Other Games / Re: Formicarium: combining DF, Ants and Genetics
« on: November 21, 2014, 06:24:22 pm »
Finally a game about ants *squees*

Lets see:

1. Will there be different species? Like Slaver Ants?, Army Ants? and polygyn (a hive with many queens) and monogyn (hives with only one queen?)

There are definitely TONS of ants that can be included.

2. Will it be more scientifically accurate with different species only having different ants and specific mechanics (aka leafcutters can grow fungus but slaver ants can not, but in return get to keep slaves)? Or will it more likely be a freeform system?

Hopefully different ants also have "optimal" habitat. Like, leafcutter ants tend to need tropical areas (though some live in the desert). Or some ants thrive in the desert, but do bad in moist areas (or opposite). Some ants even nest in wood. Like wise, some ants are better at defending, some are invasive and some just blend into the environment and go unnoticed.

Like, Pheidole megacephala/Argentine ants/Solenopsis invicta being the three main invasive ants...one should be able to play as them for a really "easy" time. But, you are vastly more noticed by humans which makes it A LOT harder in some ways than playing other species. But hopefully they don't do the "easy" approach and just go with the lame common ones everyone knows about. Come on, at least add unique species that aren't as well known.

Everyone knows harvester ants, but they eat seeds/insects mainly.

But others, like Forelius pruinosus/mccooki and Dorymyrmex bicolor get huge colonies out in the desert. They are the #1 most popular ant of deserts in North America.

3. Do you intend to include different seasons?

Hopefully they include that

4. Will humans make an appearance? ( the big foot out of the sky...run for yer lives!)

Hopefully they include that, but include bug poison/baits/spray etc (mostly for invasive ants or if your colony gets huge and becomes a nuisance)...not just a lame foot.

5. Will you be able to invade other Ant-Hives and take their hives?

Hopefully they include that

6. Will there be a multiplayer option?

Don't really care about that. Unless its a HUGE total war style map, but insect-based. Otherwise it just takes development time.

7. Will the game in scale be like Dwarf Fortress, or will you be able to actually expand into a farch stretching "Ant-Empire"?

I won't be interested if you can't make an ant empire to be honest. We already have sim ant and even then, in todays time...its way too simple. I'd like it like total war, conquering regions/habitats and stuff. Heck, take over neighborhoods or cities and drive out the humans (unless humans drive you out). Spread your colony to different areas of the "world", and fight other ant species, termite species and wasps/bees...or just other insects. If they do this, I'll kickstart this so fast. Otherwise, I'll still be waiting for my ultimate ant game to be made :D

8. Is there going to be a campaign?

--
9. What about "animal husbandry?" Will ants be able to domesticate lice and milk them for their sweet, sweet sugar?

If they don't include farming aphids or scalebugs, it won't be really realistic at all. TONS of ant species get honeydew from aphids.

Whenever I accidentally win control of Jerusalem, I always immediately give it independence for the above reasons.

Well if I wasn't "over 9000 mercenaries" Venice, keeping it would be a bit harder. I have 15 trade posts nearly maxed out and the income is in a completely different dimension. Money >>> Levies.

kaian-a-coel, what year did you end up starting?
867. I have charlemagne but I wanted a more familiar setting for my first time as a republic.

Have any tips as starting as Venice during that time? (I don't have charlemagne, I'm waiting for Winter sales)...have most of the DLC (just a few/couple missing besides the new expansion). Don't really need to be hand-held or anything like that, but just some tips or something to start off. Also who did you choose to start as? Did you start as the leader or one of his vassals?

I think Venice does fit me better gameplay wise than Byzantines would, since I love mercenaries (Carthage in Rome 2 are great for that :D) +trading/economy :) Seems Venice is good for both.

kaian-a-coel, what year did you end up starting?

Also, I ended up trying the Byzantine emperor in the old god start. Did rather good, lasted a good 30 or so years (think got to 31 years) (for a noob that barely knows how to play, playing a hard to play emperor seems good to me). Tried my best at staying friends with Armenia/Georgia...seems right (maybe its the colors). Was doing great, beating back the Muslims. They were being rather ganged up on my everyone, so in my game they were actually losing.

And...half my empire revolts. Which is where I left off.

If I do end up losing (or just starting over). I've learned FAR more at managing stuff (forgot to manage dukes properly, so in the future I'll have to keep that in mind. I forgot to check on my Dukes like people say you have to as byzantines) and keeping people happy. I know you guys and everyone else says europe/ireland...but that is just too boring for me. Outside of maybe England...my preferred area is italy/greece/africa/spain and the eastern areas. Europe honestly gets me kinda bored, it happened in Total War games too. Dunno why. I've always liked the middle/eastern places and africa. And spain on the occasion.

