DF General Discussion / Re: Quick question about DF releases
« on: August 19, 2014, 10:05:06 pm »
Until quite recently, it wasn't unusual for the game to go months, and in some cases years, between releases; much of the intervening time the code was "up on blocks" and not compilable due to major rewrites of underlying structure.  The build process took about a full day, during which coding, bugfixing, etc. wasn't happening.  Our understanding is that recent improvements have gotten the build process down to "a few hours", but that's still time not spent fixing bugs or writing new features.  With the exception of rare "hotfix" releases like 0.40.08 to 0.40.09, weekly seems to be a reasonable tempo; much more often, and he's wasting more time building than makes sense.

Sorry I wasn't aware that there was significant time required for compiling.. This thread has all the wrong energy I'm genuinely sorry I was just trying to understand but this explains it.. Thank you

Its true that they say the game should be played vanilla because that's the most authentic gameplay experience you can get. That said, my understanding is that ease of development was the reason that no time has been put into advanced graphics, which I think has helped the game be that much more detailed otherwise and I'm very thankful for that. I think however that if someone in the community wanted to put in the time to add to the game, I really appreciate that too... It is hard to find a good addition that also comes with that authentic feel but I can choose between several graphics packs : )

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Gives Water...no wounds?
« on: August 19, 2014, 09:14:32 pm »
I could be completely wrong but I got the impression that one of my dwarves was bringing water to another dwarf that was doing a long task and was thirsty for a while...

Is that possible?

Ah sorry : (

I was just responding to the other guy's suggestion of why it might not be possible by suggesting that if the nightly build was presented as a test release and not an official release that game breaking things could be forgiven because we accepted that risk when trying out the nightly build...

I'm just trying to understand that's all : \

ToadyOne to my knowledge hasn't commented on why he doesn't do Nightly builds.

Probably because they don't want to, or feel that its not woth the time to do it.

Probably he only wants to show the version editions and the bugfixes when he feels they are ready, since the game would have bugs that wouldn't the the fun kind, but the fun-killing kind.

So not an official release but a nightly public beta? :3

EDIT: Ok not beta but you know what I mean, like nightly public development/test release

DF General Discussion / Re: Playing DF with a low end computer
« on: August 19, 2014, 08:46:24 pm »
Yea these days processors seem to show off with their core count instead of clock speed, so even a 5 year old pc can have solid clock speeds these days... This is because DF doesnt utilize multiple CPU cores

So really, you're in good shape - don't worry - just enjoy the game : ) choose a 2x2 embark and youre solid

(My preferred set is to set a very low population limit, low child limit, turn off sound, turn on water depth, and switch graphics to Phoebus...SP makes it very easy, including copying saves to the latest DF version)

Ya dude! Phoebus all the way!

DF General Discussion / Quick question about DF releases
« on: August 19, 2014, 08:41:32 pm »
Hi guys,

So I assume because its not happening that there's a valid reason but I was wondering whats holding back the latest builds of DF from being released daily via torrent?

I mean, I don't want to suggest any dissatisfaction with the massive number of bugfixes that cool awesome people have been working daily to fix... but those devblogs are really a tease early in the week. Am I right?... All the worst bugs seem to be squished on Monday and Tuesday lately lol

Serious question...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How do I tell an area is more FUN?
« on: August 19, 2014, 04:58:33 pm »
For added fun look for places with TOWER listed as a nearby 'civ' and for even more fun, try a haunted, sinister or terrifying biome : )

You can also consider challening yourself to embarking at a less-than-ideal location with ice/no ores/no trees/aquifer

To the folks that are removing the [FLIER] tags, I understand that flying creatuers get frozen sometimes pathing through the air and that the original bug report says that this stops sieges from happening... Is that true? Just wanted to confirm thats what you folks are adjusting raws for; so sieges keep happening

as of this post, 2 people report that they are 101+

I should put a poll up on my fortress drawbridge to identify the vampires, since it appears to be easy to identify them this way lol

Hello!

This may be the wrong venue to ask and I appologize for muddying up your deliciously info-rich thread with my yammering but has there been any investigation into the combat mechanics of other types of weapons and armor? Serrated discs vs various, ballista/catapult rounds vs various etc etc...

I've noticed A-LOT more bruising, as opposed to 'the severed piece flies off in an arc' lol

but only qualitatively and certainly not in a controlled investigative manner - could someone say some words about whether we should be experiencing any differences in the way these other combaty things would feel post 34.11 ?
