Just wanted to let people know that I'm stuck in Wales for a few more days, but I'll make an update early next week.

Wales eh? that's only vaguely 150 miles / 240 km from where I live O.o I live in the South west of the UK. What brings you over there? Was it the sheep? (Culture joke :P)
I'm more curious how he got there.  Apparently he's a lot more talented with that bike than he lets on.

I don't believe that you can mod out farm plots, carpenters', kitchens, etc.
I know for a fact that there is a DFhack script for removing vanilla workshops. Don't know the details, but apparently this can be done.

Now you have peaked my interest...  I'm going to investigate this a little more...
I think it only removes them from the fort-mode menu.  It doesn't actually prevent worldgen sites from making them.

Those strings are actually encoded in the DF executable (list of all embedded strings here) rather than appearing in the raws, but all is not lost.  There is a tool designed for localization (translating DF into other languages) that can be used to alter any of the embedded strings, though unfortunately it can't add completely new ones.  This might be the tool, but I'm not sure.  Haven't been following that project to be honest.

Can anyone really tell me what this tyranid/zerg thing is suppose to be?  I've not seen anything called either in the raws.  As best I would guess were talking warhammer tyranids like this:http://warhammer40k.wikia.com/wiki/Tyranids or starcraft zergs.

such groups may be good for seige/raids/invaders.  I wonder if we can have invaders set up camps near edge of map, form camp buildings, the single female class character could produce new troops virtually instantaneous through "biomass?" which would include meat, bones, corpses, remains, wood?, plants?, fruit?, veggies?

A direct copy of the warhammer version  or starcraft version would be extremely difficult.  Caste system for X creature types. All new buildings for everything, all new armor for every caste (some castes would not be able to use gear from other castes, due to different body forms.

Maybe an insect swarm/species?  it just seems so non-DF.
Not knowing the source material at all, I assumed it was some kind of hive mind.  Basically no emotional problems (except for hating isolation) but a higher population and a much, much more labor-intensive economy.  The playstyle twist is that one needs to get the fort virtually self-running (like a late-game dwarf fort) very early just to survive.

Of course, Meph might have something entirely different in mind.

Is it possible to make a custom bp_appearance_modifier that pops up in the creature description?
Unfortunately, no.  There's a pretty good variety of descriptors to pick from anyway with the notable lack of a way to go from "small" to "large".  (My guess is that Toady foresaw people using that to mod in descriptions of naughty bits.)

There is a clunky work-around, though.  You can make custom colors and apply those to your bodypart to make them show up in descriptions.  One side effect is that you might get a dwarf with one of those as a favorite color.  A work-around for that is to make your custom descriptions into color patterns instead.

51
MEPH! Its not the Meth-Tileset. That one looks differently. :P
Well of course.  The Meth Tileset was cooked up in some cheap motel room, resulting in a dangerous product of questionable quality.  The Meph Tileset is an example of exceptional German engineering.

Hi PanDados, at first glance, check the filename and the first line inside the file.  For a creature, it needs to be something like creature_pandados.txt with creature_pandados on the first line, then [OBJECT:CREATURE] before the first [CREATURE:] tag.

Is there a plan to, eventually, allow players to create different types of adv-sites (Adventurer-created sites), aside from just Camps? Perhaps we could one day turn our own camps into a small Hamlet or  Hillock, or maybe even a   Lair, Labyrinth, Shrine, or Tomb?
is there a plan to allow fort mode sites to become a Hamlet or  Hillock, or aLair, Labyrinth, Shrine, or Tomb?
Is there a plan to be able to play Legends mode to create a Hamlet or  Hillock, or a Lair, Labyrinth, Shrine, or Tomb?  Okay, that's just being silly :D

Utilities and 3rd Party Applications / Re: [SUGGESTIONS] for DFhack plugins
« on: November 03, 2016, 02:01:24 pm »
We don't have to change DFHack's names at all. We just have to figure out how DF's and DFHack's names correspond.

Not necessary to change names, but switching to the DF names might also make it more intuitive. Depending on what Toady has named things.
Well, anon fields really ought to be renamed.  Other than that, Toady's names can be under a separate pointer to the DF structure (such as DF_official).

Hopefully the attributes aren't all .scamps1, .scamps2, .scamps3, etc.

It looks like it would be a major improvement, both in the long run and in the short one with the additional stuff that would be revealed. Conversion would be a mess (but probably a lot less so than the compiler switch), but for compiled code the compiler would flag all the things that have incorrectly guessed names (with the very unfortunate case of a guessed name accidentally matching an actual name of something else). For scripts, however, it might be worth the effort to create a tool that looked at everything that seemed to refer to DF data and flag those that didn't match anything in the correct structure.
There's no need to rename them all in DFHack. I meant that it would be necessary to figure out how Toady's names correspond to DFHack's, e.g. DF's "plot_info" is DFHack's "ui".
:
:
Not changing over to the official names means trading short term convenience for longer term maintenance hassles. Sure, it's possible to produce Toady's future output for every release and perform a comparison to the DFHack XML structures or Toady's previous version to catch changes and update the DFHack XML to reflect the latest exported data, but it would make more long term sense to switch from using the current XML files to using Toady's output. You'd still need to run a comparison to catch what's changed, in particular if things scripts use are removed, and you still need a brain (or many) in the loop to assess which plugins and scripts ought to be updated as things change to account for new things, of course.
There is nothing to prevent two different names from pointing at the same address.  Could keep the old names under DF.global and the correct ones under DF_official.global (or something more compact).

Now that Toady seems willing to provide a dump of global variables (if not the entire memory structure), a DFHack plugin to convert guessed-to-actual names would be very helpful.  Ideally something that could wrap around an old script like an emulator.  Statically analyzing code seems like it would be hardest path (having to parse local variables pointing to global ones).

I would recommend the [code][/code] block because it will suppress any BBcode meaning that sneaks into your raws ([LEFT] and [RIGHT] are particularly bothersome), and it puts the code in a fake window with a scrollbar so it won't take up a huge amount of vertical space.

Here's an example from The Earth Strikes Back!, not because the creature is awesome or anything, but because it shows how to put five hundred lines of code in a message without breaking the forum.