I think next I want to try Venice (or maybe someone else in the region) and taking Kingdom of Jerusalem. That sounds fun. I always liked playing KoJ in 1257 ad mount and blade mod, was one of my favorite factions. I know there is a start specifically where KoJ appears, but I think I'd like making it more than starting as it.

But yeah, I'm the guy that sees a tutorial or a starting area regarded as a tutorial and goes "boring" and elephants his way through the china shop :P I have more fun learning from mistakes and doing it the hard way in games (which I learn better from, but that is me), than being bored as hell in a region I'm not that interested in. Don't look at guides (not often anyway) or videos, just learn from doing. And hey, my byzantine game went great until I forgot to manage my dukes properly. A lot of people were happy until one duke revolted leading an entire revolution. My guy had tons of kids, a friend, blood relations in armenia/georgia.

Oh and I did assassination plots on a muslim kingdom :D The one south of Sicily in Africa I targeted, and half his empire turned against him. I didn't really know how it worked, but figured it out easy enough.

Anyone recommend a good starting character to be for someone pretty new? I'm still learning, but VERY very...slowly figuring it out.

I was told to choose Ireland. But that is the most boring place ever, or at least up there. I get too bored there. I don't like british isles in total war or real life (which is funny since half my family is British...hey I don't mind visiting I just find the place VERY boring if I ever lived there)

I tried Byzantines, because they are my #1 favorite. But I wasn't sure to start with a count, emperor or anything. Mostly chose different Doux. But, in the first year, my guy was assassinated...that was fun xD

Went for a later start (1066 instead of the old god one) and see HRE is huge and looks easy enough to get into. But, I couldn't do anything with the guy I picked. So probably too hard to start or I chose wrong or something.

Tried an African one down deep SW...and...that made a lot more sense to me. Not much going on there and nice and simple. I found it easier and more interesting than Ireland. I actually learned most from that lol. But, I would have preferred to be Byzantines or something else.

Went to Armenia and got owned by all the Islam countries...that was the hardest place I chose lol. I love the history of Armenia though.

I tend to prefer the eastern areas. But HRE looks good only cause it doesn't seem I'd have any trouble since they are powerful.

Any suggestions?

I'm not gonna spoil anything since that would be definitely douchey...but...

I'm playing alliance and damn...the 2nd zone you go to, its a total hectic war zone. If you are on a PvP server, its battles all over the place. Even if you can handle the horde (or alliance), the wildlife gets you!

It feels like you are thrown into the depth of a jungle filled with EVERYTHING THAT WANTS TO KILL YOU and man, huge battles break out between horde/alliance. Granted, I'm on Emerald Dream and the server cluster has most balanced horde/alliance out of them all...so your experience might vary.

But damn is it hectic. I actually had to get off and relax rofl. Never had that happen at all in WoW.

Horde? FOR THE ALLIANCE!

I have a dwarf hunter, a dwarf death knight, another dwarf hunter...and a 3rd dwarf hunter...and a 4th dwarf hunter. 3 hunters are level 90, my DK is level 91 and one hunter is level 43

Can you tell I love dwarves? :P And I like the level game mostly, so I don't tend to do end game raiding. So I have a lot of hunters :P And dwarf is the only race to be for a hunter. Because BOOM HEAD SHOT...dwarf with guns fits so well :D

They can add any race to WoW. And dwarves will always be the best :D

No MMO will ever beat them in what you can do. They'll keep making updates and adding stuff to do and other MMOs can't catch up. Maybe star conflict will out EVE, but...I'm not even paying 1% of attention to it.

It might be technology that knocks WoW off its throne. They've done graphical updates, and they even pretty much rebuild the world when they added flight to old world Azeroth. But VR is coming. Oculus Rift is scheduled for a late 2015 release.  It might take years, but the entire method of "watch a guy fight stuff" might start to feel dated when you can be the one doing the fighting.

"Video killed the radio star."

I haven't payed much attention to Oculus Rift (I've learned to avoid paying attention before a game is released. Most just end up too hyped and disappointed) but Rift didn't look that great to me. You still have to use a controller/mouse or keyboard from what I saw from the couple youtube videos I've watched. I want something like the Wii/U where your hands control the motion and your body literally controls the character. Wii u already does that, I didn't see Oculus do that. But like I said, I only pay 1% at the very most to ANYTHING pre-release...so maybe I'm mistaken here. But what I saw, it didn't look any different than what the Wii does and even worse as I STILL must use a controller/keyboard etc.

Maybe technology isn't there yet for virtual reality. But...it IS there, because Wii has it. But even then, it isn't really that accurate. So for me to get excited or interested at all, it will probably easily be 10+ years away.

