the Spanish out, conquering the entire western world...and then raiding across the ocean the land of africa and europe. Sorta like europa universalis 3 with the random aztecs :P Plus, if we have the entire land mass...it would be REALLY hard for anyone to travel over to take anything. It would be a huge journey, and you lose morale for being too long out at sea (think AI is effected too, dunno though). Still a long journey, with no safe areas to land.

At least the 1.6 version I have, isn't entirely finished. Incas are named wrong (probably easy enough to fix, its just a faction name change) and some things are still in testing mode. But, guess its an in development mod (though with that said, it has a TON of stuff and is pretty advanced).

My first fort battle was pretty epic. I decided to get all the other lords and attack that spanish fort on aztec's shores. Spanish can't really defend it (all their lords are mostly in europe)...so actually "easy pickings"

Huge thick line of Spanish musketeers on the wall, and my waves of Aztecs swarming toward them. Playing at 500 battle size. Aztecs dying all around, I stay back so I can just watch whats going on (me being morale support :P)...aztecs reach the ladders...being decimated on the way up.

But, finally the first Aztecs reach the top of the walls. Spanish front line gets decimated. Not good close fighters I guess or Aztecs are just better. I then follow up, but even though we heavily outnumber the Spanish and breached the wall...its still a blood bath of hundreds of Aztecs dying.

45-50 minutes into the battle, many dead, many wounded...we finally take their fort. But that was epic, like a movie battle. So many died from their guns.

So, now whats left is Mayans (but they are easy pickings, I don't think they are really developed yet), Incas and the natives of north america. Plus some islands with spanish on them.

While browsing moddb for any "new" mods I found...

http://www.moddb.com/mods/16th-century

for warband. Looks really epic. I took a quick look in-game and map is HUGE. Granted he did scale down some areas. Kind of to be expected. But, there is europe, africa, eastern US, central america, south america and asia.

You can be a native american, or an african tribe or any other number of factions in the map.

Seems to have a lot of features too. Only downside I saw was the items in merchants are typical vanilla ones. But, all the units get custom stuff it looks like (at least for the native americans). So there is custom armors, but can't buy them I guess.

If anyone decides to try it, get the 1.6 version found in the comments. It links to mega.co as the download host for it, but its a test version (I found it worked better).

The real challenge in this game is building an awesome city AND making it look amazing.

yes, and being really bad at roads does not help :P The roads look like like an abstract painting rofl. Next time I get on, I'm gonna have to spend some actual time on them. I zoomed out and laughed at how bad they were and I was one who made them :P

594
My roads look like something you'd see in a really hard maze.

Imagine that, in my cities road system.

Now you know how bad my roads are. :P

On the bright side, traffic is barely a problem.

On the other side, its so ugly as hell rofl. I'm gonna spend a lot of time re-doing my roads.

I made a custom map. I like it personally, but the hardest part of making maps in this game is water. Because its actually fluid and exists in the world...it was a bit hard to get water flow right. I'm not very good with highway connections either, so I just did a pre-built one.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=407156937

I did make an area for a dam to the north by the waterfall (it may take some moving around to get it), as that was a bit hard to do as well. Its easy to make sides to steep for a dam (dams should be able to be built on any terrain though, I looked at pictures and they are often built on steep terrain), or just not enough energy powering through it.

Other than that, it has highway connections, air connections, train connections and ship connections. A lot of fertile land, some oil, some ore and some trees. Along with animal spawns and what not. The map is more of a fertile desert kind of map, so except for some areas and along the rivers/water...its half-desert.

I want to see a mod to make dams built on any terrain though. Its kinda not realistic from what I can see on google images. I see images of dams built on really steep terrain, but this game doesn't let you do that.

So, this broke paradox day-one sale records.

In 24 hours, the game sold 250k copies.

It's a placeable building. Boosts tourism and stuff.

I think he means that the tallest building should be more centralized...not randomly out on the outskirts.

It does look rather out of place.

On the other end of the scale, it also gets boring if the entire game-universe is at peace, ruled by a giant super-alliance of the most powerful empires.
The thing that so many people don't understand about these kind of games is that you NEED the assholes and the peaceful people.  If it's just assholes no ones really doing anything besides wrecking everything and with just peaceful people you get no conflict.

All these hermits need to realize that you can JOIN the assholes "ruining" the game.  They'll ignore you AND you'll actually join the community.  You don't even need to do anything other than just be social.  Hell, you may even eventually join in doing something fun.

No thanks.

letting youtubers get preview copies is a pretty smart marketing move. It wouldn't work for most AAA games cause the games are usually overhyped by the developers/publisher. But, literally almost, if not all, of the hype is actual legit (not like most AAA games) as they are letting pretty extensive let's plays on it.

Its very rare for a game that markets it like that, to end up being bad...because that shows a huge good sign the developers really believe in their product (granted it still may end up bad, like starforge had videos of lets plays on it but if one was to watch the videos they could see it was bad anyway). But I like that type of marketing a lot more which gives this game a huge kudo point. Anytime I see a used cars salesman type of marketing out to overhype a product, I pretty much don't even bother with the game at all. Unless its bethesda, then I pretty much know if the game sucks or is lackluster in areas, I can mod it to be epic as hell :P

Be prepared for big wall of spoiler text

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now with all that said. Enjoy the compilation :) I spent so many hours on it...SO MANY. And while my PC is pretty border-line to run it (i5 660 CPU (yeah lol), gtx 660 2gb and 8gig DDR3 old ancient ram)...I do get 30-40 FPS  out of it, it never drops below 30 since I deactivated the immersive patrol mods.

Hopefully this helps people out. If I was an ordinary casual gamer, heck if I would want to spend even 50 hours getting mods to work. Man, it took so much trial and error and everything. This is by far the hardest most time consuming compilation I've done for any game lol.

You won't ever see me do one again(well, maybe for Fallout 4, but I won't be doing one for an elder scrolls again), and so I really hope this just works out of the box for everyone. I am so done with working on this compilation I am pretty much burnt out. This one has had the most work, time and effort put into it. So, hopefully it works for everyone like it does for me.