Now what would be cool is Matrix style. You yourself is in the world, go into some kind of seat, plug yourself in and hello virtual world. And, there would be sensories for smells/touch and...HELLO PORN! The porn industry would take that and dominate ROFL.

But that is a futuristic sci-fi thing...but THAT would kill off entire games rofl. To be honest, I won't be interested that much in virtual reality like Rift unless I can plug myself in and be transported matrix style. But that might even be past my lifespan. And if some religious nutters take over, that won't ever happen, it be like the dark ages but worse. But I think that be amazing tech...do it matrix style. Plug yourself in and there you are.

But before that, I don't think Oculus rift is that great looking. I don't want to be wearing a helmet and STILL have to use a keyboard/mouse/controller...that is LESS immersive to me.

Its still a good MMO. And honestly, only MMO I can get into with the exception of EVE Online.

Recently tried SWTOR, ESO, FFXIV, Darkfall, LOTRO (that turned out horrid after freemium), GW2...even the bowels of Tibia and Runescape. So desperate I tried Planet Entropia. Tried SWG but it isn't really ready to play still being in alpha or beta or whatever (I love pets and pets aren't functioning 100%)

Other MMOs...I tried...Anarchy Online, EQ2, beta tests...heck tried ArcheAge but left since I hate cash shops.

Only two MMOs that I still enjoy a lot are well WoW and EVE.

WoW, because there is so much to do and variety. EVERY RACE HAS A STARTING AREA AND STORY. EVE because...so much to do and variety.

No MMO will ever beat them in what you can do. They'll keep making updates and adding stuff to do and other MMOs can't catch up. Maybe star conflict will out EVE, but...I'm not even paying 1% of attention to it.

GW2 ended up being a cash grab (I lolled so hard at the cash shop). It sucked compared to the first. SWTOR voice acting and story sucked, can get same experience for much cheaper and FAR better quality in KOTOR/Mass Effect/Dragon Age. LOTRO is just horrid what turbine did to it. Tibia is okay. Runescape is runescape. FFXIV wasn't my thing. Not really any exploring to do. ESO...I'd rather play my awesomely modded Skyrim. Entropia is actually...graphically good...thats about it. And SWG which would be placed alongside WoW/EVE is still being developed. I'm waiting for its actual release (and yes that is star wars galaxies) and yes you can play it, the good ole classic version not the crappy version SOE made.

If I'm bored of those two, I play age of empires 2 or mostly Skyrim...I love Skyrim. I can play skyrim until the next elder scrolls game :P so...a long time :P

In truth, most new MMOs suck...so I'm pretty much stuck with WoW and EVE. It doesn't look like anything better is coming along, and most of it is freemium/cash shop free to play pay to win shit like archeage.

Its like Skyrim...its kinda an old game...but nothing better has come along RPG wise. Nothing with as much moddability and replayability and expansive open world game. Its been many years, and no one even wants to make a game like Skyrim. Just linear unmodded rpgs. The new witcher looks REALLY good (I dunno how it will turn out, but looks great), but NOTHING at all to take Skyrim's place thus far. Same with WoW/EVE. No MMO has come out that is better than them. Want sandbox? EVE. Want themepark? WoW. Pretty much only two options. Of course people will play darkfall or something else, but they aren't as huge or epic as WoW/EVE. The only exception is SWG (but its older), and it needs more work done on it.

Server issues aside and the resulting, typical cries of nerdy foreseen anger from every MMO and expansion or non-MMO game launch.

And keep in mind, I don't tend to praise WoW...I played it for a long time. Loved BC, Lich King expansion was my favorite for lore reasons. Greatly disliked cataclysm, panderia was even worse and I just skipped that entirely...won't even level ANY character in panderia NO THANKS

WoD has to be my #1 favorite expansion for WoW...overtaking even that of Lich King. It feels so much like Warcraft. The first 30-45 min are kinda linear, and its annoyingly CoD like where they teleport you off the map. But, it does set it up and is kinda epic the first time (maybe twice, not really after that). However, get past that...its rather open-world like. Pretty free to go wherever in a given zone and do quests in whatever order you please. Draenor looks amazing too, they did amazing job on the art there. People complain its too easy, but on my fresh non-boosted 90, its really challenging. Probably overgeared from raids.

I personally like the outpost too. Its kinda pre-placement stuff, but I think its a nice feature that can be expanded on. Gives it that warcraft feel (again).

In honesty, from everything I've seen thus far...its obvious they tried to re-create the Warcraft experience into the MMO. They haven't REALLY done that before in my eyes. And thats why I'm loving the expansion thus far. We'll see how it goes when I'm 100 on my 3 main characters...but 90-100 is by far an amazing experience.

I'm guessing they had a fresh team or new vision or something that liked the old ways more.

What sorcery is this? A game about being a dragon? Not one about killing one?

Great. Its so annoying being forced to kill dragons. I hate those kind of games. They never give you an option to NOT kill a dragon. So lame and way too gamey.

Too little gameplay right now though since it looks like it was thrown up on steam access with barely anything developed.

But too rare are the games of being friends dragons or being a dragon.

Heck, I even got a skyrim mod to make all dragons friendly and not attack :D

Downsampling and the right sweetfx preset...and wow does wow look good. One of the better looking MMOs to be honest.

I prefer mega.co

Look it up on google.

I can upload 10+ gig files (perfect for my skyrim mod overhauls). I just recently uploaded a 30 gig 7zip file.

TONS of space (I think it starts at 100gb, now I have 1 TB of space just cause I've been on it for a long time)

(edit: Looks like they dropped it to 50. And guess I have actually unlimited space just because I was one of the first to sign up. Still 50gb should be enough for most people and its more than what others give you. Plus not many allow 10+gb uploads.)

(edit: Not like space matters entirely. I have multiple dropbox/mega.co accounts :P Space is a non-issue. Just make a 2nd/3rd/4th account...would need multiple email addresses of course.)

I switched from Live Another Life to Skyrim Unbound

Live Another Life ended up being more Live The Same Life...because with certain mods and skyrim in general...NPCs and jarls get really bugged if you don't do the helgen quest. So every character I ever made always (no matter the start with LAL) ran right to helgen and did it right away so no npcs, scripts, mods etc etc broke the game from ignoring helgen.

Unbound looks vastly more superior. And way better for RP, because you don't have to be dragonborn at all. Which LAL may have RP backstories with its starts...it ends up being the same in the end.

So...here are some SFW screenshots. I added a bunch of custom stuff to his mod...not really showing much "anime" stuff, but that is what the creator called his mod.

In truth, most of the anime stuff are more NSFW stuff or things meant for youtube. Like dances, most of the characters, tons of anime clothing/items to craft. But it is more of a mythical overhaul than anything. The anime stuff is mostly cosmetic. But the rest of it gives skyrim a really mysterious mythical feel...especially at night, but I didn't get a chance for that. Night time looks epic. There is actually a lot of anime-like stuff though, but I just got SKSE memory patch to work, game to be stable and now it is bed time. :P

It does look rather epic. As for blood, its enhanced blood mod but overwritten with crimson tide textures (only)...enhanced blood looked so fugly and horrid...and crimson tide looked amazing but mod is broken (as in, if you use it, you break saves and destroy game). So get to use crimson tide blood but with enhanced blood mod :)

http://s4.photobucket.com/user/Vendayn/library/Skyrim/Mythical%20Skyrim

Should work. I'll keep any NSFW away from that link. Also, it usually isn't that bright...but it is a "clear" weather. When it rains, night or when it is overcast in skyrim...it darkens up a lot. The anime creator made a realistic ENB in my opinion. Cause a clear day would be rather bright (his doesn't look overbright to me) and an overcast day would be darker :P It is actually the best ENB as far as ENB goes...whether you like ENB or not I guess is up to the person, but this one is as good as it gets. I'll be taking more screenshots in a couple days or whenever, so you'll see what rain/night/cloudy looks like (if it happens).

Mod info
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There is a ton of stuff added on top of his anime mod. But I won't likely be adding anymore (said that last time and kept my promise...but my last overhaul was broken and I got rid of mods lol). Mostly because it is 100% stable thus far (from my 2 hour non-stop play through, which isn't really much and I have till end of december to keep testing)...and mod limit is already pretty much reached. I don't want to deal with merged mods, not experienced enough for that.

Btw, if too much conversation happens with the anime mod or whatever I end up calling it...I'll probably just end up making a new thread for it so people can still discuss skyrim stuff.

Anime Skyrim sounds fantastic.

Also, what kind of system are you running? I'm mostly concerned about my own FPS in this case.

Not the best, not the worst.

i5 3.3 Ghz CPU (its okay, a very low end brand though (it is intel, but made by a different company) and one of the oldest i5s. Most of my low FPS is probably from this. If you have a newer i5 or higher, you should be fine CPU wise. When it was released it was 50 dollars, it was one of the lowest priced ones)

Geforce 660 GTX 2gb (I wouldn't play the overhaul on anything less than 2 gb...I more recommend 4gb to be honest. I had a geforce 260 GTX 876 MB and the mod was...I got 15-20 FPS and had to turn everything off, lowest resolution, lowest graphics and it was still bad FPS)

Windows 7 64bit

8 gig DDR3 ram

1920x1080 monitor

So not the best system in the world, not the worst...I get 35 fps average, but goes to 40-45 in exteriors and always 60 interiors.
